There is a huge difference between a great fielder and a bad one.

I'm not arguing against you. I actually kind of agree with you. I'm just pointing out that there is a way to have user input 100% determine play outcome while still having ratings matter, and the current throwing system is a good example of this.

On the flip side, I think that there is a lot more nuance to the fielding in the game than people realize, and often routes to the ball and timing can have an impact on errors.

Also sometimes players mess up routine plays. That is just a fact of life.
Oh... I know ratings matter for pretty much everything.. My thing was no way I want just user input deciding errors(Fielding). Which was what was (to me) being suggested.

I'm ashamed to say that I hit reset... :-(
One of my outfielders did that to me last night in the 8th inning of a no-hit game. It was a popup and I swear I could FEEL him moving away from the ball. He was fighting my controller. No-hitter didn't happen. Ugh!

          Ratings need to matter.
          Errors happen.

UNLESS there would be a way to have it set to all user input related when manual fielding is on...
even then I'd be totally against it as if ratings don't matter then there's goes a lot of coaching and management from the game.

As far as CPU fielding I have seen plenty of CPU errors. Just need to have good settings. My last game vs Boston they committed 2 in a row that led to a run.

          It goes both ways IMO.
I was meaning it should be like hitting or pitching, your players ratings should alter how hard/easy it is for you to successfully complete an action. If I have a guy with terrible power, I can still hit a homer if I do it just right, but it will be a lot easier with a better player. By the same way, catching a ball or fielding a ground ball should be easier or harder but still entirely up to you. Press a button to catch the ball, how big the timing window is depending on the players ratings, or something like that.

Let my incompetence be the reason I commit errors and punish me for my mistakes, don't just arbitrarily every now and again decide "computer says no". Make it more tactical and skill based to decide whether you are good enough to play with lesser fielders

            Re: One of those innings

I just lost a game in my DBacks franchise with a crazy finish. It was 1-1 in the bottom of the ninth in Miami, both clubs had one run on four hits. I unintentionally walked Giancarlo Stanton to open the bottom of the ninth. They substitute in Ichiro Suzuki to run for him. He reaches second on a wild pitch. I get a pop out and strike out. Ichiro then reaches third on a passed ball. I strike out Martin Prado, but the ball gets away from Castillo, allowing Prado to reach first and Ichiro to score the winning run!

Crazy! Just when I think I am headed to extra innings, a walk, passed ball and two wild pitches lead to the winning run with no hits in the inning.

              That's the thing, though.

If I get good enough, fielding ratings become pointless. Even hitting and pitching have random components to them so ratings always matter beyond how easy/hard it is to execute with the player.

To me, there's tactics already. For example, I pinch hit for Ichiro in RF with Joey Gallo. Gallo has no business in RF, but if I was good enough and my input was all that mattered, I could say "who cares" and make it work. As it is, I better sub Buxton in or risk some atrocious plays in Fenway's spacious RF.

To me, that's tactics - making specific moves in order to achieve a specific objective.

I have played this game for quite a few years now and I can definitely say, at the start of the fielding animation, I know when my guy is going to throw it in the dirt for an error or drop a line drive
