Play As You Download

I could use more insight on this, because if we can play around midnight without having to wait for the game to fully download everything and install, I will be quite satisfied

The digital store shows a logo on MLB 14 saying Play As You Download, has anyone ever had experience with this and how will I be able to start game, just the step by step process?

I was under the impression that you would be able to download the game a couple days in advance so it would already be fully downloaded by midnight, but I could be wrong.

That is the impression held about the Preload feature that was just introduced to the PS4 universally April 30th. It's not clear whether that feature will or will not apply to MLB 14 and games already ready to preorder.

This Play As You Download feature is something totally different.

Play as you download has been in almost every AAA game so far.

2k14 lets you play exhibition between Miami and OKC, Battlefield lets you play the Campaign, FIFA does an exhibition as well i believe.

I think the odds on it been an Exhibition between the 2 World Series teams from last year are high.

not download INSTALL. while you wait 8 to 10 hours for it to download you can't do anything.. it actually has to download data that you use to actually play the game.. install YES data is downloaded therefore you can play is it installs.


so yes after that 10 hours of waiting the next 1 hour of it installing you can then play as it installs

You are wrong. 2k downloads the files necessary to play a game between Heat and Spurs. Those files are 2.5GB. So it wont be 10 hours unless you have dial up.

Where do you get that idea from? I was playing NBA 2k14 within 10 minutes and I downloaded all 46gb from the store. It has to download and install the files required for the Exhibition game (so 2 teams, stadium and basic menu). It then downloads the rest for however long it takes, but you can keep playing the Exhibition game over and over. That's the whole point in the feature.

Not that it matters to me anyways. I've pre-ordered off the US store so I'll activate at 5am... Gonna set the alarm to just check it's started downloading, then back to bed as I've booked the day off work and hopefully by 9/10am it'll have downloaded!

Nice to have the day off. I had it plan like that myself but now I have a stupid "mandatory meeting". It's like a 4 hour snoozefest.

I am actually doing the NBA2K14 "Play as you download" right now. The other day I picked up a new PS4 console in anticipation of Tuesday's MLB 14 The Show release. But I thought 'I need a PS4 game other than just The Show". Even though I am not a huge Basketball person (I respect the sport for it's athleticism, I just find it rather repetitive), word on the street is that NBA2K14 is the best sports game (until of course MLB 14) to show case the power of the PS4. Anyway I initiated the download purchase last night and it did not take long to download the basics to get to play an exhibition game between Miami and San Antonio (and yes the graphics in the game looks fantastic, much better than the NBA 14 Live and FIFA 14 demos I downloaded). But it is still taking a long time for the rest of the game to finish downloading.

So assuming MLB 14 The Show's "play as you download" is similar. People will be able to play exhibition games in the middle of the night on May 6th. But it will likely be morning or later before they can actually use all the features of the game.

People are exaggerating the download times. When I bought NBA 2k14 digitally it took me 1.5 hours to have it fully installed and ready to play. I remember thinking "wow this was extremely quick" when it finished.

Also, the play as you download is essentially a demo. It's great and I really like how they manage this on PS4. I love the console very much.

Side note: NBA 2k14 does look fantastic. I only wish it had all the bells and whistles of last gen. Excited for MLB The Show tomorrow night!

You must have had some sort of pre-loading going on. I have a good internet connection and my NBA2k14 download has been going on since last night and it will likely be several more hours before it's finished. Of course I don't know what's going on on the other end. While my internet connection may be pretty good, perhaps I am talking to a dog with fleas on the other end feeding me the game data.
