Re: Official MLB The Show 16 Fantasy Draft Franchise Progress Thread

    Another Series Lost
Blue Jays Take Two of Three

The Sox continue to scuffling along as they limp to the end of May. The Blue Jays series at least wasn't a sweep, so if there's a such thing as moral victories...maybe this is a start.

However, in terms of what actually happened, the Sox keep coming up short. In game 1, the Jays were held in check through six innings by Dickey, but found themselves ahead 2-1. The Sox rallied to take a 3-2 lead, but a fatigued Chapman gave up a run to make it a 3-3 game. Urias suffered the loss as he gave up a walk-off 2-run HR.

Game 2 was a wild affair and the bats actually showed up. Ichiro is cooling back down but he got his first home run of the year...that's how off the Jays' pitching was in this one. Gallo, Carter, and Juan Francisco all picked up home runs as well as the Sox put a dozen on the board.

Tanner Roark continues to look shaky and couldn't dance through the rain drops this time. Fortunately for him, it didn't matter too much in this one, but the concern remains.

Game 3 was back to the usual lack of offense. This time, Chris Sale was the victim. He pitched his butt off again as he continues to put together a good start to the year. But you can't win if you can't score, and Stroman made sure the Sox didn't score. He shut Boston down on just 1 hit for the complete game 1-hit shutout.

Next series is an important one to close out the month. The Sox will travel to Camden Yards to face the 3rd place O's who are 3 games back.

      Player Development News:

SP Kodi Medeiros may be coming to life in terms of his development. The 19-year-old is starting to show signs of harnessing his stuff and making better decisions in games.

Starting pitchers Alex Reyes and Julio Urias are both starting to be refined in the fire of pitching at the major league level. For Urias, command is what he's learning best right now, while for Reyes, some command along with a little of everything else, including a budding confidence that he belongs up at this level.

OF Mallex Smith might be getting consumed by that same fire. Scouts are concerned that he's not making the same adjustments that SS Jorge Mateo seems to be making. He might be returned to Pawtucket soon, though who would replace him at the majors is a very good question.

Speaking of Mateo, it's been baby steps in the eyes of most evaluators, and some think it's good he's facing the adversity he's been going through in this latest stretch. While Mateo isn't shooting forward (yet), he is moving forward in the eyes of most evaluators.

OF Bryon Buxton has been some forward progress though it's a little mixed as scouts are souring a little on his ability to hit southpaws. Defensively, he's continuing to make consistent strides forward. It's the bat that's still the question mark.

Is Ichiro getting better? Scouts have raised their opinions of his ability to hit lefties. Ichiro is batting .360 against left-handed pitching so far. Can a 42-year-old player actually improve? Ichiro might give us one possible answer as the year goes on.

C Gary Sanchez is another that might be too overmatched at the bigs right now. Scouts are actually pulling down some of their grades at the plate. That's not too surprising given his production to this point, but still somewhat concerning that they won't even give a "grace period" like they are for Mallex.

The recent shakiness plaguing Jeurys Familia hasn't gone unnoticed. Scouts have a mixed-to-negative report on Familia at the moment. This combined with Chapman's continued rise might mean a role shift...or it could mean a larger number of innings about to come Chapman's way.

For those of you that are deep into your Fantasy Franchise I was wondering how the CPU handles fatigue, injuries etc...
I'm asking because I noticed that after a draft a lot of teams are DEEP at pitching but short to the point there are only like 2 guys on the bench for offense. I mean if a starter is tired and there is no substitute at that position what happens?

He'll have to play tired or maybe the CPU can manuever the lineup around some.

I turned the trades slider up in hopes of helping address that (teams with ton of depth on the mound could trade it for some help in the field), but so far all that's done is made everyone want to trade with me lol.

            Trade Block Heats Up
Hosmer Highlights List of Shopped Players

Likely citing salary concerns, the Rockies have put Eric Hosmer on the trading block. Hosmer is set to become a free agent, so the Rockies are thought to want to get something for him.

He's not the only solid looking player now on the block. Trae Turner, an interesting SS prospect, is being dangled out as bait. SP Garrett Richards, also of the Rockies, is put up for trade as well.

Tony Kemp is on the block from the Giants, which might have had Boston taking a look if Sano wasn't due to come back soon. Kemp could play while Mallex Smith returned to the minors, but that might happen anyway with Sano returning soon.

            Padres Offer Blanco. Twice.

