I try putting them on the 40 man roster, but it says "Only major league free agents may be added to the 40-man roster between november 20th and the rule 5 draft in december". What am I doing wrong?

To protect a player from the Rule 5 draft, you must add him to the 40-man roster before the deadline date, which seems to be November 20th in this case. Any player not on your 40-man, and meets the rest of the requirements for Rule 5 eligibility (see Transaction Handbook in Franchise), is eligible for the Rule 5 draft. After that deadline, only FA additions, or players acquired via trade/waivers are eligible for the 40-man. You can add any player to the 40 any time after the rule 5 draft is complete.

You can also look at the player's card, and it will specifically say whether or not he is rule 5 eligible. If he's not, and you don't plan on bringing him up to the majors that season, there's no reason to waste a 40 man spot on him. He's safe.

Yes every offseason I look at the player card and try to move players that I do not want on my 40 man and do not feel will make it through the draft. The player card appears to be the only real way to do it because the rules really do not follow along the CBA.
