Base stealing speed
So what's the minimum speed people are kind of thinking is someone they might try to steal with?

Re: Base stealing speed
Depends on the pitcher. So far my slowest successful steal came from a guy with 65 speed 35 BRA. Still learning the nuances of stealing though. I definitely would never attempt a steal with speed below 40. -

65/35? That must have been a good jump.

Re: Base stealing speed
I think the fastest guy on the Jays is only 78 speed which I thought was pretty slow. But maybe that's actually fast and I'm being influenced by my old days playing Madden football expecting 99 LOL I don't know?

Re: Base stealing speed
Most of my playing time has been with my carry over save from 14, but I've played about 5 - 7 games with the modern Jays and yeah Pillar can steal. You just have to pick your spots.
I should follow up by saying that against MOST pitchers, I won't consider stealing with a speed below 73. Odd number I know but it's the truth.Comment

Re: Base stealing speed
I regularly steal bases with Anthony Rizzo on the Cubs and he has a 51 Speed/34 Steal/39 Aggressiveness. Granted I get caught with him more than other base stealers, but it truly is a matter of situation. If the pitcher throws something in the dirt, or something offspeed like a changeup or curveball, he can easily make it. What I consider most is how fast the pitcher throws, and how good the catcher is. If I'm going against the Cardinals and Molina is behind the plate, I don't even bother because he is so good at getting that throw to second, but if I am playing against Wilson Ramos on the Nationals with his 38 arm accuracy, I'll take my chances. Anyone with speed over 50 I will take a chance with.
One cheese thing I have been known to do is if I have a player on with 2 outs and I get in to an 0-2 or 1-2 count early, if I have a good batter at the plate like Rizzo or Bryant, I will send the baserunner on first. This gives me one of 4 results:
1) If he gets thrown out, I get to start the next inning with one of my better hitters at bat again instead of waiting until the order turns over again. This is a way of getting an extra at bat with your better hitters without officially getting an extra at bat.
2) If he makes it then I have a runner on second with 2 out and one of my better hitters at bat, and presumably a better count considering he didn't strike out.
3) I get a hit and it turns in to a hit and run. Depending on the player's speed on first it may be a run.
4) I get out somehow, strikeout, lineout, pop fly.
In this situation I almost don't even care about the attributes of the player at 1st, although they generally have decent baserunning stats if they are in front of my big bats. Maybe all of that is common sense to some people, but I think it is rather genius.Comment

Re: Base stealing speed
sorry to bump this old thread, just had a question
In my franchise with blue jays, i find that i can steal bases wayy to easily, most of the times with guys who are between 65-78 speed, but ive also done it alot with guys in the 50's.
Before i was getting thrown out alot, but i noticed if i slide to the right,(hit right on the stick) im successfull 90% of the times maybe higher. i have 4 players who are in the top 4 in stolen bases in the league ( Pillar,Upton,Travis,Alcedes Escobar)
Is this normal for anyone else?Comment

Re: Base stealing speed
Re: Base stealing speed
The lowest I have tried with was about 70 give or take a couple points. If I can extend my lead off of first one step without the pitcher attempting a pick off, I can take second almost every time. However, extending the lead triggers a lot of pick off attempts so I often end up relenting. I have also been picked off a decent number of times. If I have a player with speed in the eighties or more, I will steal without extending my lead sometimes and that works pretty well. I do not attempt to take third without extending my lead one step.Comment

Re: Base stealing speed
i play HOF pitching, ALL Star Plus Hitting, im not sure why but my steal rate is extremely high even using runners with 65 speed, sometimes even a catcher with 50 speed as long as i use the correct slide into secondComment

Re: Base stealing speed
This is my current experience as well. Playing with the Cubs and I am in mid September. Heyward leads the league with 62 steals and has only been caught like 4 times. Szczur has like 42 off the bench, from being the primary pinch runner and has only been caught once. First pitch I go with either player.sorry to bump this old thread, just had a question