The Padres must be serious about moving Gregor Blanco. The Red Sox confirmed that Blanco was a subject of trade talks...twice in three days. Each time, the Red Sox expressed perhaps passing interest but insisted the team is not looking for deals right now.

So far, the Padres have moved on, but that may change going forward, especially with the Boston outfield considered one of the worst in baseball right now.

            Schwarber Returns. Sano, Finnegan Soon

The Sox are getting close to being back at full health in the lineup. Schwarber was cleared to play and will start in the team's next game. A source close to the clubhouse mentioned that Finnegan is expected back in a week and Sano in a couple days.

The big question looming that no one wants to ask: What happens to Ichiro's playing time? Injuries have given Ichiro a full workload, and he's done a pretty decent job at the plate and been more than solid in the field. Some think he could remain the starter in RF, forcing Buxton to either the bench or to CF instead of Mallex Smith.

So after some research, I'm ready for a final draft. I'm gonna focus on getting a solid ace, followed by a strong C/SS/2B/CF and then fill out the rest. More later

Sano Returns to Second Place Sox
                New Month, Same Ol' Mess?

Well, the change to June hasn't changed much so far. The Sox lost three of four against the O's with the last two games seeing the Sox score a grand total of 4 runs.

The combination of the Sox going 2-8 in their last 10 and Yankees roaring with an 8-2 stretch has put the Sox behind their archrivals by 2 percentage points (.566 vs .564). The O's are just 1 game back of putting the Sox in 3rd place.

That fast April start seems to be a distant memory. Optimism abounds because of the return of Sano and Schwarber, but we'll see. Even if the Gallo-Carter-Schwarber-Sano quartet do their thing, can they carry the whole lineup themselves?

                Robles Day-to-Day

Boston got an injury scare when Hansel Robles complained of some arm tightness during the Red Sox 3-2 loss in 13 innings to start June. Fortunately, MRI came back negative and Robles was diagnosed with just an elbow strain.

                Buxton Starts, Smith Departs

The return of Sano spelled the end of this horrific stretch for Mallex Smith. The young outfielder was just out of sorts at the plate. Now, he can head back to Pawtucket, where he was batting .280 before the call-up, and try to regain his form and confidence. Meanwhile, Buxton will patrol center field and Ichiro remains the starter in right field.

Not sure if it's the influence of Ichiro or if Boston simply wants to tap the Nippon Leagues for talent, but each of the top three picks call the land of the rising sun home.

1st Round - SP Ken Kojima, 21, 62/B - Scouts love Kojima's command and think he could emerge as a true control artist. He has the usual assortment of pitches, nothing exotic or special there and the movement on these pitches isn't great either. Should be enough to do the job, but nothing "wow". Still, if he can mix those pitches and locate them well, he could become a solid, or better, pitcher. His development will need to be relatively quick, though, given his age.

2nd round - SS Hitoki Nomura, 18, 61/C - Nomura is a defensive shortstop in the making. The big thing he'll have to work on, other than his hitting, will be his arm. Right now, it's not a shortstop's arm. If the arm comes around, he could be a real force with his glove. He's already got the footwork and quickness to play the position at the major league level.

3rd round - LF Stephen Ogawa, 19, 56/D - Ogawa looks like a disappointing pick, and the lack of upside was something of a let down. However, he's got a good contact bat and should at least develop the range to play in the outfield. He'll probably have a left fielder's arm, so that's not a concern. It's just a matter of how high that ceiling really is and if he can do enough to elevate projections over time. He's quite young so time is on his side for now.

4th round - 2B Alex Ortega, 18, 56/D - Unlike Ogawa, Ortega probably is simply a disappointment. Scouts were expecting more out of Ortega, but right now, he might be projected for little more than a defensive replacement. He'll have to work hard from now on to get on the team's radar because right out of the gate he's already let down team expectations. That can be a hard sentiment to turn around.

5th round - RP Eddie Rodriguez, 19, 63/B - If Ortega and Ogawa are varying degrees of disappointment, Eddie Rodriguez is pure surprise. There was not a lot of information on Eddie when he was selected, so when they saw a relatively rounded young pitcher, it was all smiles around the practice field. Rodriguez may not develop pinpoint control, but he shouldn't be overly wild. Eddie may be able to mix his two types of fastballs effectively and use the change as his out pitch.

6th round - 3B Lou Urbina, 19, 45/B - Lou was another surprise to the upside. He is very raw, but he shows a lot of fundamental strengths that could improve rapidly with instruction and experience. It is difficult right now to project what his strengths might be. Right now, his biggest strength is his youth and the good habits he seems to already possess. This should let his tools develop and show what sort of talent profile he'll latch on to as he matures.

