    Manage mode

So I'm sitting in my recliner keeping score of the Mets / Giants game and I was thinking to myself what I would do different during the game. I started to think about the manage mode. For those that play it, do you keep a scorecard during the game?

I did it for a couple games today and I thought it was great. Made me feel more into the manager mode.

I keep a spreadsheet on Google Drive. Since I adjust my lineups, guys tired etc, I have a core lineup I keep, a preferred rotation, my 40 man roster and who is where along with notes next to them. Notes for if I am thinking of bringing up a milb player. When I play, I keep track of the other teams players and if they are hot/cold against a certain pitcher. Which of my players do better/worse against teams/pitchers. Things like that. I try to make the most out of MoM. I feel it makes up for not being able to keep up and actually play franchise anymore.

I imagine that setup works pretty smooth, how long did it take you to set all that up and getting it running? I think my biggest obstacle in doing something like that is looking at the amount of information available and seeing it as such a time consuming task.

It actually, just kind of happened. I kept messing with my lineup and never had a solid one to go back to, so I had my laptop on next me (watching real mlb game while I played) and after, I just went into Drive and made a lineup. Well then I was like, let me do the same for my Pitching Rotation. Then, I got into a spot, where I wanted to send this player down bc he just wasnt doing it anymore, and a younger prospect was showing promise...... that led to who is on my 40 man and so forth. So even if I am watching real mlb, and I have a thought or an idea to try, I can just fire the laptop up and look. It really isnt all that time consuming. Well to me it doesnt feel to be. Its apart of what I love doing in the game. Most of it I really look at and think is when Im not actually on the game. Some people read books, watch movies, I, I look at my notes, and make notes, and ideas, and plans. Its just something fun to me to do.

How do you guys keep manager mode interesting, for those that play it. I have tried it a few times and just lose interest because especially early in the games it didnt seem like I was doing much other than watching the game. I think the spreadsheets etc would be good after/before games looking at the stats laid out like that. But don't you get the "itch" to join in the game when you are just sitting watching. Dont mean this to sound critical at all of those that play this mode. I would like to get into it because frankly I stink at this game lol.

I used to coach a traveling mens team in Spain and we would go all around playing tournaments in Ireland, Portugal, and we were in a local league in Southern Spain. Playing MoM for me brings me back to those days of keeping track of pitch counts, strategies, and setting up hit-n-runs. Little things like that. Plus the dugout view is a nice perspective.

I've only played 3 games this year in that mode but it I still found it pretty cool. Plus it's a nice little break every now and then between my franchise games. I haven't tried to play it as an everyday thing yet, but I'm not going to say it won't happen.

I manager every game, every inning and I never lose interest. What I find myself doing is yelling at a guy that swings at a ball out of the strike zone, or taking a ball that should have been hit. Then telling myself, next game he won't start. I also keep checking the other teams lineup looking who they got coming in, batting, etc, what they are doing against left/right pitching. I tried the spread sheet thing before, but just took up took much time, when I can get two/three game in. I have started keeping up with the players stats/rating on a year end biases to see if they are dropping.

I also stink at the game, but really enjoy the game because of this mode.

                    Re: Manage mode

I do a few things to keep it interesting.

I've printed out scorecards from online and keep score.
I was using a dry erase board(with scorecard overlay on it)...but it would get messy sometimes.
I also use different cameras.....dugout.....broadcast and press box mostly.
I call pitches quite a bit...and this is where I think they need a little work to strengthen up the mode(for more "playability")....a quicker was to call pitches and to increase the access to calling pitches by allowing us to call actual pitches as well as the already available zone.
It's a bit cumbersome now(having to go to the pitcher screen and choosing one of the options)
Simply allowing us to use the buttons to call the pitch and the L stick to choose the zone(and give us the option to use this on the front end) would be nice.
I also keep a book on my players(a spreadsheet actually) with the date...opponent...records...etc and not both good and poor performances and I name my own player of the game and goat.
It's a good way to go back and look to make roster and signing(end of year) moves.

For me...this mode is the only true way to get realistic results....I just don't hit well and I pitch too well.
If I actually played games....even with the different level choices...I'd have a team of Mario Mendoza's and a team of Cy Youngs.

                    M.K.

                      LOL

Question, how do you do a mound visit? I tried different options and all I can get is the bullpen option. I also like the idea of keeping the scorecard but I use Pointstreak K-ForCE PC Edition. It's only a free trial but I can take a snip of the card and save it as game #1, 2, ect... It's a pretty simple program to use, the only drawback is it won't let you put in pitcher info. (well I haven't been able to do it yet)

Here is a snip from one of my games. I like that you can see the pitch count to track how many batters your pitcher is getting ahead or behind on and how many deep counts he is getting into. Then I just save the image to a season file. I think the program is $50 and it would keep season stats for batters and pitchers, but I use the trial version and you can't save.

Also my two cents on Mom.I love the strategy aspects of managing a club, also being a micro-manager i call most pitches.I understand why alot find it boring but im not much of button masher just never had the talent I love coaching and managing on games though.

You could buy a book of score cards/sheet for about $15 about 30-40 sheets. This is what I did, then just copy about 100 more at UPS store for $10. I got mine in a blinder for every game. (Sort of a stats nut I guess)
