Re: Rate stats realism issue (BB's)
I think this is the stat that I have the hardest time getting. I can get the CPU to give me some walks but I have a hard time throwing walks my self. If I lower the 2 like control type of sliders we have I can most likely get realistic walk numbers but then I end up hitting way to many batters and I also then will give up way to many meatballs.Comment

FWIW I'm experimenting with the following solution for meter pitching:I think this is the stat that I have the hardest time getting. I can get the CPU to give me some walks but I have a hard time throwing walks my self. If I lower the 2 like control type of sliders we have I can most likely get realistic walk numbers but then I end up hitting way to many batters and I also then will give up way to many meatballs.
Go to HOF
Set CPU timing to 1 (otherwise you won't get any swing and miss action)
Set your control and consistency to 1 or 2 (depending how good you are with the meter)
Turn back on the pitch trail indicator so you know if you are throwing a ball or strike
Keep strike zone turned off
Use broadcast view so it varies by stadium making it harder to settle in and nail the meter
House rules: always throw a ball at 0-2 counts. Try to start half of at bats with a ball. Roll two dice before each at bat. If you get 1-1 or 6-6 then walk the guy by throwing at least 5 pitches out of the zone. If CPU swings and grounds out or whatever or survives 5 away pitches without walking go ahead and try and get him out.
Getting realistic stats now...Comment

I'm confused when people are saying they don't get swings and misses on Hof yet need to lower hum control all the way because they hit the meter so well.
I've had to raise the human control because I don't hit the meter well, but I still get plenty of chases, and swing and misses.

If they need to lower control to get more misses, that also lowers how "deceptive" pitches are, leading to more contact.
If you raise control, you're increasing the "deceptiveness" of your pitches. That will tend to lead to less contact."Some people call it butterflies, but to him, it probably feels like pterodactyls in his stomach." --Plesac in MLB18Comment

KBLover,
To answer your question on swinging percentages, here is the game I just played:
149 pitches
Took 85 pitches
Swing and missed 13 times (almost all were curves / breakers below the zone that I didn't hold up on)
Struck out on 7 pitches (some inside cutters / sliders in here not just breakers)
The rest were foul balls, outs, and hits (had 9 hits and 6 walks at the plate)
So basically taking more than halfComment

This is interesting. I did not realise the game mechanics work in this way in terms of improving the inherent swing-and-miss deceptiveness along with control to put the ball where I want it.Comment

Interesting. I usually hover around the MLB average for swing % (47%) and generally below average for O-Swing% (MLB average is 32%, I'm usually around 25-28% when I'm playing right or unless the CPU is really on with command to make me chase).
I dickered a bit with my CPU pitching to try to get MLB average Zone% (pitches that physically cross the zone as strikes) which is 45%. That would point to your lowering Strike Frequency and Control to be very realistic moves. I did similar. Managed to draw 9 walks, just 6 hits, and lost 5-4 (I had an Adam Dunn team line, 9 BB, 11 K, 1 HR lol)
To that end, I'll also be watching my zone percentage to make sure I try to hover around that, too.
It seems odd, but if you think about how real pitchers pitch, it makes sense it works that way. Balls are not always missed locations. Sometimes (probably more than most think) pitchers intend for pitches to not be strikes, but LOOK like strikes or otherwise be "too close to take" (or close enough to get framed by the catcher/called strikes anyway by the ump). And of course, some are "setup pitches".
Control/Consistency (more the latter, imo) on on-purpose balls is more a distinction between a Maddux change that 2 inches off the black that ump might call and the hitter might chase and hit off the end of the bat and a 56 ft curve that bounces that only Vlad Guerrero would swing at (and crush, probably) or a ball a foot outside.
So high control lets you better deliver those "convincing balls". I think a lot of people just throw in the zone a lot and still want to walk hitters, so they make balls be mistakes (badly thrown pitches are less deceptive, in general. Pitcher ratings are always in play of course), and/or lower control, which lowers deceptiveness. Then when they do throw balls on purpose, the CPU may chase rarely, because it's fooled more rarely by low control, especially on higher difficulties.
Since the user can always potentially be visually deceived (CPU control is more "how often can the hitter get fooled and still adjust to put the bat on it" as well as for Directional players like me where fooled = godawful PCI location = swing and miss) or otherwise make "game control" errors (bad PCI on zone, for example) CPU control means less for this. That's why lowering it can help with less side effects and strike frequency has no say in "deception" at all."Some people call it butterflies, but to him, it probably feels like pterodactyls in his stomach." --Plesac in MLB18Comment
