The Regression of MLB 15 The Show

First thing i'd like to say is i'm a huge fan of MLB the show and have been since I purchased the first one made for the PS3. Every year i've enjoyed the enhancements (even the small ones). I've always appreciated Sony realizing they had a solid product and building on it, rather than drastically changing it just because like many games do. It's a solid product and continues to be a solid product.

Now that that's out of the way, here is why I believe MLB 15 The Show is actually worse than MLB 14 The Show.

    1. Fundamentals.. The once solid franchise has disappointed me this year. This is the first time out of the box where I feel it is an incomplete game. Don't get me wrong, previous years had its flaws (as with every game). This iteration however has flaws that drastically change the outcome of the game. For instance the strike zone. Before the strike zone was simple. Sometimes the umps blew strikes and balls, but mostly you knew what was a ball and what was a strike. This year the strike zone is chaotic. It feels almost every pitch that is not centered can be called either way. It seems no umpire shows any consistency in how they call a game, it feels hit or miss, constantly. This has caused me to have higher score games (playing on HOF, both pitching and hitting, no GP, Zone and meter). Which doesn't accurately reflect the state of the game today.

    2. Outfielders. The new outfield mechanic is awful. There really is no other way I can put it. It is terrible. Giving me a circle to indicate where the ball is and telling me "well the ball might not actually be there" might be the dumbest thing i've ever heard. Now when I started fielding pop ups like someone with his thumbs cutoff I thought, well it's gotta be me. So I looked at people play on twitch. I realized it wasn't me. The guy fielding might've been worst than I was. Every pop up is an adventure, no matter how routine. It's to the point where i'm scared when the ball get's hit in the air. Solid outfielders like McCutchen and Trout look plain bad out there.

    3. Animations. They are great, they add to the character of the game. However, when a pop fly to shallow right results in a runner from first tagging up there is a problem. Especially when the throw to the cutoff man was preloaded well before the ball was caught. Animations should enhance your experience, not hamper it.

    4. Features. This might be my biggest gripe. They stripped one of my most loved feature in the show. A feature that has been there for YEARS. The ability to see exactly how you hit the ball after you hit it. Why was this taken out. This was a great indicator on why you did what you did. If you were early, if you were late, if the PCI was in the correct location (the most important piece IMO). I could use that to adjust throughout the game. They've completely stripped it. Now you can only find out the first time through the order, or when that hitter comes up next. No offense, by the time he comes up next I really couldn't care less. Hell i've probably forgotten.

    5. The amount of balls that are in the field of play (whether fair or foul). No matter what stadium. It's well off. I watch a baseball game and you see players foul off pitch after pitch. In this I may foul off 2 pitches successfully, the third is a pop out foul to the catcher, or anywhere in foul territory.

    6. Glitches. This I won't count too much. Again every game has glitches. But I hope they are fixed by patch in the near future.

For the people who feel this is tl:dr I do like the game. It's a fairly good game and they have improved in some areas. But I feel the core aspect of the game has taken a step back. Something i'm not sure i've ever seen in a show game. I know some of the stuff I listed can be changed with sliders, but even with slider modification they are still a problem. Let's hope a patch clears up some of this stuff.

The only one I agree with there is 4, but it is only a minor gripe. The rest, I have no idea what you are talking about, I have not seen any of these things nor have I seen anyone else complain about them.

I swear that sometimes people are playing a different game.

So you've never been called out on strikes on a 1-1 count like what happened to me yesterday? Because I'm pretty sure I'm playing the same game everyone else is. Not to mention there are quite a few videos on YouTube with the glitches and problems of this game. But if your copy is good maybe I need to get it from your source.

        1. "Incomplete game." I disagree with this 100%. As for the strike zone, it seems pretty consistent with real life. It feels much smaller than last year but not to the point where my games are always high-scoring. "It feels almost every pitch that is not centered can be called either way." What is wrong with that? That's realism as Umps often miss calls. Not sure how any of that qualifies as an "incomplete game."

        2. I have no idea what you or the twitch streamers you watched are doing defensively. I have absolutely no issues catching fly balls. And the ball always lands where it says it's going to land, so I'm not sure what you mean by "well the ball might not actually be there." I really love the new mechanic. I don't get sucked into slow animations, and I have to play just a little more attention so I don't miss it.

        3. Animations are very well done this year, especially with fielding IMO. I've hardly had any issues with slow animations causing CPU runners to get an extra base. In previous iterations, this was a much larger problem (fielders pushing into walls for 5 seconds instead of making a quick throw home). So there's only been 1 or 2 instances when I've given up an extra base of a slow animation.

        4. I'm not sure whether I like that they didn't cut away from the catcher view immediately this year. But this is a very reasonable complaint. It usually sucks to see something taken out of the game.

        5. I agree with this one as well. Watching a lot of games since Opening Day this year, I've seen a ton of foul balls. O's fans know all too well that our Starting pitchers have a lot of short outings as a result of the opposing batters hitting foul ball after foul ball against them. Foul balls that don't result in outs are not prevalent enough this year.

        6. I'm pretty sure they're patching the major ones. After that, there won't be any issues with that aspect of the game.

You said you feel the core aspect of the game has taken a step back. I cannot disagree more! This has been one of the biggest jumps from one year to the next IMO. Fielding is incredible this year. Batting and pitching already felt near perfect, but fielding lagged behind. Now it is closer to perfect.

Yeah, I'm not seeing too many of these. Maybe the outfield stuff is relevant, but for me it seems as if I see that in online modes more than anything. I can be right under a ball and the outfielder moves too far to the left or right and lunges for the miss.

This probably could be put in the impressions thread, and if you spot any glitches those should be put in that thread as well. They do look at the stuff.

I like #1. To me that is how every game is called. Umps strike zones change all the time. Hitting the corners is always hit or miss when it is left to the ump calling it a strike or not. I think this game hits spot on on how a umps strike zone changes consistently.

this thread title is severely misleading.

In response to #4, its still there, what you're asking for, its just changed.

I agree on #4. I liked the old system much better. The new one disappears too fast.

I have been frustrated by fielding errors too, I'm considering turning the slider down a notch or two. I've seen more balls thrown from second, way above first, into the crowd than I ever saw last year.
