    Speed?

Why are most of the speed rating so low for players?
For example Mccutchen is at 74..we all know he is faster. and many more.
Any other suggestions on whose speed to upgrade?

I think they might have changed the speed ratings a year or so ago, and did some under the hood tweaking. That way it gives a big gap from the elite speed, like Billy Hamilton, to guys like Cutch who are just fast. I have seen and even stolen bases with guys that aren't very fast. Im a little surprised Cutch wouldn't be in the 80's in speed rating though.

        Re: Speed?

I really don't think Cutch being in the 70s is a big deal. I stole a base with Gattis and Freeman and they're slow as molasses. I think it's more of a product of thinking upper 80 and 90s are elite. Maybe in this category the differential isn't really all that much. There's countless people whose stolen base rating is far lower than any other category range, and the balance is still just right. I would say speed probably operates on a lower differential than other categories.

          Faster than speeding bullet?

I'd for sure bump him a decimal point or two now that he doesn't have to drag that mop around.

            Re: Speed?

back on the old 05-08 versions on PS3. When you would look at player cards, anything under 60 attribute was an F, 60-69 was a D, 70-79 was a C, 80-89 was a B and 90 and up was an A. (if I recall)

Based off of that, A would be anything out of this world, B would be Elite, C would be average to above average, while D and lower was Below average. I have no problem with guys with his speed being in the C range. In my opinion, only pure burners should be 80 and up, and guys like Gordon, Trout, and Hamilton should be the only ones in the 90s. Few others I have missed.

I've definitely stolen bases with Aoki (67spd?) and Pence (not sure I believe 50 something)

I play small ball to the extreme so speed is a must. Bunts for hits are common place in my chise. Using my Astros I have Altuve, Cain, and Dyson( yes both from KC) bunt for hits. Bases loaded for my #4 hitter. No outs. Love it.

Dyson kills me tho. Springer is a solid RF with A potential. I blew up my roster. My new OF is Heyward(from STL), Cain(from KC), and Springer/Dyson....

                      Re: Speed?

I assume it's probably the same this year, but last year the average speed was in the low 50's, so a rating of 74 is above average.

Players in the seventies are referred to in-game as having good speed, and typically will beat out slow rollers and double plays.

Add me to the camp that thinks with the new speed paradigm that 74 speed is the same as "plus speed". Does he not have plus speed? I've never thought of it as plus-plus.

Yeah I was gonna say Ian Kinsler (63?) is not slow and I've stolen 5 or 6 bases with him at least. It would seem anything over 60 is pretty fast.

As for McCutchen, FanGraphs has a speed rating that uses various determining factors like stolen bases and attempted steals which breaks down like this:

McCutchen scores a 6.1 for his career, typically scores around 5.5, and as low as 3.4.

Peter Bourjos should be at 97 or 98 for speed. He's definitely one of the top 10 fastest players in the majors
