Building True Blue --- A Buffalo Bulls NCAA 14 Dynasty

ONE OF THE NFL'S GREATEST PLAYERS COMES FROM A COLLEGE YOU'VE NEVER HEARD OF...

Welcome to BUILDING TRUE BLUE, a Buffalo Bulls NCAA 14 Dynasty by smellbig

In the 2014 NFL Draft, Khalil Mack was drafted by the Oakland Raiders 5th overall out of the University of Buffalo. Through his four years at UB, his accolades include the NCAA record for forced fumbles in a career, tying the NCAA record in career tackles for loss, 327 total tackles, 75 tackles for loss, 28.5 sacks, 4 interceptions, 16 forced fumbles, 4 fumbles recovered, and 2 blocked kicks. If you knew any name out of Buffalo before this year, you knew this one.

You might remember the story of Shaquill and Shaquem Griffin, twin brothers from Florida. Shaquill was recruited by his dream team in the Miami Hurricanes, but turned down their offer, choosing instead to play at UCF with his brother Shaquem, an amputee. Both are now members of the Seattle Seahawks. Enter Jaret and James Patterson, 2 star recruits out of Laurel, MD. James received offers while Jaret didn't, but the two made it clear they were a package deal. Buffalo was the only FBS school to offer Jaret a scholarship, and it seems to have turned out pretty good for both parties...

You read that right, 8 touchdowns and 400+ yards in one game! Patterson racked up 19 touchdowns and over 1000 yards in just 6 games in the 2020-21 season, leaving scouts everywhere wondering just what exactly he might be able to do if given a full slate of games. The Bulls were ranked #23 in the nation at one point this season, their first and highest ranking ever in program history.

However, this is dynasty we're talking about, and things are quite a bit different. It's 2020, the rosters are completely random, and the NCAA conferences have been turned upside down. This team has no Jaret Patterson or his great offensive line, no Khalil Mack, and a clear lack of nationally recognized talent in a new-look MAC conference with a lot of work to do.

Re: Building True Blue --- A Buffalo Bulls NCAA 14 Dynasty

For immediate release: The University of Buffalo Bulls football team issued a press release last week indicating that they were moving on from HC Lance Leipold. His replacement was announced today, relative unknown Jennifer Welter. Welter, 43, made history in 2014 when she signed with the Texas Revolution of the Champions Indoor Football League as a runningback, making her the first woman to play a contact position in a male-dominated football league. She briefly held positions on the coaching staff of the Arizona Cardinals and Alliance of American Football's Atlanta Legends, but Welter looks to make history once again in 2020 as the first female head coach of an NCAA FBS team.

Coach Welter, a Boston College grad and psychology PhD recipient from Capella University, brings with her a diverse and experienced crew of assistant coaches. Buffalo's offensive coordinator will be fellow Boston College graduate Damien Woody, who played along the O-Line for the Patriots, Lions, and Jets, winning two Super Bowl rings, making the Pro Bowl once with over 160 starts in his career. Welter and Woody told media Friday that they were planning on instituting an Option Run offense in Buffalo. The new defensive coordinator will be former Seattle Seahawk and LA Charger defensive tackle Brandon Mebane. Mebane recently retired from the NFL after a 13-year career in which he won a Super Bowl with Seattle and made the 2007 PFWA All-Rookie Team. His technique is the 3-3-5 defense, something fans of UB football will be quite familiar with.

Welter, Woody, and Mebane are taking control of a team ranked 124th out of 126 teams in the country, with no Jaret Patterson, no Khalil Mack, and a clear lack of nationally recognized talent. The only player getting any buzz is MLB Will Greene, a preseason All-American at his position. The junior will do his best this year to keep the defense afloat against the schedule below, featuring Wyoming, Hawai'i, #22 Florida Atlantic, and Coastal Carolina as out of conference opponents.

