Re: MLB 15 : Road to the Show Thread

Rookie SP, Got the ball game 7 of the World Series after a terrible outing earlier in the series. I was actually nervous to play this game lol Thankfully, I had one of my best outings of the year 7.1 IP 3H 0ER 0BB 5K sadly it was 0-0 when they pull me and we end up losing 1-0 to the Cardinals I was pretty upset going from Game 7 starter to coming out of the bullpen to start the season but after 5 appearances they've moved me into the starting line up.

Stats: 3-0 39.0 IP 0.00 ERA 3BB 48K. Obviously the 0.00 ERA isn't sustainable but it's felt great this far after having a 4+ ERA when I came up

My girlfriend lives almost 200 miles from me and it's a very tough balancing act, playing the game and spending time with her. But she understands the life and death importance of this game.

Anyway. Two more careers have spawned from my last SP showcase. Knowing that the game will throw you to The Bigs immediately I chose to play with Orioles and Cardinals (the latter is the one I'm going with). A funny thing about the Orioles guy though. Since he plays in the AL I didn't put any points at all in the batting section. In my first AB in an interleague game the bases were loaded with two outs an I swung at the first pitch. Grand slam to straightaway center field!

The Cardinals pitcher is putting up great numbers:
11-0 with a 1.23 ERA (0.76 WHIP) in 13 starts (all quality) with two shutouts and five complete games. His bat is really hot as well even though Contact and Power are all below 20 (+7).

My pitchers are all based on Carlos Martinez so there is a lot of velocity. He features 4SFB, 2SFB, 12-6CB, Circle change and a Slider. I had some problems with inducing double plays with my Cardinals guy but when I increased the break on the CIR to 91 they are starting to come. The Slider can get some double plays but it's a hard pitch to control and if you hang it, it's gone...

I'm thinking about replacing the 2SFB with a Sinker but I'm kinda worried about the pitch calling from the catcher when the Sinker is in the five spot of my pitches. Does anyone know if that matters?

Re: MLB 15 : Road to the Show Thread

Oliver Thornton 2.0, a much improved and far less incompetent incarnation is off plane.

I posted a rambling tale of how this came to be in Part 1, hence to be know by the title: A Great Big, Bushy Beard.

From the prodigious days playing with the London Mets Oliver Thornton found baseball an oddly discriminatory sport. As bad as that may sound, it discriminates equally. Specifically, in discriminates on handedness. "ohhh, you're a lefty" Well you can play outfield", said Coach Churchill. No short-stop, no second base. Oliver wept a solitary tear. "But you'll have an advantage over righties when hitting, and that's most of the pitchers!" Churchill went on to say. Thornton dabbed his singular tear away and felt confused. Oliver Thornton is no "lefty" though. He defies labels (much to the disappointment of the baseball world. His motor skills being unusually constructed in the sense that he bats Left-Handed and Throws Right-Handed. In another world, another game Thornton may have played Centre-Field, but not today! His ambidexterity will permit him to be a Left-Hitting, Right-Hand Throwing Second Baseman!

Thornton, arrived in the Land of MLB, getting his first smell of corn, leaving Des Moines Airport, Iowa. From there, a man with a long beard stood with a sign bearing his name. Thornton used the step-ladder provided and completed the minor climbing exercise into the passenger seat of the unnecessarily large car the man (name Bill) had to take him to his final destination. That destination? The 2015 Prospect Showcase, taking place at Veterans Stadium, Cedar Rapids - Iowa.

Thornton knew three things about Iowa. 1. It has a huge crater from a huge meteor impact. 2. Kurt Warner is from there. 3. Slipknot have an album called Iowa (presumably they are from there). Thornton put Slipknot on his iPhone, periodically nodding and smiling at Bill. Eventually, the novelty of Slipknot wore off, Thornton concludes they had a difficult time moving on from High School social dynamics and decided to listen instead to some calming words from Mr Kurt Warner. Before he knew it, he must have fallen asleep and he was awoken by Bill in the car park ("lot") if the stadium.

Before he know it, he was clad in the red of the "International Region", looking around for potential friends. Everyone was predominantly Japanese or South Korean... or Dutch. Where all the Canadians, Dominicans and others had gone, remains a mystery... Coach Roosevelt and Coach Truman were assigned to look after the International Region. They seemed to take a liking to Thornton from the get go. Giving him all sorts of encouragement. For so reason they did not seem to like the Japanese. Strange.

Thornton played three games in the Showcase. Two went very well. One less so. Bill, who had no declared himself Thornton's agent, kept offering his unsolicited advice after each game. Saying after my 0-3 (with 1 RBI on a Sac Fly) in Game 1, "Tight luck kid, we all have bad days" or words to that effect... Shut the **** up Bill!! You drive the car. That's the extent of your role!

