TBTTF Part 2: A New Era In Oklahoma

.

Lancers Make Move At The Top
2002

Oklahoma City, OK - Jeff Fisher is out after three years coaching with the Oklahoma City Lancers. Fisher, the team's first head coach, compiled a 19-26 record in three seasons with the team. After a 5-win inaugural season, Fisher went 7-9 over the next two years with Kurt Warner installed as the team's starting quarterback. Warner had beaten out rookie Tim Couch for the starting job in 1999 but the two split work during the season. Warner accounted for 4 of the team's 5 wins during that year and since 2000 has started 30 of 32 games. Under Fisher, the team was competent at best.

In steps Mike Martz, the flashy offensive coordinator from Baltimore that helped put together one of the most potent offenses in the league over the last two years. Martz reunites in a way with Warner, who was on the Rams squad in 1998, four years after the Arena legend was drafted to OKC in the expansion draft. Warner has proven he has the arm to succeed in the NFL. Now, with an experienced offensive coach, Lancers fans are hoping to see Warner and the team take the next step and post its first plus .500 season in franchise history.

Reunited And It Feels So Good
2002

Dallas, TX - The Patriots have solved the Bledsoe/Brady dilemma by trading away its longtime quarterback to the Cowboys. Dallas, which hired Bill Parcells earlier this offseason, reunites its new coach with his former quarterback. Bledsoe stared under Parcells and the duo made a Super Bowl appearance together near the end of Parcells run in New England. The Cowboys front office is hoping a return to form is in order following several down years in the wake of a declining team under first Coach Penn, and then a short uninspired run by Dave Campo.

NFC Central Gets QB Boost
April 20, 2002

New York, NY - These two might not be as talented as Mike Vick, who went #1 overall last year to the Colts, but Carr and Harrington add a big boost to the passing games of the Lions and Vikings after going 1st and 2nd overall. Carolina, which had the original #1 pick, surprised many draft experts when the team opted to trade down with the Lions and settle with instate edge rusher Julius Peppers out of North Carolina. Detroit paid a hefty fee for the chance to choose which QB it wanted over its divisional rival, and going with Carr looks like the correct choice.

Lancers First-Round History
2002

Oklahoma City, OK - A quick look at the first-round selections by the newest team in the NFL. Things kicked off in 1999 when the Lancers joined the league and was awarded the top pick in the upcoming draft. From there, sub .500 seasons gave Oklahoma City the chances to add quality pieces to a young franchise. Couch may not have seen much on the field action, thanks to the play of Kurt Warner, but it's may be a touch too early to call him a total bust. However, seeing the talent that went after him, and the emergence of Warner, easily makes him the biggest "What if...?" pick early on in the history of the Lancers.

1999 1.01 - QB Tim Couch, Kentucky
2000 1.08 - RB Ron Dayne, Wisconsin
2001 1.12 - WR Rod Gardner, Clemson
2002 1.10 - OT Levi Jones, Arizona State