      Buffalo Bulls 2020 Schedule
      DATEOPPONENT
      Sep 5vs Wyoming
      Sep 12at Hawaii
      Sep 19at #22 Florida Atlantic
      Oct 3at Boston College
      Oct 10vs Coastal Carolina
      Oct 17at Toledo
      Oct 24vs Ohio
      Oct 31vs Temple
      Nov 7vs Syracuse
      Nov 14vs Akron
      Nov 21at Bowling Green
      Nov 26at Miami (OH)

Players to keep an eye on: Year 1
Welter's Bulls have many holes on their roster to watch for, but there are some strong spots no scout can miss. Let's take a closer look.

QB Dan Murphy: 6'3, 209 lbs, SR (RS), from Marion, NC
Murphy played alright last year as a junior, putting up 15 TDs and 2235 yards with 7 INTs and completing 197 out of 428 passes. While Murphy is indisputably better than the backups on the roster, it's clear from preseason practice that Woody and Welter are frustrated with his lack of development. Welter commented at her most recent press conference that she's looking to push Murphy more this year in her new scheme, saying a 46% completion percentage is "never going to be good enough."

FB Willie Gardner: 6'0, 232, JR, from Gadsden, AL
We get it - he's a fullback, right? How much does he really contribute? But Gardner is no joke: with the highest overall of any player on the offense in a scheme that depends on the fullback, Welter promises his skill won't go to waste. "I love a fullback run," she told media. "I'm not afraid to put him as a running back or receiver, either. The kid's got skill, we're going to use it."

WR Andy Dawson: 6'3, 201, JR, from Landen, OH
This three-star recruit is looking to break out in his first year as the #1 wide receiver on the team. Last year he averaged 11.2 yards per reception, gaining nearly 40% of his yards after the catch. "We've got something special here," Woody told the Buffalo Bulls Beat Report. "When the ball is in his hands, watch out." Dawson has had injury issues in the past, but as long as he can stay healthy, he'll be seeing the field far more this year.

MLB Will Greene: 5'10, 230, JR (RS), from Tonawanda, NY
"He might be short, but he doesn't play like it. He doesn't mess around out there, he runs like the wind, we love it." newly instated defensive coordinator Brandon Mebane told media last week. He's not the only one around the NCAA who likes what they see from Greene, as he was named to the preseason All-American team this morning. With 6.5 sacks and 6 pass deflections in his first year with the team last year as a JUCO transfer to his hometown team, Greene will be captaining the defense out on the field for Mebane this year.

CB Joel Cary: 6'0, 191, SR (RS), from Waukesha, WI
Greene won't be alone out there, however, as redshirt senior Joel Cary will be alongside him. Cary's development has been slow, with him only having 11 tackles to his name so far in his collegiate career. However, Welter couldn't say enough good words about him in her most recent press conference, saying his work ethic and drive to be good are unmatched. "He's going to play. I've seen his tape from last year and there's something there for sure. We're going to help him realize it."

                  2020 Week 1 - BYE

News from 'Round the Nation: Nebraska is Back on Top
You read that right, folks - it's 2020, not the mid 90s, and the Nebraska Cornhuskers are the #1 team in the nation. Led by senior running back John Guerrero and arguably the best offensive line in the country, the Huskers start their year easy this week with a matchup against FCS MW. "We're not underestimating them," HC Scott Frost said Tuesday, but everyone knows what the expectation is.

                  Recruiting Spotlight: Cedrick Williams
                  C, 6'2, 286, from Whitehall, PA, ★★, #49 C
2★ center Cedrick Williams from Whitehall, PA was offered a scholarship today by Buffalo, with new OC Damien Woody not taking any chances about protecting his QB in the future. Woody, who played guard in the NFL, stressed in his first interview with the media the importance of getting and growing talent on the offensive line and this offer today is proof that he and his scouts were serious. We reached out to Williams for comment, but he has yet to make any statements about where he intends to play next year, although reports state Temple, Kent State, Penn State, Cincinnatti, and Buffalo are in his top five.

