Re: How to use defensive shifts effectively offline and online

Late in a game I will change to a no-doubles defense. The other two that I use is; when I don't want the runner to be held at a base, and when I know that the pitcher is going to put down a sacrifice bunt. For the second I usually bring in the 1st baseman for the bunt and not hold on the runner. It's a chance that I am willing to take so that I can throw out the guy at 2nd and force that pitcher to run the bases.

I've lost a number of no-hit bids simply because of neglecting defensive shifts. I'm sure this happens A LOT in real life baseball. Teams like Pittsburgh have thrived recently because they do a ton of intelligent defensive shifting...yes, they have some great talent too

Something i just noticed and maybe it was just a one time occurence but i'm playing against the Padres and Alonso hits a two-out single. I go into the menu to make my shifts for the next batter and i notice that its automatically set to Hold The Runner at First. It's two outs and Alonso's speed rating is 44 so i individually change my 1B to play normal depth. In other words DONT hold the runner yet my change never made any difference. My 1B stayed holding the runner the whole at-bat despite me going in and doing it like 10 times and properly saving my changes each time. This happen to anyone else?

One thing that frustrates me about shifts is when runners are on base. It seems difficult to put the individual infielders where you would like. Has anyone figured out a way to change this?

You can change each individual position to whatever depth or shift you like. I often do this for speedsters like Billy hamilton shift left or right at double play or halfway depth because of the speed. You can do this for each of his at bats and change it any any time. I'm not sure if that answers your question.

I've also had several instances where the shift has cost me.

Except for the fact that the game forces you to the hold the runner even when you change it. It totally ignores your manual placement of the 1B or 2B.

This is the most annoying part. Against left handers with runner on 1st, I would like to put 3 infielders to the right of 2nd base. But the game forces me to keep the SS in his normal position, no matter where I try to put him, he doesn't move.

This needs to be fixed in 16

In offline I don't think the spray charts even make any difference. I used to play infield shifts but have stopped because the spray charts don't seem to actually reflect where the CPU hits balls.

In the menu you can set up a defense that will always be applied throughout the game IF AND ONLY IF you have your defense set to MANUAL rather than AUTO in options. Am I correct?

I wish this was better documented. The main menu probably should have the "ALWAYS" options disabled if you have AUTO defense turned on.