7th round - RP Mark Brooks, 18, 66/D - Mark is an interesting case. He is very well developed for a high school pitcher. The problem is that scouts are uncertain if he'll ever develop much more even as his body fills out and he gains experience as a pro ballplayer. The main concern is between his ears. He seems to get overly confident in his pitches and just doesn't make good decisions on the mound. He doesn't miss due to wildness, he intends to throw pitches near the middle, daring hitters to hit them. That causes his stuff to play down and makes him more hittable than he might should be. He needs to realize doesn't have that kind of stuff. Eddie does show signs of being a good reliever, but the weaknesses keep coming back. It's uncertain if he'll ever be willing or able to adjust and learn better.

Lindor and Inciarte return, but Matheny's Red Birds have lost 7 of their last 10

Manager Mike Matheny argues balls and strikes vs the Pirates

May 10th 2016 - The Cardianals welcomed back two key players to the top of their order and up the middle in SS Francisco Lindor and CF Ender Inciarte. Lindor who went down with a hairline fracture in his forearm in the just the second game of the year has looked great and continues to have a hot bat. Inciarte also is showing no ill effects of his sprained shoulder suffered just 2 weeks ago. Even though the Cardinals managed to just reel off 2 straight wins vs division rival Pittsburgh, they have lost 7 of their last 10 and are clinging to a .5 game lead over the Pirates and Cubs in the NL Central. The bat's have cooled and the pitching has been rocky after such a great start in April. Kenta Madea was roughed up vs the Phillies for 7 ER in a loss, the bullpen has been not holding their end of the bargin either. Marmol was given his release and Rodon was called up. The flame throwing RHP has had a shakey start. Also Kevin Quakenbush has been is a rut for a few weeks now. Manager Mike Matheny feels the team will find it's footing here and he expects the bats to again find the gaps. There is a very real position battle though taking place as rookie Tyler White is clearly out hitting incumbent starter Mikael Franco. So much so Franco has found himself losing starts to White lately and has voiced his displeasure.

"We understand Mikael's frustration, but at the same time you have a kid in Tyler who is flat out hitting the baseball and outplaying him. When you have that you need to look in the mirror and figure out how you can compete, and not complain about it. If you don't like it, make something happen with your opportunities". GM Michael Sword made those comments in response to Franco's comment that he can't get better without AB's. Rumors are swirling around the league that both White and Franco are on the block and one of them will be dealt for the right package which must include a solid starting pitcher. The Cardinals are looking to add either a strong veteran to the rotation or another young gun to add to their arsenal. The Cards feel comfortable with either White or Franco at 3rd and feel they have enough depth with Brock Holt to fill in spot starts at 3B when needed. It will be interesting to see if they do indeed swing a trade, or keep both White and Franco who also both play 1B. In the meantime Greg "The Birdman" Bird has a firm grip on 1B as he leads the team in both HR's (8) and RBI's (25), along with Bryce Harper (7 HR's 23 RBI's) they have formed a major 3,4 combo and if Starling Marte can find his power swing they will have a legit murderers row!

The Cardinals are now about to embark on a west coast road trip starting in LA vs the Angels, then on to the Dodgers.

                      Sox Back On Track?

The Sox are looking better again, perhaps the optimism was warranted. In the last couple weeks, the team has put together a current 7-game win streak with the last two of those wins coming on walk-off, come-from-behind fashion.

The power being back might be one reason for the turnaround, and both walk-off wins came via the home run. Sano and Carter did the deeds. Carter is now up to 20 home runs to match Gallo for the team lead. Seeing Carter belt one is encouraging as he's been slowed down lately, even during the winning streak.

The win streak has the Sox back in first place by 3 games over the O's, who the Sox are currently hosting.

                      Sano Confounds Scouts?

Sano is having an amazing season right now. His batting average is hovering around .400 with 18 home runs to go with it. This strong play has scouts breaking their own grading system. They have moved Sano's grade up to 91 out of 99...yet his potential is still considered short of "A" range.

One scout said he's factoring in the chemistry Sano seems to be enjoying with his BoSox buddies in the dugout:

"He's always just all smiles out there. He's so free and easy and it's like he's just playing in the backyard or something. His grade is probably 'too high' on a fundamental level, but I'm factoring in an increased performance given that kind of attitude and atmosphere."