                  Game Notes
Coach Welter's first test comes against the dead-last, 126th ranked team in the nation, the Wyoming Cowboys. With the Cowboys traveling cross-country for the matchup, Buffalo looks to make a statement knowing all eyes are on them as their coach makes history this Saturday.

Well, Buffalo fans, if you wanted something special out of this season opener you certainly got it. The Bulls scored in all three phases today coming up big in their opener against Wyoming. The final score of 34-28 makes it seem like the game was close, but it was clear from the jump that these Bulls came to play. WR Paul Brown returned the opening kickoff 92 yards for a score and less than three minutes later FS Brandon Johnson picked off Wyoming QB Junior Wheatley and brought that to the house. After a 1 yard touchdown run by Wheatley and a field goal from Buffalo kicker Jamil Carr, the first quarter ended with a score of 17-7.

One of two Dan Murphy touchdown runs on the day came in the 2nd quarter, a 5 yard run. Another field goal by Carr wrapped up the first half at a score of 27-7. Buffalo's Robert Doucette picked off Wheatley near the end of the quarter to stop a promising Wyoming drive. However Wyoming's turnover woes did not end there, as sophomore running back Jay Carter fumbled early in the 3rd quarter, forced by Buffalo's Demetrius Burley and recovered by Donte Lloyd. The blunder led to Murphy's second touchdown run of the day from 1 yard out. The touchdown briefly injured Murphy's collarbone, and he came out of the game through the rest of the 3rd quarter and half of the 4th. Backup QB Justin Brown filled in. The Bulls defense slowed down from there, allowing up two scores from Wyoming SR Will Tatum in the 3rd quarter and another in the 4th with less than 2 minutes to go in the ball game.

There were clear offensive woes from Buffalo in this game, as Murphy completed only 47% of his passes and backup Brown only 37% for a total of only 128 passing yards and no touchdowns. But there was much to get excited about as well, as the offensive line held up well in protection against an underrated Wyoming D line. There were no sacks given up and the line blocked the way for both of Dan Murphy's touchdowns. Welter, however, was not satisfied.

"We played well offensively, yes, but we have so much more potential," she said to the media in the post-game press conference. "When the ball is in the air near the receivers, they make the plays. We just got to get the ball there." Welter's right; the passing problems came from the quarterbacks this afternoon, as the receiver room had a collective zero drops on the day. Noting the "tale of two halves" on offense as only 7 points were scored in the 3rd and 4th quarters, Welter shifted her discussion. The defense started strong but as the Cowboys adjusted to the looks being given, their offense soared. "Only 60-something yards in the first half, it was excellent. We need to get back to that. When you win the turnover battle, you expect to win the game. But we can't allow 300-something yards on offense in one half and expect to win each week."

The Bulls will certainly have to get their second-half adjustments in order as they travel to Honolulu next week to face the Rainbow Warriors. Hawai'i is 1-1 after a big win over FCS East and a crushing loss to Arizona.

                      Injury Report:
Although starting QB Dan Murphy exited the game briefly in the 3rd quarter with a bruised collarbone, he was back in by the end of the game. Welter said she is confident he will play next week, citing a quick recovery and "lots of pain meds."

News from 'Round the Nation: Problems in Athens?
The #2 Georgia Bulldogs lost their season opener last week to the unranked Arkansas Razorbacks 31-28. The Razorbacks' victory came off a dominant day by the defense, including three interceptions of Georgia QB Demetrius Brown - one by JR CB Adam Dawson returned for a TD and two by SR CB Brian Terry, one of which he also ran to the endzone. The Arkansas offense didn't need to do much to secure the victory with that kind of defensive performance, and the team is earning some buzz because of it.

