How do you usually manage the 40 man roster in your franchise?

Who do you typically keep on the roster besides the 25 on your MLB team? Is it usually the prospects, or do you go based off of rule 5 draft eligibility? I never know how to handle the 40 man come September.

During the season - the 40 guys I'll most likely need. Prospects don't get on unless I plan the use them or anticipate that they might become MLB-ready during the year.

I don't want to expose them to waivers so I try to avoid putting them on unless needed during season since I don't want to have risk them to waivers (they probably won't clear).

I also tend not to use 60-day DL for that reason. It clears a spot, but I'll need that spot once the player comes back. If I fill it and have no other slots, it's back to exposing someone to waivers. So unless I can call up a true stop-gap type player (which is probably not going to be a good prospect), I just leave him on 15-day.

Offseason - it's governed by Rule 5 eligibility primarily.

I don't add prospects to the 40 man until I'm ready to have them come up to the big team or they're at risk of being exposed to the Rule 5 draft. Thankfully, the game lets you know who is at risk, so we're never in the dark. I always start the offseason by seeing which players might need added because of that.

So, starting in my second season in a franchise, my 26-40 man spots are generally made up of a couple of prospects, but mostly guys who can come up to the majors in the event of an injury. I'll often try to sign a few veterans at the end of the free agency period on cheap contracts and send them to AAA for that reason. I also generally leave a couple of spots on the 40 man open so that I can add a few guys via trade, or if I need to add a top prospect in order to promote him.
Anyone who claims to be a fan of two teams in the same pro sport is actually a fan of none.

How does it let you know who is at risk?

Bring up the player details and then move through the screens. One of them shows you his transactions and contract status. You'll see stuff like his option years left, etc, and one is "Rule 5 eligible"

Thanks! I've only ever paid attention to the number of times I can still send them down on that screen and never noticed the rest

My 40 man roster is based solely on who I think could help my team reach its full potential given the circumstance that I had to call upon someone. I can set my 40-Man in the offseason to protect guys from the Rule 5 draft.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

How do you usually manage the 40 man roster in your franchise?

I started my franchise using OSFM v.1, which was the 25-man roster. I'm doing 30 team control for the first time ever and I have my profile set to my team and the CPU profile set on auto for all the other teams.

I was eager to get my franchise started and I'm about 2 weeks into the schedule so far. Obviously, there have been no call ups/demotions so far bc there are no teams with 40 man rosters.

So before work this morning, I went in and manually added guys to the 40 man for each team according to rosterresource.com.
I got all AL teams done and I plan to finish the NL teams tonight or tmrw on my off day.

I'm hoping after this, that the CPU will start having some activity and moving guys up/down as needed.

Being as its my first year doing 30 team control, I'm not sure how much activity I will see but I hope the CPU will make logical moves and make my franchise world somewhat realistic.
