I have 28 walks in seven games using quick counts. Not really seeing the issue. If anything, it's an issue with your slider settings.

Re: Lack of walks still an issue
I just don't get people sometimes, it's like they feel they HAVE to speak out (even when it shouldn't happen).
Kehlis, I cannot leave the catcher glove off simply because it is a video game and I am not within that universe to be able to "feel" where it will go. I get what you are saying, I don't know, maybe I'll try a game or two with some specific roster as the good ones start coming out.
I had played ONLY meter pitching until last year, and I asked Knight his opinion about walks and he said give classic a try. It is better, but still not there. Thanks for the thoughts!Comment

Re: Lack of walks still an issue
Strike% is irrelevant in this case, because every pitch you swing outside the zone is a strike too. The true measure of AI pitcher strike% is a stat called: Zone% It shows the percentage of total pitches thrown inside the strike zone, no matter if the batter swung at the pitch or not.
In my view, the first thing you should try to test is Zone%. The league avg in 2013 was 44,7% Leading the league the Rockies with 46,4% and last place the Giants with 43,4%
If you get this number right, then you get the right number of pitches outside the zone (about 55%). In this case the only one to blame for the lack of walks is the player him/herself.
It is very easy to calculate it and I think 15 games are a good sample size to measure it. (about 2000 pitches thrown)
All you need to do is calculate O-Pitch (pitches thrown outside the zone) this way:
O-Pitch = Total pitches thrown - (Balls + Chased)
After this, you calculate Z-Pitch (Pitches in the strike zone)
Z-Pitch = Total pitches thrown - O-Pitch
Then Zone% is easy:
Zone% = (Z-Pitch / Total pitches thrown) * 100
Hope this clears things up!
EDIT: Oh and the league avg for Swing% is: 46,4% The highest number by Rockies with 48,9% and the lowest number by RedSox with 43,7%
This means, that you should have a Take percentage around 54% along with Zone% around 45% to get the walks you need.
Zone% should be adjusted with the sliders, but Take% depends on the player.Last edited by ScouserHUN; 05-15-2014, 04:35 AM.Comment

Re: Lack of walks still an issue
I think I realized the issue with walks in this game. It seems as though pitchers with a low walk number actually throw more balls in the strike zone than pitchers without. Reason seems to be someone with bad control throws meatballs rather than pitches outside the zone, that seems to be the way SCEA shows someone with bad control. I've seen numerous times where I have no problem walking with pitchers with high BB numbers. I often see pitchers with high BB numbers throw around 63% strikes where pitchers with low BB thow about 73%
The other thing I noticed is when I'm pitching and I go 3-0 to someone, my next pitch is always a meatball, even with perfect timing when I place the cursor high and tight. There seems to be a stupid logic that makes pitchers throw meatballs when they go 3-0 and 3-1. This happens for both me and CPU. I had a couple of at bats where I was 3-0 and then the CPU threw 9 straight strikes that I keep fouling off.
The control logic needs to change in this game, bad control shouldn't equal meatballs, it should equal the inability to throw a pitch in the zoneComment

Having a hard time fouling off pitches in order to prolong the at bat. I normally end up using contact swing when trying to foul them off, but they end up going into play as a weak grounder or pop up. Any advice on intentionally fouling pitches off? Do I just need to swing earlier / later?Last edited by FrostOX9; 05-17-2014, 02:46 AM.Comment

Re: Lack of walks still an issue
I play on Dynamic Difficulty and use quick counts. I have pitch accuracy and consistency both at 1 for the User and CPU.
In my first 22 games in Franchise I walked 70 times and allowed 71 walks. 141 walks total or 6.41 per game.Comment

Re: Lack of walks still an issue
I still don't walk as much as I should but that's because I swing too much at the first or second pitch.
Since I moved the difficulty up I've walked a bit more. I'm pretty good at judging pitches out of the zone but I get a bit impatient sometimes.

Re: Lack of walks still an issue
This is the main problem that I have when trying to draw walks. Once I get to a 3-0, 3-1 or 3-2 count, pitchers will just keep throwing strikes until I have to swing at them. Usually, they'll just throw a fastball right down the middle, regardless of who is at bat.

Sure, close to 30 years, but you must have hit it. It was my sliders.

Re: Lack of walks still an issue
I think CPU strike% is still a little bit high, but I emphasize "a little bit."
I see a HUGE step forward from last year. Even with default sliders, I'm consistently drawing at least 2 walks in every game I play on default. It's nowhere near as bad as it ever was in other years.
Ditto for walks while pitching. I'm having trouble finding the strike zone on a consistent basis. It's wonderful. I have actually been tempted to raise Human Pitcher Control. That has never been the case before. Ever.Comment