                      Recruiting Spotlight: Brett Smith
                      ATH, 6'1, 312, from Ocoee, FL, ★★★, #45 ATH
Florida churns out prospect after prospect year after year and Buffalo hopes to get a taste in their 2020 recruiting class. An athlete out of Ocoee, Brett Smith played along on the offensive line and as a linebacker in high school. Smith spoke with media on Thursday, saying he had narrowed his choice to Buffalo, Central Michigan, Memphis, and Syracuse. "I'm so thankful for all of the coaches who spoke with me and spent time recruiting me. I haven't made my decision yet and I'm eager to keep up the conversation with the coaches of the Bulls, Orange, Chippewas, and Tigers."

This Hawai'i team has a lot to prove this year as they spend their first year in the new PAC 12. Led by junior QB Matt Culp the team is 1-1, bouncing back last week after their loss to Arizona with a big win over FCS East. The Rainbow Warriors hope to keep the good times rolling as the Bulls take the show on the road. Senior RB Justin Jackson from Hawai'i seems posied to take over a game any day now as he currently averages 8.2 yards per carry and 4 broken tackles a game.

Matt Culp had a field day with the Bulls defense today, throwing 5 touchdowns on only 20 attempts. Marcus Moss caught 3 of them, averaging 21.4 yards per reception in a 59-31 shellacking of Buffalo in Honolulu. HB Justin Jackson had 18 rushes for 133 yards with Joel Monroe rushing for another 101 yards and a score. Two interceptions of Buffalo QB Dan Murphy, one of which Matt Mills ran 61 yards to the house gave the Rainbow Warriors a huge victory over the Bulls.

Murphy completed 12 of 24 passes for 166 yards, 2 TDs, and 2 interceptions on the day. 11 of the 12 passes were caught by WR Maurice Jolly who had 155 yards and 2 scores on the day. Joe Concepcion and John Douglas both ran for a touchdown, with Douglas' coming off an 80-yard sprint in which he broke a tackle from Cortez Foster at the line of scrimmage and wasn't touched again. Foster was filling in at LE for the injured Jason Williams, who was out this week with a broken tailbone and will miss three more weeks.

However, Murphy and company weren't able to match the high-flying Hawai'i offense. Interceptions by Buffalo's Daron Gray and Thomas Everett stopped two promising Hawai'i drives but poor play by the defensive line gave Culp all day to throw and the Jackson-Monroe running back tandem plenty of lanes to run. A 28 point third quarter was likely the nail in Buffalo's coffin, and despite his optimistic talk in post-game press conferences, DC Brandon Mebane seemed frustrated on the sideline throughout the second half.

"It's upsetting to play like that when I see such promise. We've got so much potential," Mebane told reporters. "These guys are tough. We'll bounce back big. The more the guys play together the more cohesive we are and we will become. We are building something special, it's just going to take time." Unfortunately for Mebane, the Bulls don't have near all the time in the world to figure out their issues. They travel cross country from Hawai'i to Boca Raton, FL to face the Florida Atlantic University Owls, an 11-hour flight and nearly 5,000-mile journey.

                        Injury Report:
Starting cornerback Brain George was ruled out today during the 2nd quarter with a knee injury, and we learned later that the injury is a PCL sprain that will keep the junior out for three weeks. If recovery goes according to plan we should see George back on the field for the week 5 game against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.

News from 'Round the Nation: Cougs burn #7 Golden Bears
Two old PAC 12 rivals faced off this weekend in a surprise upset by Washington State over the #7 Cal Golden Bears. Wazzu's win came off a solid day by the defense over an undoubtedly better Cal team. Intercepting redshirt junior QB Chris Wesley twice and a kick return touchdown from the Cougars along with QB Cory Walker's 250 yard, 2 touchdown day was enough to top Cal 42-31. They fell to #24 in the nation, a striking blow to the playoff hopefuls.

                        Recruiting Spotlight: Jazz Kindred
                        QB, 6'4, 218, from Swissvale, PA, ★★★, #79 QB
While no formal commitment has yet to be made, it appears the #7 quarterback from Pennsylvania, Jazz Kindred has narrowed down his decision to Buffalo and Akron. The 3 star pocket passer has cited proximity to home as one of his greatest factors influencing his decision. The Bulls have a visit scheduled with Kindred for week 5.

