When is a sacrifice bunt not a sacrifice?

Playing as the Giants, Span leads off with a walk. Knowing my proclivity for grounding into double plays, I have Pence lay down a bunt. Not a good one, I pop it up and it lands between catcher and pitcher. Catcher fields it and throws out Pence at first, Denard advances to second. Pence is then credited with a ground out rather than a sacrifice. Is this correct?

Appropriate user name is appropriate. Anyways, Pence should have been credited with a SAC Bunt.

Did you square around as the pitcher started his motion, or after the pitch left his hand? If a batter tries to bunt for a hit and it ends up being a sac, very rarely, the official scorer will record it as a fc or a groundout. I think the computer chooses to rule any bunt attempt after the ball leaves the pitchers hand as an attempted bunt for a hit rather than a sac.

That may have been it. Usually I square up early, but I had some indecision with Pence. Hard not to let him swing away.
