Re: MLB 16 Franchise Progress Thread

I just had a thriller of a game for game 1 in the world series in my cubs franchise vs the rangers. Siler started us off with a solo shot in the 2nd to lead 1-0. Top 3rd had cole hamels, andrus, sho-choo-and Fielder get 4 straight hits for the Rangers to take the lead 3-1. In the 5th I had the bases loaded with 1 out and Fowler up...Fowler grounded into a double play. In the 6th I had 1 out with runners on 1st and 2nd...Bryant grounded into a double play, still down 3-1. Heywood it a solo shot in the 7th to bring it to 3-2. In the bottom of the 9th I had 2 outs with Fowler up.....yet another solo shot to tie it at 3!

Into extra innings we went and now it's a bullpen game. Nothing was going through the 12th. In the 13th I had Hammel pitching and he was lights out striking out 3 and gave up no hits in 2 innings. So I was in the bottom of the 13th with 2 outs and Hammel was up to bat. I figured I only had 2 relievers left so I would let him swing the bat. What do you think happens next on an 0-1 count.....Hammel hits a walk off solo homerun! The first time I have ever hit a homerun with a pitcher and it's possibly the most clutch homerun I have ever hit! Cubs lead the world series 1-0.

Hey guys, just want to say I've been following along even though I haven't updated as much and your guys progress through your franchises has been exciting to follow! I love seeing how your seasons have come along and about all the sick draft picks you guys have made. I'm on of the weirdos who plays every inning of every game, so I don't progress at as fast of a rate as some of you, but I play the game a lot and by the end of tonight I'll be caught up to the real life Cubs. Check out how freaky close these numbers are:

The Show '16 Cubs through 42 games:
      Runs- 237
      Runs allowed- 131

Real life '16 Cubs through 43 games:
      Runs- 235
      Runs allowed- 126

Real life Cubs are winning 8-0 tonight, but I didn't include that. That's seriously crazy to me. We have a better record(33-9), the best in baseball. My team has a higher average and a lot more HRs. We definitely walk a lot less lol. Ive been fortunate to have very few injuries this far and have a number of guys on my team doing serious damage right now.

Anthony Rizzo is in the midst of a 20 game hit streak. On the year he's batting .278, 19 HR, 50 RBIs!!!

Kris Bryant leads the league in hitting with a .377 avg along with 13 HR and 36 RBIs.

Jake Arrieta through 9 starts is 9-0! He has had a few rough outing in a row, increasing his ERA to 2.01 in 67 IP, but the offense bailed him out and he got the wins.

Hector Rondon has is T-3rd in Saves having saved 14/15 opportunities.

The way things are headed we should be very well represented in the all star game as we have a number of players in the top 2-3 in their respective positions. Just need to keep up the hot pace!

Man, Boeve looks like a mouse compared to this kid. My guy took the usual years to get there. This kid might be an ace by September. Wow.
I went ahead and put Connors in the #4 spot in the rotation. Here's his first stat line:

        Win 5-0 over KC
        6+ IP, 5 H, 0 R, 5 BB, 6 K

The strike outs he tallied were in huge spots. I definitely nibbled and it showed with 5 walks which kills me as a pitcher. It wasn't his fault, it was mine lol. I pitched kinda scared to the middle of the lineup. I was greedy in the 7th inning as I put him back out there because he was at 95 pitches. Gave up a single + walk then went ahead and pulled him. Would've been a better line without my poor decision. Fortunately Nick Burdi came in and K'd a guy then got a DP.

        Here's his scouting report:
        2 seem FB: 93-95
        Slider: 87-89
        Curve: 81-83
        Circle change: 86-88

I'm happy with the debut but I will attack the zone better moving forward. I plan on playing each game he starts + one game per series outside of the series he doesn't have a scheduled start.

I'll try to get a video of him in action.

Is anyone else noticing too many home runs by the CPU in a game? Seems like all of a sudden, no matter how well I'm pitching, they will still manage to bang out about 3 a game. Their hitting power is set at 5. I've only noticed it in the past few days.

Nope, I haven't noticed it. Played 2 games yesterday, one I won 2-0, the other I lost 8-4.

Sometimes I do - it can be feast or famine for the CPU and HR. I've definitely had stretches where I just will give up a HR. At one point, my other team was 20th in HR allowed.