Whatever it is, the Red Sox hope it lasts all year long. They are getting far more than they hoped out of Sano.

Is Chapman Content or Just Calm?

Something that's been watched in the bullpen is the dynamic between Chapman and Familia. There does not seem to be any tension between the two, but not a lot of words are shared between them either.

"It's hard to tell if they can't stand each other, tolerate each other professionally since they are both trying to win on the same team, or if it's just a calm sort of thing and they just had little to say to each other?" Sox manager John Farrell commented.

Chapman has always deflected questions about his role and his feelings about his role in post-game interviews and during press conferences.

Any angst that's inside Chapman hasn't hurt his play on the field. Farrell has turned to the flamethrowing lefty the most of any reliever in terms of innings and just one short of Herrera for the lead in appearances. Chapman's handle pretty much any challenge he has to face, and his 2.15 ERA probably should be lower given his 0.69 WHIP.

                        Hey Joe, Whaddya Know?

The New Era of the Chicago Cubs is upon us. The MLB called for a league wide re-draft to spice things up amongst the teams and possibly create more league balance than we have ever seen before. Joe Maddon, Theo Epstein, and Tim Kutz got together a few weeks ago to discuss how they would attack this draft. The conversation went like this: We want an ace, we want youth, with a few vets to keep the kids heads straight. Essentially, they want to redraft their current team in a sense, as they had an ace in Arrieta, vets like Zobrist, etc.

Draft night came and the lottery balls were spun. "With the first overall pick in the league-wide redraft, the Chicago Cubs are now on the clock". The war room went nuts. The rest is history. Here are your NEW Chicago Cubs

                        Line-Up:

                        1) SS Jean Segura

                        Pitching Rotation
                        1) L Clayton Kershaw
                        2) R Aaron Nola
                        3) L Alex Wood
                        4) R Trevor Bauer

Game 1 is finished, with some...favorable results. This team is ready to make history. Manager Joe Maddon has one rule: TRY NOT TO SUCK

                                Rotation Injuries Strike Again

The Red Sox are riding another long win streak, but it's not all been happiness and joy as the top two pitchers in the rotation are out and on the DL.

Chris Sale left a game with an undisclosed injury. As he got checked out by the medical staff, they found a serious bruise on the back of his head, discovered when Sale expressed discomfort and complained of a headache during the exam.

It was diagnosed as a contusion and has left him out of action for about another week or so.

Then in the most recent game, Taijuan Walker sprained his knee getting off the mound to field a ball. He could miss up to a month as he heals and rehabs the injury.

With Julio Urias showing more struggles, the team called Dylan Bundy back to the majors in hopes that he's fixed his issues. If not, the team might have to reach for new blood in the minors. Either Carson Fullmer or Jose Berrios, or both, seem most likely for promotion in that case. Berrios in particular has done pretty well in AAA, posting a 2.80 ERA so far.

                                30 for Mateo

Jorge Mateo's speed and energy continue to boost the Red Sox attack. In his last game, he swiped two bags to give him 30 on the year. He's also on an eight-game hitting streak, one he extended with a surprise bunt single just past the pitcher's mound.

                                20 for Sano

Miguel Sano clubbed his 20th HR, a 3-run shot over the Monster. He joins Carter and Gallo with 20 home runs on the team.

In fact, all three middle of the order hitters have surprisingly similar stats. Each has 20 home runs, they are all within one RBI of each other (Sano and Gallo have 49, Carter has 48), and Carter and Gallo have nearly the same runs scored (43 and 42, respectively).

"If Schwarbs [Kyle Schwarber] can stop slacking and lagging behind, each of us sluggers could have 20 homers right now, " Sano joked.

Perhaps scary is the fact Sano's 20 home runs have come in just 43 games (168 AB, 181 PA). He's slugging over .800 with a 1.276 OPS. He also still hovering around .400 in batting average.

                                15 More for Ichiro

Speaking of round numbers, Ichiro continues his march towards 3,000 hits. He went 1-for-5 in his latest outing to put himself at 2,985 hits.

Ichiro got an injury scare when he was hit on the shin with a pitch. He's been getting thrown at more lately as well, so the Sox are watching out for it.

"If it happens again when I'm out there, someone's gonna have a souvenir bruise to take home after the game, " Chapman spoke, "bad enough to pick on an older guy like Ichiro, but someone going for a milestone - that makes it worse."

I don't know if Ichiro would like being called "an older guy", but I'm sure he appreciates the support. Chances are, Chapman said (and probably will do) what others were thinking.
