Do batters "learn" during a game?
Does seeing a larger number of pitches from one pitcher make a batter better offensively? Or is each at bat a new experience.Tags: None -

Re: Do batters "learn" during a game?
They do learn your pitches and tendencies as a game goes on. I also believe the higher the difficulty level, the quicker they learn. I might be wrong on that last tidbit though.“No one is more hated than he who speaks the truth.”

In addition to "learning," the pitcher's attributes get some minor reduction when his energy gets lower... once he is "tired" then his attributes get a large hit. So basically it's a combination of learning and also attribute reduction.Comment

I ask this because what a few ML teams are doing this year- automatically taking out their starters once they turn the line-up over twice. The average starter this year has 85 pitches.Comment

Re: Do batters "learn" during a game?
Yes... The data have shown that each cycle in batting order, the batting average against noticeably increases. Learning is part of it, but it is also getting used to and the pitcher tiring as well. I think they are being simulated by the game to varying extent already.Comment

Re: Do batters "learn" during a game?
What about CPU pitchers during a game? Let's say Kershaw is pitching against me and strikes me out as Jason Heyward. Will Kershaw pitch in a similar way when Heyward comes back around? Or does a pitcher treat each batter as if it's the first time he's seen said batter?Comment

Re: Do batters "learn" during a game?
The CPU picks up on all your tendencies whether you are hitting or pitching. If you take the first pitch every time, the ai will notice and start throwing more strikes. If you're prone to chasing low breaking balls with 2 strikes, expect them to come more and more often. If you cant sit back on outside pitches, get used to rolling over all game. And again, I believe the ai picks up quicker on higher difficulties.“No one is more hated than he who speaks the truth.”

I always thought it would be cool if it remembered each individual batter's previous at-bats, but that would require 9 times the work and memory.Comment

Re: Do batters "learn" during a game?
Doesn't it already save where the pitches were in that player's last AB? Also, if I view the Batter/Pitcher Analysis, it has every pitch thrown by the pitcher or to the hitter, including result, batted ball type, etc.
Seems like the data is already there. Just a matter of getting the AI to "read" it and adjust its tactics accordingly?"Some people call it butterflies, but to him, it probably feels like pterodactyls in his stomach." --Plesac in MLB18Comment

Re: Do batters "learn" during a game?
They do not pitch you the same way everytime. I had an AB with Braun where I was thrown 4 out of 5 pitches as breaking balls down and away. The next AB 3 out of the pitches were fastballs in, with the lone offspeed pitch away resulting in a K. I noticed most pitchers were jamming Gomez with fastballs in on the first pitch so on one AB i held my directional to pull and set my thumb on power swing....the rest is history. Its tough to tell how CPU pitchers elect to attack certain hitters unless ur paying attention to every hitter all the time.Comment

Re: Do batters "learn" during a game?
It reads by situations as well. Example: runner on first, 1 out, batter is a right. The situation says to throw sinking pitches inside to get a double play without exposing the hole with the 1B holding the runner. BUT, after I give a power swing and attack that pitch I'm looking for, it starts to throw hard pitches high and away trying to get to two strikes or a pop up instead of the double play. The CPU adjusted against me. Meanwhile, the CPU hitters adjust against my pitching as well.
It seems to start every game as a clean slate. I wish that it didn't do that. Maybe each new series but even then, teams are aware of all the other team's tendencies so I say carry it over.Comment

See I still pitchers way too effective after being tired.Comment

I play with Classic Pitching and Timing hitting (so does the cpu) and I can tell you, as I am one of those who likes to play every game during my franchise, that the CPU Pitchers and Hitters do remember Human Tendencies with certain players. Especially those within your division. Just exactly like WE remember pitchers pitches and how to pitch to certain hitters."It Makes Sense If You Don't Think About it"

Re: Do batters "learn" during a game?
I personally don't have issues hitting against exhausted pitchers, except knuckleballers (their movement doesn't decline as much, and knuckleball in the game is way too easy to command within a strike zone, even when they are out of energy... so it doesn't take much strategy to use them effectively; the reason why so many online guys use them). My experience playing against online guys are that some do not take advantage of low-energy pitchers because they are often too impatient to be selective...
I am still not totally sure of the best way of the concept of "energy" affecting pitchers. Currently, low energy pitchers do decline in terms of pitch speed, command, and a few key attributes (which you can see in the PCI size increase when they tire)... but in real life pitchers don't uniformly respond to the loss of energy (i.e., throwing more pitches).

I for one do wish to see a more variety in A.I. tendencies, but one thing that is really different in the game when user controls players is that each of us controls all players, effectively one AI controlling the whole team, but in real life each player has its own tendency, effectively having different AIs. What does it mean to "learn" when each player has like only 4 at-bats each game? Things can be complicated like that.Comment
