This is from The Show 15. The grass would be 3d rendered before you selected the pitch and it looked really good. After you'd selected the pitch it would turn into the green flat mat it is all the time in 16 while pitching and batting.

Battlefield 1 has the best graphics I've seen in my life for a video game.

The rendering on dirt, grass, trees, etc. is spectacular.

The best grass is up to opinion. And no MLB 15 had absolutely nothing on anything as far as dirt and grass textures go lol. MLB so far doesn't do shading, lighting, or actual coloring of the fields in any way that seems realistic to me, nevermind the texturing is weak all around. When I go to a Twins game it's a night and day difference between anything in the game and in real life. Period. Not even close. Not even half way there. Not even a fourth of the way there.

Uncharted 4 and Witcher 3 ring a lot of bells for people. Uncharted 4 has some absolutely amazing things going on.

Far Cry Primal is up there when you talk about overall presentations for grass and foliage. Absolutely amazing on a top rig. BF1 is up there on a top rig as well.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter really does things considerably better than most games out there. And obviously the original foliage king Crysis 1 maxed out and modded. Skyrim modded could be considered. I'd give the remaster a few years to see what people can come up with.

Now if Motorstorm Pacific Rift were to be remastered and updated I might have to give Dirt to that game.

But for real: DiRT Rally. Nothing else comes close for dirt.

Indeed, they really need to move on from the green mat. It's so obnoxious at this point. And the shading for grass patterns is literally PS2/3 level stuff. Horrible.

Of course you can compare grasses across different games and genres. The mathematics / physics behind realistic grass is the same throughout. Some games focus more on "the ground" while others don't...hence the difference in details. This thread has extreme relevance in The Show forum since this game has probably the worst landscapes of any other game (regardless of genre).

My concern is, why is there grass in whatever version of NBA 2k you're playing?

I probably just mixed up the 'grass' in the NBA with MLBs version

I assume why the grass and dirt looks better in other genres is because of other concerns that are added into the final product, which is why somethings will always look better in some games versus other games. Even if they were made by the same developer. If EA made a garden simulation game, I'd expect it to look a lot better than anything they could do in Madden. I can see how its good to bounce ideas between the dev's, but I would expect that tech would still look better in one of the two games, even if they did look closely similar. I think it would be unlikely they would come out the same.

FIFA 17 and PES 2016 have pretty amazing looking grass.

We probably need to mention Fifa 17 for the grass. If we had that in The Show I might be content. Fifa 17 on my PC looked all around pretty decent for football/soccer game. I know Show has to do more with stadiums but still.... stuff needs to move on from the PS3 days.
