Expanded Strike Zone for Great Pitchers
I feel like vision ratings for hitters in this game goes a little ways in determining the calls of pitches on the black when calls are variable. I always feel squeezed when I'm facing Miggy or David Wright. So, and I say this growing up a hugh Braves fan, wouldn't it be cool if pitchers with great command get the benefit? Add an extra element of pain when facing Kershaw or Sale.Tags: None -

I read somewhere that the higher the BB/9 is the more on the black calls will go the pitcher's way. -
Re: Expanded Strike Zone for Great Pitchers
This could be completely coincidental and/or mental, but I feel like when I am using a guy like Santana who has great control, I get the borderline calls all of the time in my favor. It's the same with most of my staff who all have great control. Except when I throw in a guy like Strop(from a trade) who is wild, I hardly get anything called unless it's a swing and a miss.
That may go with what baseballsim said, but I just feel that is my experience. It also feels like after I get that first strikeout with Kimbrel, everything gets called his way.“No one is more hated than he who speaks the truth.”

Re: Expanded Strike Zone for Great Pitchers
I don't think player ratings have anything to do with how variable umpires are. It just goes against how the pitcher-batter matchup is designed in this game (i.e., Plate Discipline rating doesn't make the opposing pitcher throw more balls or less effective in locating his pitches to produce more walks, just because it's not how things work in real life).
There might be a point in how some pitchers with "tenure" get more calls to their advantage (as a Met fan I still hold grudges against how wide the zone was for Glavine and Maddux back in the day). But as it is, I don't think variable strike zone is offset by each umpire's tendency enough to really notice this, even if that gets implemented. (Plus people will start bitching how the game is giving calls to CPU's favor.)
And with the more accurate pitch tracking, I'm not sure if we are living in a baseball era in which so much variability in strike zone by umpire is tolerated. I read somewhere umpires are using PITCHf/x data to correct their tendency (to make mistake calls).Comment

Re: Expanded Strike Zone for Great Pitchers
Cracked up when I seen Braves_94 started this thread. The two things that come to mind :
1. Not that a specific pitcher gets certain calls but if they are throwing good pitches on edges it defines the strike zone a little better and you can work your ump one way or the other. With an ace pitcher. Also to add to this with great control it becomes more obvious when you try throwing a pitch 3 inches outside compared to a pitch little off the black. There's more of a " he meant to throw it there" he pitching not throwing to see wht hits the zone.
2. The deception of great control. That's wht makes control so great. The distance from the rubber half way to the plate that distance where the batter is trying to pick up the pitch I think is where the great control guys own. Movement in that area is so crucial. Movement in that area is very little but it means so much. There's very little to see. So say it's a fastball from Johan Santana to a right handed batter on the outside black. The pitch to start with out of his hand is going to look more outside than one right on the edge of the plate. It could only look like 2 inches but in that distance 2 inches is huge. My knee jerk reaction in that crucial time is outside. Then as it comes in, you start thinking Maybe , it's gettin close .... STTEEEEERIKE 3 !
I hope someone follows my logic. It doesn't help with variable calls but maybe as to why better batters are fooled.I play MLB exclusively with my cousin. Usually looking for info on Franchises. We played minor league baseball as 9-10 YOs on the Zephyrs.Comment

Re: Expanded Strike Zone for Great Pitchers
Keep an eye out on the pitches that have high confidence in your pitcher's repertoire.
It seems to me that when you curve ball has a full meter of confidence, you see more calls given to the outer and lower edge of the plate.
Likewise, a cutter that is full-confidence, will be given under the hands and sometimes barely touching the plate at all.
You may want to use your go-to pitch of the outing, as I seem to get more calls my way when I am rolling with a certain pitch.
