Question about a message which sometimes appears

Prior to a game when setting the lineup I sometimes get this message for my catcher.

"____ seems to be struggling behind the plate this season. Maybe giving him the day off will get him back in the groove".

The catcher isn't fatigued to the point where he needs a day off.

Does any know what the impact of that message is? I usually ignore it and use my starting catcher anyway since my backup isn't very good.

Is it AT the plate...or behind the plate?
It could just be in reference to his batting avg.

      It is behind the plate.

I've had this a couple of times. I usually abide and put in my backup, thinking that maybe my pitcher would do better, but I've never really noticed a significant difference.

If I was going to hazard a guess I'd agree with you it might cause the pitcher's attributes to drop a little kind of like a guy who is cold but with Atlanta the only catcher I have who can hit a lick is Pierzynski so I let him play.

I might start doing the same as you.

Are you 100% sure it's not "at the plate"? I've gotten an almost identical message (in your inbox?) about players that are struggling offensively for extended periods of time.

I should have been more specific in my op. Prior to the game when you set your lineup you sometimes get messages advising you to do certain things with your players. Sometimes it tells you a player needs rest. Other times it tells you a players isn't hitting rhp or lhp well. With the catcher only, no other position, it sometimes give you the behind the plate message.

Another version of the same message is "____ (in this case A J Pierzynski) has had some troubles behind the dish this season. You should consider giving him the day off." I haven't tracked every instance but in this case he has the cold icon next to his name.

Just wondering exactly what this indicates.

Re: Question about a message which sometimes appears

I've never seen this message. I've had the "at the plate" message several times with struggling hitters but never this one. That's actually really cool as it brings the extra importance and emphasis teams put on catching, framing, etc. into the game.

I wonder if it is tied into cold streaks or if it might pop up if you are continuingly starting a low defensive rated catcher.

When you see this message, has your pitching staff been getting knocked around when a particular catcher is behind the plate? If so, maybe that is the reason for the message?

I haven't seen this message either.

My team pitching isn't good, 27th in team ERA, 30th in blown saves - 25 blown saves.

I do play manage mode but for that to be true the catcher would then have an impact on the pitchers. This would be new and interesting information if it is the case and it is partly why I asked the question. Is it a meaningless message which means nothing or it an indicator of catcher defensive attributes having an impact on pitcher performance?

I don't know, but i was asking because I haven't seen the message myself.

Is this particular catcher struggling with passed balls?

It is A J Pierzynski and I don't think the ability to find passed ball totals is searchable in the game but he only has 2 errors.

If you want to hear something funny, I was trying to leave Bethancourt in AAA and let him develop but I decided to call him up for his defense which is better than Pierzynski. Very first at bat he hit a double and got injured sliding into second base - out for the season.

Hmmm...I'm baffled as to what it may be. If I see it I can gauge it against how that particular catcher is performing and share notes. But thus far I haven't seen it, or at least haven't paid attention to it.

thats not funny, but it is funny. Thats baseball at its finest isn't it?

Something just struck me - I play all my games. The only time I sim is spring training and at the end of the season if my team is eliminated from the playoffs.

Since the sim engine and game engine are two separate entities I wonder if the fact I play all my games is causing my catcher to have more defensive problems than people who sim some of their games.

For those who have not seen this message - do you play all your games or sim some of them?

I play 1 sim between 3 and 5 games. When I saw the message, I had a younger catcher playing. He was solid defensively, but not great (ratings in the low 70s). He wasn't struggling at the plate. This was also in '14. I haven't seen it yet in '15.

I thought it was really cool, actually, and enjoyed the possible added layer of strategy, even if it didn't make a difference in the game.