What I notice more, though, is giving up some sort of ridiculous BABIP if my pitcher doesn't have top stuff - every out seems to be by K's while every contact falls in for a hit, even if they chase or pull off the pitch. Hate it when it does that.

One hitter swung at a ball so far in that the batter couldn't even complete the swing animation...and it still got through for a hit. I don't even know how he made contact on the ball.

I was going to do a Twins season but man I just can't at this point. I have no idea who will be contributors past this year besides Park and Sano.

SP William Connors 2nd start @ BOS

                    (ND) 7 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K

A great diving play by Byron Buxton saved a run in the 6th. Ended up getting a no decision and we lost 2-1 in a walk off single 9th. Connors actually struck out the side in the 7th to my surprise. Great way to finish off his start. I just couldn't generate any offense for him.

Swept the Rays in the ALDS! Marwin Gonzalez is playing out of his mind at least in round 1, batting over .500 . Granted its only 3 game but still.

We will be going against the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALCS.

My Braves are playing pretty bad through around 50 games, 12 games under .500 and in 4th in the NL East Division. We have one of the worst offenses in the league run scoring wise, but have been getting plenty of hits. Our pitching has improved. I recently traded C Tyler Flowers to the Nats for reliever Matt Belisle, which panned out pretty well. Any other roster move suggestions that might help improve the team, I'm open to anything. I'm using the OSFM V3 roster by the way

                          <table><td bgcolor=#004684>End of Regular Season - 2016</td></table>

What a ride this season has been. We took 2 of 3 from Detroit to start the month. Then swept Minnesota and got swept by the White Sox. We followed that up by sweeping Oakland in 4 games and losing 2 of 3 to those damn White Sox and Division leading Indians. That series loss to the Indians was the turning point for both teams though. We went on to sweep Detroit and Minnesota back to back while the Indians would lose 2 of 3 to those pesky White Sox and then get swept by the Tigers and lose 1st place in the process. Schedule makers might have known a thing or 2 ahead of time as the last series of the season just so happened to be against Cleveland. All we needed was one win to clinch the division and Dillon Gee made sure we did just that getting us 5-2 win in the first game. We ended up taking 2 of 3 and finish the season at 93-69. Worst of all division winning teams and 1 of the 4 Wild Card teams.

Giants and their even year BS finished with the best record at 105-57 while the Brewers were the worst at 59-103. 1 of 3 teams to finish with 100+ losses. The others being the Padres and probably the most surprisingly bad team of the year the Diamondbacks. The Angels just barely beat out the Red Sox and Mariners by 1 game to be the 2nd AL Wild Card team. While the Nationals and Cardinals will play a game 163 to figure out who will play the Dodgers.

                          Spoiler

Offense still not firing on all cylinders. But its getting the job done for now. Lorenzo Cain hit .351/.419/.521 in his last 25 games. Finishing the season at .295/.364/.463 with 12 HR and 56 RBI to go along with a team leading 31 SB. And 6.25 WAR which is 4th in the AL. Kendrys Morales had almost identical numbers in '16 as he did in '15. Hitting .290/.362/.484 (.290/.362/.485 in '15). with 26 HR and 86 RBI. Eric Hosmer fell off a bit. Finished hitting .265/.318/.438 but set a career high in HR with 25 and RBI with 97. Alex Gordon fell off more than a bit. He hit .254/.338/.383 with 14 HR and 62 RBI. Thats his lowest OPS since 2010. Salvador Perez set a career high with 80 RBI. And Jarrod Dyson finished with the highest OPS of his career at .720. As a team we had a .253 AVG (22nd), .314 OBP (27th) and .387 OPS (25th). With 134 HR (25th) 95 SB (7th) and 950 strikeouts (1st).

                          Hitting Stats

                          Spoiler

We were good enough to win 93 games. But we scored the least amount of runs of all playoff teams. So we need to figure something out in the next few days. Or hope like hell our pitching it better than their bats.

