And as the guy above said, the game, at times, makes contracts for it's players at or around a 50% discount. For example a $15mm IRL is an $8mm in the show. Once you bid on a free agent within the game, you've already artificially raised the threshold, have free agents coming off the books and are competing to sign free agents from the CPU that value contracts at about half the real life market rate.

I guess what my overarching concern is, is when playing with budgets, the threshold artificially raised and any edited contracts, it can have two drastic effects. 1. Ruin your franchise short term due to luxury tax demands. 2. Long Term - Because you will have a tonne of space you can outbid all other teams for any free agent.
I understand the concerns. I'm very curious to see how it plays out for myself though. And in addition, I plan on playing every game of 2016 for this franchise, and then after doing the offseason activities, we'll see how I go through 2017. I expect that if things go really wonky, it won't happen for a few years, probably 2019 or later, and I may not get that far into things.

As for having too much budget space, playing as the Cubs, the game incorrectly has Jake Arrieta listed as a free agent after 2016 when he's actually got one more year left in arb. So that means that I'm going to have to really pony up to keep him around. He's currently feeling as if he's worth north of 25 mil per season on his motivation screen, which well, is pretty accurate.
Anyone who claims to be a fan of two teams in the same pro sport is actually a fan of none.

Cubs are going to beast things up in the coming years. I would say your beloved cubs are going to need to pony up some serious coin to keep some of those home grown stars!

Good luck with your franchise. I guess my only warning would be with carry over saves, it's not unrealistic to think about finishing a couple of years even if you play every game. Maybe sim a couple times into 2019 and see how things go. I couldn't imagine the heart break of playing every game, then having to finish up because of something like a budget.

I want to play a dozen or more years with my current pirates franchise and carry it over year to year (who knows if il do this but planning on trying)

Budgets on or off for best franchise longevity and fun?

That's the question. At this stage, I don't think we've established what impact budgets could have. My initial inclination would be to turn them off if you were looking long term and just have fun.

I don't know how it will be in MLB16, but in my carryover that's in 2021, my team (Marlins) will have choices to make especially when it's time to sign my ace to a real contract. He'll want $30M for sure and all he's done was win a WS, win a WS MVP, win NL MVP, like 3 straight CYA and counting, throw a no hitter as a rookie, a perfect game a couple years later, sit the ML record for K's in a game with 21...and he's entering his prime years so, yeah, I'm going to pony up...leaving me with choices elsewhere.

I can't just outbid who I want. I lost Manny Machado in a bidding war in my last offseason. Nats offered $23 M so GG. I also lost Jose Fernandez when he tested the market and I lost that bidding war.

Teams are so strapped that ACES like bona fide Cy Young'ers are sitting on the FA wire because no one can afford to pay them the $27-30M they want. Heck, I can't without getting into trouble.

And this was in MLB14 where everyone said they had tons of money and I'm like "where?!"

We'll see how it goes once I get to the offseason in MLB16, but right now, I'm not planning to make a big splash (maybe no splash). Last offseason, my big signing was Tillman to like $10 M or something.

To this point, I haven't used carryover saves, but there's a good chance that I'll continue my current franchise into the future, so we'll see how that all plays out later on. Now that I have my long term options at 7 of the 8 positions on the field, there's no burning desire to start over and rebuild like I always used to, lol. I've actually been thinking a lot the last few weeks that I'm happy enough with the game that SCEA would really have to blow me away with improvements to get me to buy the 2017 version.

                Re: Budgets on or off?

I keep the budgets on. I like the feature. It keeps me honest.

Using the Yankees, we obviously have a big budget. When I make moves, in order to make a deal happen, I sometimes have to take a bad contract to make the math work. That's pretty realistic these days.

I'm already holding enough home grown bad contracts. I'm going to have to move on from Beltran, Tex & ARod this season. Might have to trade Ellsbury as well. If I can find a trade partner. Free up some cash.

                  Re: Budgets on or off?

As the A's playing in a 30 team control franchise, I keep Budgets on. It keeps the world authentic and if anything truly crazy happens with budgets, I can always fix it if that's the last resort.

Really encouraged by progression this year, should be the year I can finally carry over my save.
