Not necessarily. Directional hitting is not the same as guessing the zone the pitch will be in. If you do not move the stick then it is essentially just timing. You have no control over the Plate Coverage Indicator. What your talking about sounds more like Zone hitting.

Yeah, just to follow up because I think I've seen a bit of confusion regarding that distinction. Directional hitting has to do with the direction you want to hit the ball, not where the ball is pitched. Now there is a relation as if you choose to pull a pitch, the camera shifts slightly so you have a better view of the inside corner (I'm assuming the camera only shifts if hitting from a behind the batter view, but I'll find out tonight).

I believe you just press the direction once to establish how you want to try to hit the ball (push, pull, ground, air, or some combination). If you don't pick any direction, then it is essentially the same as timing hitting last year.

One last thing - directional hitting cannot be used with zone. You have to pick one or the other.

Yes. Gameplay Options - Batting and Baserunning - Basic. Camera Shift OFF.

So, what's the difference between the new directional hitting and the timing / zone hitting I've been using for years?

The end result, the way you implement it or both?

I am still confused...Can you still use guess location as well as directional hitting? Or does using directional negate being able to use guess location? What about guess pitch?

I don't have the game myself yet, but I don't see why you couldn't do guess pitch and directional hitting. Remember, they are two very different things. Guess pitch has to do with what kind of pitch the pitcher throws you and where they throw it. Directional hitting has to do with where you as the hitter want to hit the ball (pull, push, flyball, groundball, etc).

I don't have the game myself yet, but I don't see why you couldn't do guess pitch and directional hitting. Remember, they are two very different things. Guess pitch has to do with what kind of pitch the pitcher throws you and where they throw it. Directional hitting has to do with where you as the hitter want to hit the ball (pull, push, flyball, groundball, etc).

Right. What I'm saying is I'm pretty sure those are two entirely separate mechanics. Guess location means you guess before the pitch whether you'll get an outside fastball and you get some sort of feedback possibly if you guess right.

Directional hitting means you choose before you swing which direction you want to hit the ball. I can't think of any reason why you can't do both.

Guess pitch/location seems pretty much unchanged from last year, except that there's a PCI option that I don't think I remember from last year. I don't really use GP much though, so maybe I just forgot.

You still guess by holding down R2 and choosing a pitch/location/both.

Even if it says that, I just tried it for myself with directional and got the crosshair on the pitch's location. It still works.

For guys playing the game (I will be in 2 hours yeah baby!!) are you able to use driectional in real time instead of having it pushed before the pitch.

Can you push the stick in the direction you want while simultaneously pressing the "X" button? Or must you pre load the direction before the pitch. On MVP 2005 you could use directional hitting in real time.

Yes you can use it real-time (tested this by leaving the "PCI" enabled).
I have removed the camera shift and "PCI" (the yellow flash that shows where you are pushing stick), to get that MVP feel back.
