    Re: What is your WAR?

I am having an amazing 3rd season and I expect to break that 10 WAR. I only have about 15 games left.

    So far I have 54 HR's 130+ RBI's....370 avg....450 OBP and 788 SLG wit 125 SB's.....Legend difficulty

My team still might fall short of the playoffs though...we rank 1st in offense but for some reason our 80+ overall pitchers cannot even be mediocre (Cardinals)....plus our manager continues to have the weirdest bullpen ever. We only have 3 righties and they are the closer and 2 set up guys with 4 lefties with 3 of them being long relief....

I moved back over to SS too and we traded away Cabrera for some good young 2b. Our gm has made smart moves, but the manager does some weird things with the bullpen as he continues to use guys wit 6+ ERAs in a set up role and for some reason a 90 overall Rosenthal is garbage.

I've done 7+ seasons in RTTS the past 2 years and I have never made the playoffs once lol. MLB 13 I was stuck in Seattle and we'd always win 80-86 games, but never do any better.

Anyone that wants to download the spreadsheet and tweak it and use it to calculate WAR for your teams, your RttS or the entire league like I did go right ahead. Most of the formulas I pulled off of Fangraphs, including the park factors and the positional adjustments.

To use it you will need to complete the top table on the tab labeled "Assumptions" this will calculate the true replacement level of players in your virtual league, and will even split it between the American and National Leagues. In MLBTS 13 I would shuffle through each team and put them in the number of IP, PA or AB's into an individual cell (you'll see the cells are broken out into each league). This will allow the formulas to calculate all of the proper components of WAR as it relates to batting and pitching statistics.

After you fill out the "Assumptions" tab you can tab over and go to your team's position players tab or your pitchers tab. With the positional players you will need to manually include the positional adjustment (taken from Fangraphs) for each of your players. Fill out column with a yellow background on the header and it will calculate the WAR for every player on your team. The only caveat on the pitching side is the "win expectancy" difference between starters and relievers. In the WAR column for pitchers the formula subtracts league average win expectancy from your pitcher's personal run environment, so you will have to manually change that from "-.38" for starters to "-.47" for relievers. It's a pretty easy process.

I used to do these calculations for every player on the 40 man rosters in both leagues when I completed a season, which is why you'll see tabs for AL and NL position players and pitchers, but you don't have to use those tabs at all unless you're a stat junky like me. My only challenges in the WAR calculations stemmed from defensive and base running values outside of wSB and wCS. I tended to base my DsR (defensive runs saved) off of who won the Gold Glove at the position, and manually insert the number I felt best correlated. But, I would love to hear suggestions on how to tweak those to make them more realistic.

Anyways, here is the google docs link to the spreadsheet. I originally created it using OpenOffice but it should convert to Excel when it's downloaded. Let me know what y'all think and i apologize for the long post.

I am now just seeing this and it sounds awesome. What kind of file is that? I can't pull it up on my Mac, for some reason.

          Re: What is your WAR?

3rd full season in the books. We finally made the playoffs and went 90-72. We scored 833 runs and led the league in runs scored and run differential too I believe. But we only got the 2nd WC spot.

          I hit .375, 62 hr's, 169 rbi's, .439 OBP, 798 SLG, 140 SB's at a 90% rate, 209 hits total, 140 runs scored, 66 BB's to 39 K's. I will calculate and post the WAR later.

Oh and I won MVP....I hit 2 grandslams in the last week to give us some big wins and I hit about 8 homeruns in the last 2 weeks. We had an amazing September to sneak into the postseason.

We face Atlanta in a 1 game playoff...

              You're only using $4.5M dollars/WAR? It's closer to like $7.5M.

Dang, cardinal nice season. What sliders do you use? Just curious.

Also, AC, you're correct that the price for a win has gone up, but this template is dated pretty far back. 2008, I believe. The league averages for the other stats are dated as well. Not sure if he updated them himself, but by today's standards his WAR is probably more than what he posted. haha

This is the values from 02-08.

If you look at Tulo's WAR and projected FA value on FGs, its about $5.5M? I think that is SS specific, but I may be wrong.

The constants should be updated yeah. Do you know if there's a way to keep a data connection running once you upload to skydrive?

Lol, it's an excel feature. You can basically import a table you'd find on a page and it updates regularly. So, say, the Fangraphs Guts! section.

I was thinking OP could import that for constants (wOBA linear weights, wOBA scale, cFIP, R/W, and so on) so that it would always be accurate (and manually update $/WAR) but as soon as you upload the file to the internet the connection breaks.

If you can, I am unaware of it. I just manually export the data into excel from FGs. For my franchise, I created an excel file and calculated the averages of wOBA and the likes from the dynasty. Its a tedious update, but I get franchise specific WAR estimates that way.

This is what it deals with. Rather than having to update the wOBA weights and stuff every time you calculate, it just automatically updates every time you open the document.

I just took a class last semester in excel and using Solver and other features. I am unsure if you can link it to the internet to collect data for you. I'll revisit my book and see if it has any info on that. That would be pretty cool. We just manually plugged in all the data and ran the system. How awesome would it be if there was a site that linked your franchise data so you could look at it away from the PlayStation.

I would also love to see them incorporate WAR in the game. Its becoming a pretty prevalent stat so the audience for it is here, I think. This is kind of off topic, and I am not 100% sure, but I think they (SCEA and whomever) has to get permission for certain advanced stats. The advanced stats in this game are all Bill James stats, I believe. I don't think they have the main stats that BR and FGs use. Whenever someone discusses WAR they usually mention where they get it (BR or FG). I think I read somewhere that FGs uses FIP in their WAR, for example, because they have an agreement with the FIP creator. It was an article or a Q&A where someone was discussing why they chose FIP over SIERA in their calculation.

FIP is descriptive and SIERA is predictive for one, and it's intuitive, but there's plenty of reason for WAR to be in the game. All the stats are there.

I just use my own sliders. Hitting is on Legend, foul balls are at 6, cpu strike consistency and control are at 4, fielder speed and reaction at 3, and everything else is pretty much left alone.
