Re: Long time zone hitter, moving to timing. Maybe.

I haven't played in almost two weeks, been traveling etc., but I'm almost tempted to try turning on the PCI so that I can see where I'm aiming in real time. I don't like screen clutter, especially while batting, but the old baseball games had PCI's and I hit alright with them on when I was a kid. Maybe it will change things for the better.

Can you elaborate here? What are some of the frustrations of timing?

        I can think of three:

        1) The PCI being in a silly location

        2) The PCI being in a silly location

        3) The PCI being in a silly location.

Right, but all of that is chalked up to the player attributes, correct? I can live with that. I've played enough of this game to realize that at least for me, that it's just too much for me to try and move the PCI and swing. I need to concentrate solely on where the pitch is and my timing.

I may go back eventually but I'm 134 games into my franchise and I'm terrible with zone. I'm going to give timing a chance and see what happens.

Hitting is just frustrating in general. I'm definitely reaching that frustrated point but I went ahead and check out the real life stats of MLB teams right now. I'm gonna stick with AS despite my frustrations bc at the end of the day my numbers aren't that off, just frustrating because my star is struggling.

The MLB average right now is .252 (AL is .255 | NL is .249)
              High: Colorado .282
Low: San Diego .218 (next is CHC .238)

I personally found Veteran hitting too easy with timing. The CPU throws too many balls that catch a ton of the plate. I weakened my offense and it was still too easy. Then I got to AS and it's a damn challenge. I'm in the mid 240's (32 gms) hitting right now with the Pirates. The most frustrating is McCutchen who is hitting .200! It's not the RH batter/RHP thing either because Starling Marte is leading my team hitting .300

It's just baseball. Hit a rocket at a guy. GIDP with the bases loaded. Pop up a ball down the middle. It happens.

I wish I could pitch with GPC's and hit with 0-0 counts!

Timing stay far away unless you want a new set of frustrations nothing worse than seeing a 3-1 fastball down the middle and you power swing only for your PCI to be placed up and in

Great post. This is me as well. I'm frustrated because I'm dead last in average (now a whopping .229) and RBIs. I'm 29th in home runs. So I'm pretty much last in almost every offensive category. But as I've said before, I'm the Cubs. So it's kind of acceptable.

And I absolutely refuse to go lower than All-Star. As you said things change when you do that and that would open up an entirely new can of worms. I like how the pitchers pitch on All-Star. And at the end of the day I continually tell myself that I cannot possibly get any worse the more I play. So as I get deeper into my franchise guys like Baez and Bryant hopefully will help to improve my offense.

I'm going to roll with default All-Star on timing for a few games and see how it feels. The only sliders I've lowered are pitch speed and a few things to make the CPU throw more balls.

And that's the other thing. One of the reasons I'm last in runs scored (yet another category where I'm at the bottom) is because I'm also last in drawing base on balls. That's the great equalizer right there. If you draw more base on balls it changes so much. It will obviously improve your runs scored but I think will increase your overall average over time. Because runners are being held by infielders, you can hit-and-run, etc, players may get thrown out on the base paths on base hits (which would increase your average).

I hear you. But to each their own. After 100+ games for me using zone I found that I could never, ever make an adjustment after the pitch was released. And I found myself jockeying the analog stick sporadically trying to hit pitches. I could never hit high pitches with zone because my reaction time simply isn't good enough to move the PCI up after a pitch. I think with timing ratings of players factors in a lot more and I'm fine with that. I doubt the PCI with a guy like Mike Trout is going to be off very often if you have perfect timing on a 3-1 pitch down the middle. However, players like Mark Reynolds may have their PCI in BFE on a 3-1 pitch with perfect timing.

Ideally, I'd like a system that allows you to swing in a general location of where the ball is even AFTER you've pressed the swing button. Pretty much how MVP's hitting was. In that game (for those of you who don't know) you moved the stick to attempt to pull the ball or go the other way with it. So if you tried to pull a ball that was way outside you'd just cap it and hit a weak grounder. But every once in a while (I did this with Soriano many times) you could pull, and crush a pitch way outside. There was no "PCI."

And to be honest, as much as I love the Show, I feel like the hitting with zone is dated. I've played baseball video games since I was about 12 years old back in the early 90's. There's not many baseball video games that I haven't played. But the idea of having some kind of box, cursor, or in this case the PCI seems to be often times too difficult and doesn't feel organic. It's a simple game of moving a circle on the screen to where the ball is going to be and then swinging in time. When I think about it that way it seems less like a baseball game to me. So, while I may go back to zone eventually, I'm going with timing for now. But at the same time I don't like having absolutely no control over where I'm swinging. I guess I'm giving up one thing for another. My inability to make any kind of adjustment will be gone which is a good thing for me, but gone also is the feeling that I have to actually swing in the right location.

The bottom line for me is that after many games I wasn't having fun anymore. I never hit well but I told myself, "you'll get better." Well, I don't know if I will. So it's time for a change.

I dont do that at all lol simply place PCI in lower portion of zone and wait for my pitch there, if get down in count maybe place PCI a little higher and swing with contact or regular swing. Currently hitting .280 as a team in RidinThaPine Franchise

In 4,574 at-bats (24th in the league) I have 245 base on balls (last in the league) and 820 strikeouts (second fewest in the league).

I'm not sure we're on the same page here. You're saying that you typically do not move the PCI? You just place it in a zone and wait for your pitch?