                        Game Notes
Starting the season ranked #22, the Owls have fallen off a bit after a 1-1 start. They played the #13 Florida Gators in week one, as difficult a matchup as they come in the Floridian Division of the ACC. With a win over FCS MW two weeks ago and a bye under their belt, the Owls look to get quarterback Maurice Garrison back on track. The redshirt sophomore from Gainseville, FL has 0 passing touchdowns to 2 interceptions this season, with 273 yards passing and 2 rushing touchdowns. The Bulls offense will need to keep an eye on CB John Berry who has 3 interceptions thus far this season, including a 68 yard pick six.

It wasn't pretty by any means but the Bulls pulled off another big win this week, a close 28-23 victory over the Florida Atlantic Owls. This came off the back of a huge day by WR Maurice Jolly who was named MAC Offensive Player of the Week for his 21 reception, 163 yard, 2 touchdown game. "Maurice came through big. He's always making plays with the ball in his hands, and that speed is just unmatched," HC Jen Welker said of his performance. Joe Concepcion ran for 114 yards and John Douglas punched another two touchdowns for the Bulls in a victory soured by turnovers.

While Murphy through a year-high 40 attempts, he completed just 57% for 170 yards and 2 TDs and a frustrating four interceptions. "We asked Dan to do a lot more this week, changing up the offense a little to fit the opponent. We won, sure, but it pains me to see it come off the back of so many interceptions," said OC Damien Woody.

"I've gotta clean up the turnovers," Dan Murphy told reporters. "The team is counting on me and the guys out there are making the plays. I've got to do my part. That's my plan for this week, ball security." Three of the four interceptions were caught by FAU's star cornerback John Berry and all came while Murphy was targeting WR Andy Dawson. Dawson ended the day with only 1 reception for 3 yards, and it's become apparent that Maurice Jolly has taken over as the #1 receiver on the depth chart.

At one point we noticed Murphy's backup Justin Brown warming up on the sidelines early in the 4th, but Murphy was able to march the Bulls down the field for Douglas' second score of the day, keeping himself off the bench. Buffalo's secondary continues to come up big as star middle linebacker Will Greene intercepted Owl QB Maurice Garrison to seal the victory late in the 4th quarter. The defensive line was once again quiet as the team had only four tackles for loss and one sack. However, the defense was able to keep preseason Heisman hopeful Trey Davis to only 62 yards albeit with two short rushing touchdowns.

Coach Welter had high praise for one other player in her post-game presser earlier. "Let's not forget Lamar's performance today. Three amazing punts, one after another." Punter Lamar Mobley's three punts on the day were all downed inside the 20-yard line for an average per punt of 43.3 yards. For all the offensive and defensive woes these first few weeks, the special teams unit has been one cohesive group all year long.

                          Injury Report:
Head Coach Jennifer Welter updated media after the game on what appeared to be a serious injury to redshirt senior Ken Howard, backup tackle. Howard did indeed break his left fibula as was feared during his limited action against the Owls. Howard entered the game in the second quarter for Darius Reed who was dealing with shin splints. Reed returned to action after the half and is "feeling great," but Howard is projected to be out for 6-8 weeks. Welter also gave an update on CB Brian George, saying he's progressing well and is on track to be back for the game against Coastal Carolina.

News from 'Round the Nation: Fighting Irish shuck #1 Nebraska
Notre Dame took down the #1 team in the country this weekend in a 47-21 rout. The Irish's win came off a big day by RB Kevin Clarke in which he racked up 149 yards and 3 TDs on 20 rushing attempts. A 4th rushing touchdown came from backup QB Jorge Howard in the 4th, following one of two interceptions thrown by Nebraska quarterback Terry Thompson. The Huskers fall to #7 as the Texas Longhorns take the #1 overall spot in the AP Poll. They look to bounce back next week as they head to East Lansing, MI to take on the 2-1 Michigan State Spartans.

