When to use each type of swing?
Just wondering when everyone uses normal swing, contact swing, and power swing? I'm in the middle of one of the worst slumps of my Show career and have been playing around with this. I have always used power swing 3-0, 3-1, 2-0, contact swing any time theres 2 strikes, and normal swing all the rest. What about you guys?Last edited by baseballkid97; 06-07-2014, 02:00 AM.Tags: None -
Re: When to use each type of swing?
Normal swing in almost every situation other than 3-0/1. Then I use power swing. Don't really use contact swing.

Re: When to use each type of swing?
Contact when I'm down in count with two strikes. 0-2, 1-2
Normal when I'm ahead or tied or full. 1-0, 1-1, 2-1, 2-2, 3-2
Power when I'm way ahead and feel like trying. 3-0, 3-1,
Power works great when it works, but I have a hard time using it with pure analog. Zone it works great.Comment

Re: When to use each type of swing?
Normal 9 times outta 10
3-0 I take all the way so I'm not power swinging, but sometimes on 3-1 I will, depending on game situation.
Also sometimes I'll power swing on the very first pitch, looking for a fastball, if it's not there I take it.
Contact swing I use on 0-2 or 1-2 against lefties with my lefty RTTS player (I have major trouble with lefties)Comment

Re: When to use each type of swing?
Normal almost exclusively. If I'm down 0-2 with a guy that is slumping or my pitcher, I'll use contact to try to get the opposing pitcher's pitch count up by fouling off balls. Almost never use power unless it's 3-1 (I don't swing 3-0) and it's Stanton or some monster at the plate.Comment

Re: When to use each type of swing?
I seldom use the Power swing...since I can hit a HR or even 2b run with my normal swing (Contact R/L - 60/60; Power R/L 60/55 in my AAA). I guess I should follow some of you to use Power swing on 3-0/1. Contact when im behind or there's a runner in 3B and there's only 1 out.Comment

Re: When to use each type of swing?
from reading these I'm surprised how many people seem to automatically take a 3-0 pitch. if the situation is right and you get a good pitch to hit then why not? only time i could think of automatically taking no matter what is if you're losing a close game in late innings.Comment

Re: When to use each type of swing?
I have actually learned to use normal on 0-2, 1-2 counts with less than two outs and a man on first (or first and second) with good to great hitters.
I have cut down on hitting into double plays by doing that. Contact is great, but can bite you on the *** in those particular situations.
With weak hitters it can as well. So sometimes I use my gut as well. I have been able to fight off pitches with normal that are close to or in the zone.
But when no one is on base or men on base are in a no force situation, contact when behind in the count. Especially to hit a fly ball and sac fly over runners or score with less than two outs.
Be careful using contact when you can hit into a double play. Sometimes it's actually better just to strike out (with less than two out and men in force situations on base) vs ending an inning...it really has helped me over the course of my current season being cognizant of that. And remember really good hitters can fight pitches off with a normal swing as long as your not chasing balls way out of the zone.
Contact does let you check swing a little better as well BTW. So that is a factor too. If you facing a guy with a great curve, slider or split finger that day...contact can help you check those get out 0-2, 1-2 pitches.
I rarely if ever use Power swing. Maybe once in a blue moon with my best power hitters up 3-1 in the count and with a lead where I can afford to take some risk.
I never swing on 3-0

Re: When to use each type of swing?
As I mentioned in the OP, I was in the middle of one of my worst slumps ever the past week or so. I have finally started to break out of it the last day or two and one reason was that I began to move away from contact swings. I had always used it in any count with 2 strikes no matter what, but as Armor & Sword said I was just hitting a lot of weak ground balls to 2nd and shortstop, and you can usually foul off close pitches with normal swing anyway.
However, I also agree with how he said the contact swing helps with check swings when you're facing a pitcher with a good breaking ball.
I've also started using power swing more often early in the count with big guys like McCann and Teixeira.
Still don't understand how so many people automatically take the 3-0 pitch. I've had a decent amount of success power swinging 3-0 with power hitters and I really recommend that more of you try it out.Comment

Re: When to use each type of swing?
I only use contact when I have a guy on third, less than 2 outs, 2 strikes, and the IF is not playing in. I might consider it with 0 outs and a guy on second to move him over if the hitter does not have a good VIS rating. I use power with a man on first or nobody on and 2 outs when you need the xbh to try and get a run. That is basically it, situation always dictates.Comment

Re: When to use each type of swing?
I almost always use normal swings except for-
Contact when i have a guy on third with less than two outs and just have to put the ball in play. Used especially with weaker hitters.
Power- if i guess a pitch correctly in a favorable count. I can nerver pick up the outside slider from a rhp to a rhb.. I always guess that pitch down and away and if i guess it right ... I hit square, wait on that baby, and drive her into the rc field gap. ( if of course it hangs over the plate)
Otherwise, its always normal swingsComment
