Red Sox Acquire Maeda from A's
Sox Seek Rotation Help as Offense Slows

Desperate for experienced rotation help, the Red Sox dealt another from their embarassment of riches in the outfield prospects department to add some more (hopefully healthy) help to the rotation.

And, of course, it's a Japanese player. Nippon-mania has hit Boston...or at least the front office...it seems.

Kenta Maeda is the most recent import from the East. The "fog of war" around these players is usually steep, but, then again, so it is with the probably-raw-rookies that occupy 3/5 of the rotation right now. And considering Chris Sale just lost again, going just 5 innings due partly to pitch count, and with just a 2-game lead, the Red Sox felt they needed more help.

"Boy can I call it," Boston's GM spoke, "I said we'd be fine until we hit another 2-8 stretch as a tongue-in-cheek sort of thing...guess what...we went 2-5 this week."

Indeed the streaky Sox continue, and scary is the offense might be slowing down, or perhaps simply regressing towards the mean a bit. Either way, that means pitching becomes more paramount - further sparking a trade.

Departing Boston's organization will be CF Anthony Alford. He was behind Mallex Smith (and Buxton and DeShields, Jr. if he can bounce back healthy, for that matter), and yes, there's more outfield prospects in the system. So while Alford is regard as a top 50 prospect, the organization felt comfortable making the trade straight up.

Making room on the active roster is Alex Reyes.

For his part, Kenta is thrilled to be playing alongside Ichiro and his chase for 3,000 hits.

"I watched him as a kid and followed him when he went to play in America and now I'm playing here, too, and on the same team. I can't wait to play our first game together, " Maeda spoke via interpreter.

      July the Last Gasp??

      Also of concern...August and September.

It may be odd looking ahead that far, but the schedule will present more challenges for the Sox. July will be one big giant home stand. Literally, only six games on the road in the month.

After that? How about essentially a two-month long road trip sound to end the year? September especially will be a reversal of July, just a handful of games at home.

So July might be the time the Sox will have to heat it up.

Of course, Boston has actually done better on the road so far, though that might be a product of hot hitting (or better pitching as Fenway and the 330-ft pop up HR don't mesh well with struggling young pitchers, nor does giving up line drives...right Alex Reyes?), or where the Sox happened to be when the 10-game win streaks happened.

Recently, the Sox are 9-8 on the road, and that's including the part that was within the latest 10-game win streak.

        ASTROS WIN 4-1

After two tough loses in a row, the Stros bounced back with a solid team victory. Steven Matz (1-0 1.50)earned the victory and left the game with a line of 6IP 7H 1R 7K. The lone run came off of a Eduardo Nunez solo shot in the 1st inning. It took the Astros bats until the 6th inning to come alive against JA Happ (0-1 0.00). A two out error allowed Adam Jones to reach base. After that, things unraveled as the Astros had 5 straight hits and scored all 4 of their runs in the inning. The Astros bullpen was stellar, allowing 1 hit over three innings. Ken Giles picked up his first save of the season.

          ASTROS WIN 2-1

The Astros earned the victory in a tight ballgame, picking up their first series victory of the season. Gavin Floyd (1-0 1.50) pitched 6 innings of 3 hit ball, striking out 5 and allowing just 1 run, curtosy of a Khris Davis solo shot in the 2nd. Carlos Correa hit his second home run of the young season in the first inning. In the 4th inning, Jed Lowrie legged out a triple, and came across on a feilders choice by David Freese. Trevor Gott pitched 2 innings of hitless relief striking out 4, before Ken Giles came in and shut it down, earning his second save of the season. The Astros will be looking to earn the series sweep, but it will be no easy task as Homer Bailey (1-0 1.23) faces off against Madison Bumgarner (1-0 0.00) in the series finale.

            ASTROS LOSE 6-3

Homer Bailey fell apart in the 6th giving up 4 of his 5 runs. The Astros chased Bumgarner in the 8th with 2 runs, but it was too little too late. The Astros head home to face the Royals in their home opener.

              ASTROS WIN 3-2

In what was a true pitchers dual, the Astros were able to secure the victory in the home opener. Buchholz (1-1 4.15) earned his 1st victory of the season scattering 6 hits over 7 innings, allowing 2 runs and striking out 3. The Royals starter, Colin McHugh (0-2 4.73) allowed 9 hits over 6.2 innings, only striking out 1 while allowing 3 runs. Jason Grilli earned his 2nd hold of the season, and Ken Giles came in to earn his 3rd save in as many tries. Carlos Correa was the offensive player of the game, going 2-4 with an RBI and 2 stolen bases.

