Ellsbury isn't even in consideration for top 5 let alone top 3. He's an aging player whose value originates from speed and defense. 2 things which do not age well and even if he somehow manages to duplicate his 2014 season that still isn't enough to say he's better than Trout, Pollock, Mccutchen, Kiermaier or Cain.

Tanaka is fine at 89. He had a relatively poor season and who knows how he pitches given that he opted to not have TJ surgery and you can tell that it's affecting his performance. WHIP is a useless stat unless you're playing fantasy baseball.

I hope Kyle Hendricks gets the bump up he deserves. He needs to be around an 83 or 84 overall.

29th in the league in K/9
      27th in BB/9
      16th in GB%

Also I think it's ridiculous that Sonny Gray can be a 92 when he has such middle of the pack peripherals.

Can't believe we are bringing up ERA to talk about how good a pitcher is

smh. Kyle Schwarber right now is a better player than Werth and K. Davis. How he isn't top 10 at his position is beyond me.

Too small of a sample size and his numbers against LHPs were pretty poor. He actually did OK in LF, minus the NLCS anyway.

That is true what you say about Schwarber. How do you feel about Correa and Lindor's rating? Remember Joey Gallo? He hit a few HRs and the roster update had his potential at 99.

Yep because apparently ERA isn't a valid stat anymore?

It's kind of like batting average: it's always gonna be on the back of the baseball card, but there are much more useful stats to actually gauge player performance.

Sure but considering i can't find era+ leaderboards outside the top 10. And that Baseball Reference gives Jon Lester a 3.1war, espn a 2.9war and Fangraphs a 5.0 war im not sure what to believe. Era got the job done proving his rating is deserved.

A bunch of stat hipsters in this thread.

How about FIP? What was the pitcher in question again? Lol. I wasn't really trying to get into a debate about a pitcher, just commenting on the usefulness of ERA.

Nope. SIERA, XFIP and FIP are all better when you want to look at how effective a pitcher is

Using stats that are more representative of a player's production doesn't make you a hipster.

Lester has been a top 15 pitcher for the last 2 seasons

Ok I finally found a leaderboard for the whole league for these on fangraphs. Apparently fangraphs has a much easier way to find these then on baseball ref. So i know what fip is but what is different about XFIP?

The main difference, only difference I believe, is that home runs are regressed to an expected number based on league average flyball to home runs %.

I've heard some people don't like using statistical regression like that since you can make the argument that some pitchers give up hard hit balls so they would have a higher flyball to HR ratio. Same with ground balls. Maybe a sinkerballer has a higher GB% rate, but they may also be giving up harder hit ground balls resulting in more hits.
