Double play balls

So I've seen this a few times now. I've lost at least three easy double plays to this. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, or possibly if it's something with the game.

A ball is hit up the middle to my second baseman, who moves to screen left, towards the bag to field it. He's in that area between a throw and a run to the bag himself play. I have always attempted to throw the ball to the shortstop, which I believe is almost always the correct play. The second baseman begins the motion, but seems to stop and hesitate and take the ball himself, ruining the double play, sometimes resulting in no outs at all.

My bad? Something with the game?

Stepping on the bag has always been one of the most difficult feats in this game for me. If it is your bad and not something with the game, then you are definitely not alone. Hopefully someone will come along and educate us.

If your fielder is close to the bag you can press the corresponding base icon which in this case is triangle and he will go directly to the bag and you can complete it yourself. If you try to execute it with the left stick, you will generally overrun the bag and sometimes miss it and end up with no outs.
