Re: MLB 15 Franchise Progress Thread

The Marlins are still on a flying start, currently sporting the best record in baseball, so it's hard to say anything about the new offense isn't working.

However, they might have gotten a taste of the issues that can come up when the bottom of the order goes silent at the plate.

In fact, it wasn't even the just the bottom of the order. Everyone from Profar on down did very little.

Chris Davis tried to do it all. He drove in all three runs and smacked his 13th HR in the process in 38 games (he still trails Bryce Harper's 14 HRs). He went 3-for-5 in the game.

He failed to come through in the 9th against Kimbrel, as the Braves won 4-3 to take the series.

Interestingly enough, the Marlins have lost 9 games (29-9), six of them in two series - a 4-game sweep at the hands of the Giants, and this lost series against the Braves.

The Marlins stranded 10 baserunners as no one could give support to Polanco, who's replacing an injured Chris Taylor, and Davis. No one else could come up with a hit to drive in runs.

Clay Huff is might be losing that "magic". He's not had the best start, and he gave up 3 runs on just 4 hits through 7 innings. All the runs and 3 of the hits came in just one inning. Not a bad outing, and one of the better ones for him to start the year, but nothing like the sub-3.00 ERAs he's been posting, at least not yet.

Jacob Turner is also not repeating last year's success thus far.

It's been working because the new offense has been brutally efficient with getting on base, stealing bases, and getting timely hits. That didn't show up in this series with the Braves, just like no one showed up at AT&T Park. The Marlins are literally, 1-6 when the offense doesn't work on all cylinders. Of course, they've been 28-3 when it does - but...are they still just as inconsistent as ever over the long term?

Yelich and Profar are slumping. Taylor is hurt, leaving just Hamilton at the top of the order. Baldwin is feast or famine. Campos will probably cool off. Will be interesting see going forward.

Re: MLB 15 Franchise Progress Thread

I started a franchise with the Reds with a OSFM Post Deadline roster. The Reds went an awful 61-101. The Mets beat the Tigers in the WS. I'm trying to do an organic rebuild. I still have Votto, Frazier, Chapman, Mesoracco, Bruce, Hamilton and Cozart. I didn't do much in the offseason. I let several older pieces of my BP walk in FA. Homer Bailey is back but he lost on opening day to the Diamondbacks 4-2. We beat them in game two, winning 5-1. Mesoraco got hurt in ST,, he'll miss about two months.

Re: MLB 15 Franchise Progress Thread

June has arrived and that means it's draft day.

The Marlins didn't have any particular targets in mind. Instead, they were just looking for good-looking prospects that might rise up through the ranks, something that's been lacking beyond the first couple classes that produced players like SP Damian Boeve, C's Lindasy Robertson and Tommy Cruz, and OF Matt Baldwin.

With other touted names like Tyler Kolek taking their sweet time progressing, many thought the Marlins would target pitching. Well, they did - but the first half of the draft also saw some position players taken by the team.

              1st Round - RHP Lorenzo Serrano, 19
High school pitchers can be a gamble, but the Marlins liked the look of this young hurler from the Dominican Republic. Lorenzo features a rather traditional arsenal - four-seam, two-seam, curve, change - but he gets good movement and changes speeds well. He'll have to learn how to set up hitters and work an at-bat, however, and command is something that will be watched going forward. ETA: 2023, Projection: 2nd-3rd Starter

              Compensation Round - 2B Jay Craft, 21
Craft pretty much checks the boxes for the current philosophy for the Marlins. Projects well defensively? Check. Decent speed that projects higher? Check. Good ability to read pitchers and steal? Check. Decent hitter that will at least make contact? Check. As a bonus, he comes with a reputation for being calm under pressure and has a cannon for an arm. The problem? A bit of an injury risk and his power looks to stay sub-par. He might have to compete with Jurrickson Profar as well. ETA: 2021, Projection: Starting 2B, possible 3B.

