    Thoughts on Classic Pitching

Hey guys, for years I've been a meter pitching guy. But I've seen this year that a lot of people use classic pitching. My thoughts on it have always been that it may be more "sim" but it takes the skill out of the pitching aspect of the game because the user has no say on whether or not the ball hits its desired spot. So I'm creating this thread to try and gain insight. Am I missing something? Why do people enjoy this way of playing as opposed to meter or pure analog, pulse etc. I just want to hear all sides so I can decide if I want to try it or not. Thanks!

I was a fan of the High Heat series that was shelved in the early 2000's.
Classic pitching works just like that series.
It may take out the 'skill' as far as timing the meter but there are different skills involved.
The main part of classic pitching is the mental part of changing speeds and locations. How to set up the different hitters to keep the ball off of the barrel of their bat. Also some skill when trying to paint the corners in how much do you move the aim stick ( Left stick) The count and game situation will determine how greedy you can get on going for the corners. And, you have the added factor of the ball isn't always going to go exactly where you aim it. The individual pitcher ratings factor in. And lastly, how long you press button to get extra "stuff" on the pitch will affect control over life on the pitch.

If you really want to get informed on classic pitching you should talk to Armor & Swords. He's the resident expert around here on classic pitching.

Hmm this thread made me wanna try it. I'm always a meter guy, but not enjoying it as much. Might deff try classic as I always prefer ratings over skill.

I like classic pitching a lot because it seems to be based more on player ratings than other types of pitching. I mainly play franchise mode and I like that the higher rated players I've worked hard to trade for or draft or develop are better than the lower rated ones.

One other aspect of classic pitching to make it interesting, command of all of your pitches is not equal. And, the command of each respective pitch type fluctuates during a game. You get a bar graph reading so you know what level each pitch is currently working. Makes you "work with what you got" that day. In that aspect it is like real pitching.

I like the fact that you can't just throw any pitch any time. What I mean is, sometimes your pitcher doesn't have a curveball that is working that day. Maybe he is bouncing them in front of the plate everytime, or he's leaving them hanging, and that's worse.

You can also control the speed of those pitches to a degree. I use the Mets, when I pitch with Harvey I tap the button and get a 93-94 mph fastball. I hold the button for a couple of seconds and I get a 97-98 mph fastball, but....I sacrifice accuracy for the extra speed.

That's just a couple reasons I like it. Someone else mentioned talking to Armor & Swords about it, and I second that. I use his sliders for this game, with a couple tweaks I made for the way I play.

You guys have trouble throwing balls when you want to? On 0-2 counts ill attempt to throw a fb for instance outside and if ends up in fhe middle.

Sometimes, yes. Especially when I try and throw a FB out of the zone high but over the middle of the plate on 0-2 count. It will often catch the strike zone and be a good pitch to hit.
It's not as hard to bounce a breaking ball in the dirt or throw any pitch off of the plate outside.

I never aim outside the strike zone, except on high fastballs. Any other pitch and I am trying to hit the corner or keep it down.

There is a long thread on Classic pitching in the sliders forum, I believe.

I prefer it because it takes my stick skills out of the equation and relies on the pitcher's ratings. I have HUM control and consistency down to 1 on my sliders and I probably average 2-4 walks per game, depending on the quality of pitcher

I'm using classic pitching in franchise more this year than ever before. (Had been using mostly Analog the past couple years). One thing I find that I don't like is Classic pitching combined with Quick Counts is a recipe for disaster. Too many walks even for guys who shouldn't be walking many. When Quick Counts already starts the Human pitcher/CPU batter with too many 3 ball counts as it is, combine that with classic pitching and you pretty much just have to try and groove one down the middle to avoid walking 5-6 guys a game. And by grooving one, you have too many hits. Trying to hit a corner with 3 balls in the count with classic pitching results in a walk 2/3 times for me.Especially once you go to your bullpen, classic pitching with quick counts becomes quite frustrating.

I'm debating if I want to go back to Analog or turn off quick counts. I was hoping to play all 162 games in a franchise this year, and quick counts makes that more possible.
