Do you think he's a bust and that's why not shown as top prospect? Would not using batting gloves indicate anything? I'm just baffled why he isn't a top prospect, no batting gloves, and overall a rather low 57 at age 20, especially since he's supposed to be 99 potential.

What do you make of this player?
The player, Nigel Shearer, is from a live roster update within past month. He is in the Braves minor league system with a potential of 99! He plays first base and overall is 57! Now he's 20 years old but not listed as a top prospect, which I find very odd. Another rather odd thing about him is no batting gloves.

It could be the other prospexts have better attribute ratings then Shearer.
I dont know if the prospect ranking looks at potential as the most important attribute or if it's even in the top 5 of import.Michigan Man -

Don't take this the wrong way, but I make of this that you should consider using custom rosters rather than SCEA versions. Much less head scratching to do.Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment

I haven't found a custom roster that I like. Now I'm not saying I like SCEA rosters either. I do edits and with that prefer SCEA's roster.Comment

Then find a top 50 prospect and re-create(copy Shearer's ratings) him with Shearer and export/import over the old Shearer problem solved.Last edited by ShowTyme15; 10-08-2014, 09:30 PM.Comment

He is 20 years old and seems like a long journey from 57 to 99.Comment

Re: What do you make of this player?
What do I make of the player? Sounds like a promising prospect who will take a couple years to develop. He's not a Mike Trout/Bryce Harper instant-star like 99% of players who are drafted.
The lack of batting gloves is more surprising than him not being an instant-star.SOS Madden League (PS4) | League Archives

Projects well with a lot of upside but has work to do to turn his tools/athleticism into baseball skills and production. If he does and all goes well, he could be a superstar.
Hopefully, he'll progress rapidly through the minors and should get training on areas that will help round him out as a player or cover for any serious raw areas in his basic game (contact, power, range, speed) and then refine anything further he doesn't pick up at the majors.
His age buys him plenty of time to grow into his frame and mature as a ballplayer as he begins his professional career, especially if he's handled well with his training and development in the minors.
That's what I would make of him.
As far as not having a Top 50 sticker, that depends as much as his current ability as his potential. He maybe too raw yet to be a Top 50 guy. Then again, he might get the sticker later (I've seen that happen) perhaps has other guys around the league lose it (like they get called to the majors), or this kid progresses some more."Some people call it butterflies, but to him, it probably feels like pterodactyls in his stomach." --Plesac in MLB18Comment

He has the Miguel Olivo batting stance.
By the way, I don't consider Harper anywhere close to Trout. Comparing their seasons shows wide difference and for me potential.Comment

Now this likely won't matter much since I'm playing Season mode, just curious. I have to say he looks great! Whoever created him spent a good amount of time on his appearance. One thing that baffles me is he doesn't use batting gloves but has gloves in back pocket (right).Comment

Re: What do you make of this player?
Top prospect/Top 50 takes into account current development (i.e. OVR/actual skill ratings).
Just like in real life, a stud that's close to being MLB-ready or is borderline-MLB-ready will be rated higher than perhaps a slightly bigger stud (I mean 94 and 99 are both studs-to-be) that's a couple years away. A 65 OVR is borderline MLB ready or possibly ready for a try out in a smaller role at MLB if the organization is so inclined. Yes, 65 can be usable at the bigs - the ratings seems "lower scaled" than say Madden where 80 is average. 70 is about average here, imo, so 65 is on the cusp.
It's like, if the Nats left Harper in AAA, would he be a better prospect than another hitter that projects highly but has a few significant issues to work on like another 21-year-old who's still challenged by AAA pitching whereas Harper would probably destroy AAA?
That's what you're seeing, the game's attempt to represent current development as well as A-grade potential. (Obviously, Harper is no 65 OVR, but that was the first stud MLB young hitter I could readily think of aside from Trout LOL)
If you want him to have a Top 50 sticker (I know you said it's isn't something that upsets you), try giving him a higher OVR, especially by increasing contact/power/speed, see if you can't get the game to give it to him. Edit him up and sim ahead a bit. I don't know how often the game checks but it does check during the season.Last edited by KBLover; 10-10-2014, 01:03 PM."Some people call it butterflies, but to him, it probably feels like pterodactyls in his stomach." --Plesac in MLB18Comment

Re: What do you make of this player?
I could but won't edit his attributes to increase possibility of being a top prospect. Since I'm playing season mode, I just don't see it as a major concern. If I was playing franchise mode, then I would give that a try.
If he was say 18 with a 57 overall, then I could better understand a 57 overall and 99 potential. However, 20 years old with 57 overall and 99 potential seems a bit awkward to me. The top prospect CP (94 potential) with that 65 overall is definitely not ready for closing in the majors.
I see your point about him making it in a few years and eventually reaching his potential. Still, if he's expected to be a 99, I think many people besides myself would think he should be a top prospect. If the thinking is he's reaching a 99, he should be considered a top prospect. I just don't understand how the thought can be he's a potential 99 but not a top prospect, even with his low overall at this point. After all, they think or someone thinkshe will be a 99.

Re: What do you make of this player?
I guess you're referring to what I said about players who are drafted in franchise mode. Sorry, didn't think top prospects from SCEA live roster have anything to do with drafted players in franchise mode. Aside from that, I was really interested to know if this player was supposed to be a bust because he is 99 potential and not a top prospect.Comment