              2nd Round - LHP Michael Barnhart, 22
Another rather traditional arm in terms of what he throws - fastball, 12-6 curve, change up. Nothing too exotic, though his curve can have a little screwball action at times. Throws hard and his fastball can have some sink to it as well. The movement on all his pitches is very inconsistent, as is his command of said pitches. Questions remain on how well he'll transition from a thrower to a pitcher, especially since he's not transitioned at 22 years old. ETA: 2026, Projection: 4th Starter

              3rd Round - C Charles Yamazaki, 22
The Marlins have two good catchers at the major league level, but nothing much at all behind them. Yamazaki will hope to change that. He surprised with his speed considering scouts thought he'd be the typical slow-footed runner at the position. Yamazaki has the makings of a solid power stroke while developing enough contact to make it work. However, the Marlins found out why a solid catcher prospect dropped this far...a terrible injury history. Still, if they Marlins can somehow keep him healthy, it could be another win at a position that's short on talent around the league.
ETA: 2022, Projection: Potential starting catcher

              4th Round - RHP Jeff Okada, 18
A young international amateur from Japan is the Marlins 4th round selection. Okada, like most high school-aged arms, is lacking refinement, but there's some promise here. He displays rather consistent movement, especially for his age, and can mix his speeds. Command shows promise, but he'll have to learn how to locate in the zone, not just avoiding walks by throwing it over the center of the plate. Could surprise or completely fall apart. ETA: 2026, Projection: 5th starter/long reliever

              5th Round - RHP Ken Cowan, 21
Ken worked as a closer in college and will likely be a reliever in the pro ranks. He shows decent pitches, all of them being about equal solid, which is a plus since he can mix more effectively at any count. The biggest problem for Ken is that his arm tends to drop too much, negating a lot of the break on his pitches. The other problem is he starts overthrowing when things go against him, compounding his problems. Still could be a serviceable reliever if he can figure it out. ETA: 2030, Projection: Mid Reliever

              6th Round - LHP Sam Bowman, 22
Some think the Marlins might have gotten a dark horse here in the 6th round. Bowman doesn't stand out much on paper, but he has few gaping holes. The biggest is his walk ratio was too high, but there's some relievers in the majors with nasty stuff and are "effectively wild", so that alone may not stop Bowman from rising. Bowman will need to figure out an out pitch and make steady improvements. Scouts are quite mixed on him, both inside and outside the organization. ETA: 2022, Projection: Mid Reliever

Re: MLB 15 Franchise Progress Thread

This is looking like another summer swoon for the Marlins. June has been rough, and the team has lost seven of their last 10. They still have a good-sized lead, but this is cause for concern.

The team has been finding ways to lose lately. Extra innings losses, blowing leads, Clay Huff continues to struggle, Chris Davis has gone cold, some atrocious defense despite the quickness and athleticism on the field, and maybe even just some plain bad luck in there too.

Fortunately, the team is healthy after welcoming back Ben Revere to the outfield and regaining the services of Chris Taylor at short.

One trend that's continued has been the lack of strikeouts from the pitchers. The team is 24th in strikeouts, and the coaching staff is at a loss for why the strikeouts have disappeared. Clay Huff and Moses Bartlett aren't known for strikeouts, but these two were on the staff last year and the team was near the top in pitching K's.

Defensively, the outfield in particular has made some bonehead plays in this latest stretch. Ben Revere has made some not-so-smart decisions in right field, one of which lead to an in-the-park HR at Coors Field. Another time, he greatly misjudged a fly ball and had to go run it down. Yelich, who's having a struggle in general this year, has made lolipop throws despite a good arm. At least Hamilton, and, when he's had playing time, Baldwin have been rock solid in CF. Eric Young, Jr. has also been solid.

Re: MLB 15 Franchise Progress Thread

                  And....I jinxed it.

Jose Fernandez went down, again, with a pulled shoulder muscle. He'll be out for around 2 weeks as he's halfway through his rehab timetable. Chris Owings went down with a fractured wrist and will miss up to 8 more weeks. This is a blow to the depth, so if anything should happen to Taylor, Profar, or Polanco, it could get dicey in the middle infield.

The injuries highlight what's been a growing problem for the Marlins the last couple seasons, a top-and-bottom heavy roster with precious little "workman" players in the middle that can fill in for injuries. Bets made on prospects that would rise to this "middle of the roster" level have not gone as planned. Players like SPs Tyler Kolek, Jeff Bolton, and Will Bullock, infielders Colin Moran and Freddie Foss have progressed much more slowly than anticipated.

Clay Huff is the only one that's bucked the recent trend, even though most still consider him a disappointment as scouts projected him to be similar to Tom Glavine or Greg Maddux. Instead, he's more like Jaime Moyer.