                          Recruiting Spotlight: Dan Corbett
                          WR, 5'11, 189, from London, CN, ★★★, #113 WR
Canada's #3 overall prospect has taken an apparent interest in the Buffalo Bulls. The JUCO sophomore transfer ran a 4.36 40 yard dash in high school and looks to have become even faster over his time in junior college. Corbett attended Erie Community College in Williamsville, NY, just a ten-minute drive south on Interstate 290 from UB, and put up a 2,000-yard season with the Kats before deciding to move on. His home town of London, CN is only a two-hour drive from Buffalo and his familiarity with the town and Niagara Falls area seems to be doing the Bulls lots of favors. ECC is more well known for its baseball products, not football players, but the Bulls might have struck gold with this one should he commit.

                          Week 5 Preview - BYE
The Bulls' big game against the FAU Owls came at the perfect time, as Buffalo is on bye this week. There's much work to be done around the team as OC Damien Woody was clearly upset with the offense's 4 interception, 4 sack performance Saturday. The now-injured Ken Howard who took over briefly for starting left tackle Darius Reed surrendered two of the sacks with center Jamal Allen giving up the other two. Woody plans to spend "a long time with the guys" on becoming better at pulling their blocks and running with Murphy on some of the longer-developing option plays the team has begun to run.

Welter said her big focus this week is going to be spreading the ball around more, as for the second week in a row the vast majority of the receptions have gone to Maurice Jolly. "Maurice is great and we know he can handle it. But he shouldn't have to shoulder it all alone. We've got Brown and Moss and Dawson out there, working on getting open. Let's give them chances, too." Jolly is currently fifth in the nation in receiving yards, and might be a sleeper candidate for the 2020 Biletnikoff Award.

News from 'Round the Nation: Rivalry Woes for Mountaineers
In a 34-13 stunner, #8 West Virginia falls to an unranked Maryland squad thanks to a great game from QB S. Mitchell. Mitchell was 17 for 31 for 256 yards and 2 scores. Another two touchdowns on the ground from L. Evans along with 239 total yards rushing and a slow day for the West Virginia offense gave the Terps the edge. Additionally, Maryland was perfect in the red zone, getting four touchdowns off of four trips within the 20-yard line. "Good, disciplined football," HC Mike Locksley said during media interviews, "It will win you games, every time."

                            Recruiting Spotlight: Oliver Richardson
                            DE, 6'4, 237, from Dormont, PA, ★★★, #36 DE
Temple, Toledo, and Buffalo are battling it out for pass-rushing DE Oliver Richardson. Oliver, a cheerful kid from outside of Pittsburgh, was happy to talk with Buffalo media this past week. "I love it in Buffalo. Coach W and her staff have something awesome cooking up there. I haven't made my decision yet but if I do end up committing there I know I'm in good hands. Plus," he said smiling, "I love chicken wings."

Additionally, Buffalo has six recruits visiting during the bye this week: 3★ athlete Brett Smith, 3★ quarterback Jazz Kindred, 3★ tackle Brandon Darby, 3★ center T.J. Davis, 2★ tackle Travis Payne, and 1★ center Wes Walker.

                            Game Notes
Buffalo opens its conference play this week against the 1-2 Boston College Eagles. This is back-up cornerback Robert Doucette's former team, having transferred from BC over a year ago. The Eagles have struggled on defense so far this year, allowing an average of nearly 425 yards a game through five weeks. The pass defense particularly has been an issue, which will be an interesting matchup for the Bulls this week as in their last game against the FAU Owls Buffalo QB Dan Murphy threw four interceptions on one hand and WR Maurice Jolly earned MAC Player of the Week honors for his 163 yard receiving performance on the other.

Solid start to the season at 2-1 for the young Bulls! Defense really stepped up in that last game to keep FAU from cashing in on the five turnovers, which was a nice bounceback for that unit following its performance against Hawaii. Should be another good game coming up here against Boston College.
