How do you prevent stealing bases?

I don't understand baseball strategy very well.

The CPU doesn't even lead off to give me a warning that they may run like in other baseball games, they just take off when I throw, yet they still make it easily without the lead off.

Also, because of what I said above about the fact that they never lead off, picking off seems like a function that never works and just leads to my pitcher chucking it into the stands.

How do I prevent them from getting free bases on steals all day long?

From what i understand all runners all ready have a default lead off but you will often see them take a extra step.

Just keep an eye on there speed and steal ratings and where would the fun/strategy be if they telegraphed it everytime.

Keep them at the smallest lead off and if i think they may go but don't want to pitch out i throw a fb up and near my catchers glove.

Stepoffs (press L1 after choosing your pitch)

Pickoffs (Hold L2 and press the base to throw to, there are 3 different moves depending on how you press it)

      Pitchouts (L1 + X at pitch selection)

Just throwing fast pitches in general with runners on.

And new this year is the slide step - hold R2 when starting your windup to shorten it at the expense of some pitch performance.

We have more tools than ever this year.