In Game 2, against the nicely attired Central Region Thornton went a lovely 3-4 with a Single and two Doubles. 3 RBIs too, lovely. In the field, things were a little dubious. One dude tried to steal. Wait, no. One guy did steal. Thornton was supposed to follow an arrow to go to receive the catchers throw but since nobody had told him this was a part of the role he was caught out. Where the hell is Bill with his words of wisdom when you need him.

In Game 3, Thornton goes 2-3 (single, double) with a Walk and an RBI. He's realizing there is more thinking to be done at 2nd base than he had anticipated. Coach Roosevelt keeps yelling at him to go to Double Play Depth. One play he's leaning toward 2nd base as if someone is cooking a tasty meal, but then scurries back to his spot wen the pitcher throws. But Thornton has the basics. Guy on 1st? Throw to 2nd!. Bases empty, go to 1st! Never Dive. Ever. You just look like a fool. sometimes run to second base and people will throw the ball at you. Sweet.

After some more useless words from Bill, Thornton enters the draft. He is listed as mid-1st Round prospect. (this is vast improvement over the 6th Round I was in the first game). He has list of teams he wants to lay for. His beloved Brewers are at the top. After that it's all about nice stadiums and nice uniforms. Alas, it is beyond Thornton's control.

Some of the preferred options pass on Thornton (fools) including the Brewers, Reds and Twins . Then he is selected... He recognizes the logo on the screen well... and is not sure what to feel. Confused? A little sick? Or happy? Potentially a chance to be part of baseball history? Hmmm.... In his head is the song from Star Wars, the one when Darth Vader comes on the screen... Oliver Thornton, Second Baseman, from the International Region is selected by... THE NEW YORK YANKEES

Re: MLB 15 : Road to the Show Thread

I really need help with my SP!

I played 6-7 games last night and it was a nightmare when I was throwing my Slider (Vel: 80 Ctrl: 88 Brk: 71). I couldn't for the life of me throw it as a strike or get someone to chase because it went WAY out of the zone. And if it doesn't do that it will hang right over the middle of the plate and it's a goner.

Now I'm thinking about replacing it for another strikeout pitch. My arsenal:
          4SFB (100 mph)
          2SFB (96 mph)
          12-6 CV (82 mph)
          CIR (89 mph)
          Slider (89 mph)

Is the Splitter a good strikeout pitch with my arsenal? I'm going nuts using the Slider.

          PLEASE, give me some advice!

          EDIT: SOLVED
Instead of deleting I'll just post what I did to remedy the problem.

I simply replaced the slider with a slow cutter and it's working much better. It behaves basically the same way and it's much easier to handle.

This is VERY disappointing to hear. I assume this is NOT the case for Franchise mode too?

Re: MLB 15 : Road to the Show Thread

Does anyone have any specific ground rules they play with? I have for years been playing and trying to grind out careers in the minors. I still have yet to figure out a good plan to do a SP. Right now I am playing on HOF, and am getting hit all over the park, but if I go down to All-Star, I feel like it would be to easy and I will be back in the majors.

For a batter, I think I have figured out the a good technique. I started a CF on HOF, with good equipment and loaded up his Arm and Speed. I made a house rule of only increasing his attributes +5 per year, and any attribute I didn't upgrade, that +5 could go else where, right now in year 3 (20 year old) I currently sit at a 68 overall (+12) but just got called up to AAA.

Somehow I can foul away balls close to the plate when I'm in an 0-2 count and work my way up to 3-2 and then I can't foul away the ball anymore. I don't get it. Fortunately I get a lot of XBH in those situations but I just want to draw some walks for a change.

In my 2015 season with the Cardinals I had 500+ ABs and I drew no more than 15 walks, 20 tops.
Sliders lower strike frequency by 1 notch and go from there

First time trying out a RTTS video series. I have been playing this one for a bit now, but decided to start the videos for his Major League debut. I created a Japanese second baseman named Kazuhito Yamazaki who was drafted by the Phillies. He tore through AA and was called up on August 1st of the same year. He made the AA All-Star team and also the Futures Game. He is a plus defender with speed and power. He got off to a slow start to begin the season and then suffered a dislocated shoulder which caused him to miss time on the 60-day DL. He missed the end of April, all of May and the beginning of June. In total he played in 50 games at the AA level before his big league promotion. I play on All-Star difficulty.

The 2015 season is finished for Phillies second baseman Kazuhito Yamazaki. Pretty solid season mixed between AA and MLB. Here are his stats for the 2015 season separated by AA and MLB. Onto 2016 Phillies Spring Training!

Ugh, are you serious? Figure this one out. I'm pitching a whale of a ballgame. One out in the 9th and I've got a shutout going. I've given up just 3 hits (all singles) and one walk. In fact, my pitch count at this point was 89. So the batter drops a drag bunt for a hit and I get pulled.
