The Game Log Pitch Count is a Lie

I've been keeping track of my pitches in an attempt to say something worth saying about Quick Counts, and have been relying somewhat on the Game Log for an accurate pitch count.

Now I'm not so sure that's a safe assumption.

Top of the 6th inning, playing with the Mariners vs Athletics. Roenis Elias pitching, been wild all day. Walks the first batter he sees in Jed Lowrie. I noted his pitch count –*88 – and pulled him for a reliever.

I wanted to be sure I got the count right, so I went back into the Game Log with the intent of counting up to see if I got it right. First thing I noticed was some strangeness with the current inning. Said I'd pitched 15 pitches that inning. Whatever, though – no big deal, I figured there was some temporary glitch from putting in a reliever. I know from the replay that I walked Lowrie on a 3-1 count.

So I add up the previous innings, and I get a different number than the number I'd written down at the time I subbed out Elias: 96. Double-check my math:

    1st inning: 28 pitches
    2nd inning: 13 pitches
    3rd inning: 18 pitches
    4th inning: 19 pitchs
    5th inning: 13 pitches

That makes 91 pitches, plus 5 pitches for the first batter in the 6th. 96.

I go back to the replay to double-check the pitch count there (you can see the pitch count in the replay screenshot below).

Now I go back to the game log, and those 15 pitches in the 6th inning look weirder and weirder. How can I have 15 pitches? Even if you take in account the current reliever/batter count (2-1), the most that could be is 8 pitches. There's no way they fouled off 7 pitches in the Quick Count imaginary land – the count would have to be two strikes for there to have been some sort of off-screen foul ball battle.

This isn't a big deal in the grand scheme of things, as the game still runs pretty great. But I was having some frustrations with Quick Counts, and wanted to suggest that Quick Counts would benefit from having the occasional 0-1, 1-0, and even 0-0 counts thrown in (especially against low Discipline players).

Now my stupid waste of time "research" into Quick Counts is even more of an obvious waste of time. So... I guess if you care about these types of things, don't put any weight into the Game Log's pitch count.

I play with Quick Counts (which I must say is AMAZING)

I myself have noticed that I'll pull my starter in the 7th, he'll walk way with, say, 94 pitches.

When the game is over, however, and I exit the game and it shows the player of the game was my starting pitcher, it shows that the NP (number of pitches) is WAAAYY high at like 127 or 130.

Definitely has to be a bug or something. Because I know for a fact that my pitcher exits the game with a certain amount of pitches.

I'm loving Quick Counts but think that precluding the chance of EVER getting a one- or two-pitch out is a real bummer.

It's a head-scratcher for me –*the only real reason I can figure that they'd refuse to put in 1-0, 0-1, and even 0-0 is in the interest of time... but the amount of time it takes to throw two pitches is relatively short. Balance that out with the chance that you might get the guy out on the first pitch you throw... and you're looking at a matter of seconds' difference played out over an entire game.

That's to say nothing of wanting to be able to us Quick Counts on offense or defense only.

Here's to hoping that they take another look at Quick Counts. Great feature that could be made even better.

I made a bug report for the weird Quick Count pitch count numbers, in case anyone else is bothered by it. I know, minor stuff, but whatever.

The reason it doesnt have any 1 pitch counts is because it messed with the whole setup or at least thats what Ive gathered from the few things Ramone has said about it. As for the one or two pitch out idea, its still technically possible if you start an AB with a 1-1 count and the first pitch is hit for an out as I believe I read the last pitch of every AB isnt counted when using quick counts thus making it a 2 pitch out.

Ramone has already said that this is something he is where of and that he is looking to fix.

That's great to hear. Do you have the link where he said so?

In Game. Log, it counts warm up pitches...

just begin a game, do all your warm up pitches, throw a pitch to the first hitter and it will say 9 pitches in game log

Ah, so that explains the bug report I filed about Matt's commentary always giving a pitch count 8 pitches higher than it should be. His commentary is pulling the Game Log value, which is counting the warm up pitches.