                ASTROS WIN 1-0

Tonight was more of the same, with both starting pitchers dealing. Lance McCullers (1-0 1.15) pitched 8.2 Innings of 4H ball, striking out 6. McCullers counterpart, Kyle Hendricks (1-1 0.64) pitched to the outstanding line of 7.2IP 3H 1R 2BB and 8K. With 2 outs in the 8th, David Freese and Brandon Guyer drew consecutive walks. With Brock Holt up, giving Carlos Correa a much needed day off, manager AJ Hinch decided to pinch hit and bring in Correa. With his 7 game hitting streak on the line, Correa did not disappoint, hitting the game winning rbi single. Ken Giles came in to get the final out of the game, earning his 4th save of the season.

                  Promosing Prospect Kodi Medeiros Shelved

Kodi Medeiros was having a promising start to his young career. The 19-year-old southpaw was making strides and learning how to utilize his filthy stuff.

That all came to a screeching halt after collapsing in pain during a start for the Sea Dogs. The diagnosis and MRI confirmed the worst fears, he tore his rotator cuff and will miss the rest of the season for sure and his career may be in doubt.

Medeiros was struggling in terms of overall results, just 3-7 with a 5.44 ERA and a 1.74 WHIP, but a lot of that was him still learning how to set his release point and visualize the aim point so that his pitches can move away from bats instead of into them. When he figures it out, he's nasty. Despite the struggles, he still struck out 74 batters in 81 innings of work.

Now, the organization will have to wait and hope that their young prospect will be able to return to the game at all.

I need to start an investigation lol. And it's mostly pitchers, too. DeShields is the only hitter with a very long term injury. Lost Sano and Schwarber for a bit, but the months-long ones have all happened to pitchers and the majority of injuries in general have been to pitchers.

I might need to look at hiring a coaching staff where the only thing I care about is a positive Durability rating!

In what would end up being the Stros 2nd extra innings loss of this young season, Steven Matz pitched lights out, and Mark Teixeira hit his 4th home run of the season making it 3-1 going into the 8th. Trevor Gott gave up a HR to make it 3-2. Ken Giles allowed a HR in the 9th with 2 outs to Danny Valencia. The loss would come due to brock holts outstandingly weak arm. Holt may be getting moved soon, thanks to his 1-15 hitting performance on the season. More to come

                          ASTROS WIN 8-2

The 8 runs were more of a result of the struggling Royals defense than the Astros bats coming alive. The Royals are now 2-7 on the season. Gavin Floyd (2-0 1.29) pitched another solid game, going 8 innings allowing 6 hits 2 runs (1 earned) walking two and striking out 7. Nate Karns only lasted 3.1 innings, allowing 8 hits and 7 runs (4 earned).

                          UPDATE
After 10 games, the Astros are sitting in first in their division half a game up on the in state rival Texas Rangers. While the record seems ok, the offense is becoming quite a worrisome thing. Carlos Correa (.361 2HR 7RBI 8SB) & Jed Lowrie (.394 1HR 4RBI) are the only two in the lineup producing on a consistent basis. Mark Teixeira is batting .225 and all but 1 of his RBI have come curtosy of the home run. There are 6 Astros with regular playing time (either platoon or regulars) that are batting at or below .192

Fans have been calling in to the local radio stations clamoring for the hitting coach to be fired, and a trade to be made. When reached for comment, GM Jeff Lunhow had this to say "We are 10 games into the season, sitting in first place. It would be crazy to ship someone off this early into the race. I think a lot of the struggles you are seeing from guys like Jay Bruce (.192 0hr 0rbi) and Adam Jones (.158 0hr 0rbi) have more to do with the draft than anything else. These are guys that have been above-average all-stars throughout their careers. It's gonna take a little time, but we have faith in the organizational plan."

We will have to wait and see, but you can't argue "the plan" when its churning out W's.

This is two stellar outings in a row out of Buchholz, things are looking up. Manager AJ Hinch decided to bat Jed Lowrie 2nd, to take advantage of his hot start. All Lowrie did was have 3 hits and a run scored. Carlos Correa went 1-4 with 2 rbi, and Adam Jones finally did something hitting a solo shot in the 6th inning.
