The catcher's mitt: any gameplay significance?

When I'm pitching (using analog controls), sometimes I'll see the catcher's mitt just before I pitch. I assume the catcher is asking for a pitch at a particular target? Is there a gameplay bonus for hitting that target? Also, what if I'd rather pitch to a different location -- can I "shake off" the catcher's location?

Also, I thought I read that I could ask the catcher for advice on the next pitch by hitting L2, but that doesn't seem to do anything. Is the highlighted pitch icon the catcher's "call"?

    Thanks in advance.

The mitt is the catcher's suggestion. You'll notice one of your pitches will be blinking (his pitch suggestion) and the virtual catcher's mitt shows where he suggests you throw it. These suggestions are supposedly determined by historical statistics, but who really knows.

There is no bonus for hitting the suggestion; it's entirely and option that can be adjusted in the Menus. If you don't turn it off, you can still outright ignore him and throw any pitch to any location; it's just a suggestion.

I don't pitch much at all when I play (I mostly play RTTS as a SS) but one time I threw the pitch exactly where the catcher wanted and I gave up a two run homer in the 9th to lose it. So overall maybe its helpful but its not the holy grail.

Secretly, the catcher and the hitter are on the same team -- the AIs.

Some people think if you throw to a different area from where the catcher wants it it increases the likelihood of a pass ball.

I don't believe that but it is something to beaware of.

and OP, it is R2 to bring up the pitch suggestion.

              Ah, R2, thanks.

I do tend to throw at the mitt; as you said, maybe you increase the chances of a passed ball if you don't. I figure better safe than sorry.