As for the pitching. Its about the same its been the last couple months. 3.60 ERA the last month. We finished 6th in the majors with a 3.52 ERA (1st in the AL). Id have to say Dillon Gee was maybe not the best but the most valuable starter for us. Finished the season 14-1 with a 2.34 ERA in 123.1 IP. Wasnt expected to do much at all this year even as a long reliever. And turned into our most reliable guy in the rotation. Yordano Ventura had the most up and down season. When he was off. He was really off. But when he was on. Well good luck. He finished the season at 10-7 with a 3.71 ERA in 184.1 IP. Much better if you take out the first 2 months of the season. Since June he was 10-3 with a 2.93 ERA in 128.2 IP. 1.22 WHIP and 124 K's to 49 BB's. Mike Minor was another guy not expected to do all that much but turned out to be one of the better options for us. After missing the first 2 months of the season while recovering from shoulder surgery. He stepped in and went 7-3 with a 3.05 ERA. 94.1 IP with 60 K's and 34 BB's. Bullpen wasnt as good as it had been the last few years. But the top 3 guys still got the job done. Herrera and Hochevar combined to go 9-3 with a 2.61 ERA in 151.2 IP with 169 K's. Then you got Wade Davis. Man did he take a step back. After having a 0.94 ERA with a 0.79 WHIP in 2015. He had a 1.10 ERA and 0.84 WHIP in 2016. He also broke the Royals single season save record collecting 59 saves while blowing 4. Those 59 saves are good for 2nd all time (my sliders may have been a bit screwed up so this may be a bit inflated. 4 Guys ended up with 50+. There had never been more than 2 before.)

                          Spoiler

I feel pretty good with where we are pitching wise right now. Going into the playoffs the rotation will be Ventura, Gee, Minor and Volquez. Medlen would be next in line if something was to happen.

At the first of July and the Cardinals still hold a 4 game lead on the Cubs. Unless someone gets extremely hot in the 2nd half of the season and the Cubs and Cards get extremely cold, it appears that its only going to be a 2 team race in the central this year. The Pirates in 3rd place, are sitting 14 games out of first.

I have a bit of an issue that I am dealing with as I try to determine what to do with Brandon Moss and now Kolten Wong. Earlier in the year we traded Lance Lynn to Boston for Brock Holt. Lynn was pissed that he wasn't in the rotation and we took on the utility man Holt due to him being able to play all over the field, including right field, where we were plugging pieces when Stephen Piscotty got hurt. Now that Piscotty is back, right field is shored up and we have been playing Brock Holt (hitting .292) at 2nd base primarily because Wong has been struggling at the plate. I don't really want to give up on Wong, as he is signed in the game for the next 5 years and he is rated highly at the position and is a good defensive player. But Holt is just as good with the glove, or has been of late, but is overall a better hitter, while his upside may not be quite as high as Wong, his production has been far better. So with the trade deadline looming, do I dangle Wong for help in the field, or prospects? Or do I hold on to him and see if he can outplay Holt at some point in the season and deal with Wong in the offseason? This is what I'm leaning towards.

In regards to Brandon Moss, his production is terrible at best. While he does possess pop in his bat, his average is below .200 at this point in the season. I even placed him in Memphis for 2 weeks trying to see if that helped, and it didn't. He hit in Memphis, but he can't hit in St.Louis. Matt Adams has resurged and taken over at first base. He's hitting for both average and power after his month long stay in both Springfield (AA) and Memphis. And moreso than that, he's a better glove than Moss at first. Now I know that Moss can play the outfield and we do have an opening out there for a role player, but I don't know that I want to hang on to him the rest of the season and hope that he hits for average at some point. I'm not sure he's cut out to play anything other than 1B/DH in the majors. I have offers for him from several teams, but all of them are for prospects. And the question comes up as do I trade a bat that has pop and could be serviceable somewhere over the next 4 months and a pennant chase, for prospects who won't be able to ideally help the ball club until few years. I've looked at trading him for role players in the outfield, but nothing came up.

So that is where I'm at....decisions, decisions.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Almost at the All Star Break and the Braves are third in the NL East, 13 games behind the division leading Nationals. Funny thing is, we are still only 1GB from the wildcard, so there's hope. Also just got done with a three game series with the Nat's and managed to take 2/3 from them. Have a lot of young guys in the lineup with Mallex Smith: .289 2HR 15SB, Dansby Swanson (called up in June): .260 7HR, and newly acquired Nomar Nazara (trade) .320 12HR

I have a question about roster management for the franchise crowd: what's typically your cutoff for players you want to protect from the Rule 5 draft during the off-season, in terms of OVR, age, and POT?

I always wrestle with whether to put a high-50s/low-60s A/B POT player on the 40 man because that starts the clock ticking on option years, etc. But I'm also wary of having promising young talent poached.

How do you guys handle this?
