Re: What if the commentary had signature calls?
All the Hawk stuff aside, I still don't think creating/adding signature calls for Matt to repeat would benefit the commentary mainly because the thing that makes signature calls "signature" is that they are organic in delivery. Further, one of the only reasons they stand out is because, over time, they become associated with particular guys, teams, or moments and catch on (even if some of them are lame and clearly forced...like Hawk's).
None of that would be true if someone scripted such lines for Matt to pretend to have a connection with and it would only, IMO, further the issues of realistic reactions that are present with real-life broadcasters doing video game commentary (one of the continued complaints with Matt). Without a real connection to Matt or some team/moment, it would likely just come off as another line that's repeated too much.
I think we're better off with SCEA continuing to push (as they appear to now be doing) for getting more of Matt's real-life emotion to translate in-game which should, in turn, bring out more of his personal touches.Comment

Re: What if the commentary had signature calls?
I thought they did have signature calls.
That was a moonshot folks a loooong homerun.
that pitch was straight as a string.
and it's right... down... broadway...
and that's what you call matador defense. Ole!
there are others. Sure a lot of them are generic but they work.Comment

Re: What if the commentary had signature calls?
My thought is that it would probably be very annoying to anyone playing against the teams whose signatures are being used. I already want to mute the announcers whenever I play in Chicago because Matty V will occasionally say "good guys" like Hawk Harrelson. Perhaps some of the other "catch phrases" from around the league would be less grating, but I've found the best announcers are the ones who don't try to force sounding "cool" and just call the action as they see it and let the moments flow without being contrived.
As an aside, I truly don't understand how even Sox fans can stand Harrelson. What kind of 70 year old man still refers to himself as "Hawk", for crying out loud?Comment

Re: What if the commentary had signature calls?
There are a few of these. Carlos Santana has quite a few different ones that are a play on the song titles of Santana. "Oye Como Va", "He's trying to change his evil ways" and one more I can't rememberComment