Compounding the issue are unexpected collapses like what happened to Hechavarria - he was one of those middle-of-the-roster players...until he completely fell apart in what most consider the prime of a players career. Instead, Hechavarria has lost much of his defensive acumen, most of his speed, and what passed for an offense. The Marlins haven't lost all hope on Hech just yet...but the clock is ticking.

More injuries could force the Marlins to either force-feed prospects that might be "kind of ready" and take the risks that entails, or trade those same prospects for mid-level players just to round out the roster. Rotation injuries in particular since an injured rotation is likely what cost them in the NLCS. That's a sore spot for the fans and front office still.

With the Marlins expecting nothing short of the World Series appearance after falling in the NLCS the last two seasons, patience will not be in abundance...which might make problems worse.

Re: MLB 15 Franchise Progress Thread

Just finished up April. My Yankees are 17-7 and 2.5 games up in the East. I'm getting great production out of my pitching staff. Betances just had a rough outing in Boston. Gave up a few runs in the 8th but overall the closers have been lights out.

The Zobrist trade has paid off. The only move I'm still studying is moving McCann. Haven't made a move yet but I'm looking at Dioner Navarro. He's the back-up catcher in Toronto AND he's a former Yankee. So I might bring him back into the family as my starting catcher. I'll scan through the NL catcher before I make a move though.

I've started a new franchise with the Mets and I intend to play every game. So far, I'm 2-0 in a road series at the Nationals to start the year. I'm using the OSFM Revision Rosters, I believe version 1.3, and I am using Armor & Sword's sliders.

Game one: The Dark Knight rises. Harvey pitched 6 shutout innings in his return from TJ. 200 million dollar man Max Scherzer was opposing Harvey on the mound. Scherzer gave up one run, a solo shot to Lucas Duda, but it was enough. A solo shot from David Wright gave the Mets a 2-0 lead. The Nats scored one in the ninth but Familia shut them down otherwise. Mets win 2-1.

Game 2: deGrom vs. Strasburg: deGrom labored early on, and his day was thus cut short after five innings. He needed thirty pitches to get through the first inning. He gave up several walks but he struck out 6. deGrom allowed just one run in his long first inning but he calmed down after that. Dario Alvarez pitched three innings in relief while Carlos Torres pitched the ninth. Cuddyer hit his first homer as a Met, Wright had three RBIs and it was a good day for the offense as the Mets won 6-1.

Game 3: Steven Matz made the team after an excellent ST thag saw him pitch to a sub-one ERA. The rookie will pitch in the finale of this series.

Trade deadline came and went. Surprised that not one trade was done at the deadline. However, a number of teams have placed players on waivers. Going into August, I lost 2 of 3 to the Nats. Have the first-place Marlins next.

Is there any way to put a rookie on the team? Like i put myself? Then player lock and i also do thr trades and manage the team?

The ALCS is underway as my Yankees take on the Indians. Who would seize control of the series early on?

Matt Baldwin's days as a Marlin might be numbered.

The Marlins probably won't deal him even with the trading deadline approaching, especially not with Yelich out for 4-8 weeks still. However, the offseason might be where the team explores options regarding Baldwin.

The problem is that he's not improved his hitting at all, especially his swing. It's still a long, loopy swing that can generate power but has a lot of holes.

After a promising rooking campaign where he batted .267 and hit 16 HR, he had an abysmal sophomore season where he didn't even make the Mendoza line and hit just 9 HR in 180 AB. This year, he's be hovering in the low .200s through 180 ABs with 9 HR again.

The Marlins don't want to part with one of the fastest players in the game. When it works out for Baldwin, he's electric on the field hustling out triples, stealing bases, and being a major nuisance. As much as he's struggled, he has 6 triples, 7 doubles, 9 HR (52% of his hits have gone for extra bases), and is 16-for-17 in SB attempts.

But a .290 OBP and striking out 27% of the time stand out in the opposite direction. The strikeout rate is higher than even Chris Davis' 22%...without the threat of hitting 45+ HR or a .370+ OBP.

The logistics are there to keep Baldwin off the field. Profar could move to LF with no problem. Campos could move to 2B and keep one of the team's few slow players on the infield where that doesn't matter. David Sohn, who is considered ready by just about everyone could take 3B. 21-year-old slugger Stan Brito could as well, though he needs more refinement.

Baldwin will have at least 4 more weeks to show he's making progress, barring a surprise move. If he looks like he's turning the corner, everything could become moot. Otherwise, a return trip to AAA might be the most he could hope for as part of the Marlins organization.
