I am a huge fan of Retro Mode...it's the perfect complement to the deeper modes like RTTS and Franchise. You can play a 9 inning game in like 15-20 minutes.

Plus, it's awesome that the legends are on their team's rosters as well...Played with the Cubs against the Braves last night, and Ernie Banks, Ryne Sandberg, Bruce Sutter and Warren Spahn all saw action!

I love the 8-bit filter, too! Makes me feel like I'm playing RBI Baseball for NES again!

Re: Retro mode: A missed opportunity

I've only played a few innings of it so far but really like it. As a kid I used to love Ken Griffey Jr Presents mLB on Super Nintendo and retro mode is basically a next gen version of it. I was expecting the gameplay to be pretty much the same but wasn't expecting all of the other visual similarities between the two:

-On screen text including the count and score are almost the same (same color and style) as the original.

-the green backgrounds on the menus

-the homerun text that scrolls across the screen

-the look of the scoreboard when you pause the game

-the whistle of the ball when you hit a high fly ball or pop up.

-the background music even sounds similar to the oriinal.

I just wish they put the "radar" on the screen to help with fielding.
If I remember correctly the original game used to put an x in the outline of the field and your fielder was a dot. Helped you get in position when you can't see the bullseye until the ball gets deep enough in the outfield.

I played a game. Not for me. I dont like the pitching mechanics or fielding mechanics. I'm sure it'll be a fun couch co-op play style but I don't see myself playing it solo unless it's for trophies/missions

There's an 8-bit filter?? Oh I'll have to look for that tonight.

Yep...pause the game during a Retro Mode game, and it's in a "Settings" menu I think.

A simple 29 game ladder season would be nice.

              Play every team once.

Or 2 15 team leagues where you play 14 games and the top 2 from each league advance to the playoff semi's.

Or a reward the first time you beat each team in retro mode.

              Or all of this.

While I absolutely looove The Show, Retro Mode is a pass for me. Not because I don't enjoy retro baseball games, I actually own a decent collection of NES baseball cartridges and I still have my NES hooked up to a CRT TV. In fact, this is probably why I didn't enjoy Retro Mode: It doesn't do anything that the classics don't do better.

I can totally understand why fans who don't have the option to play the classics would appreciate Retro Mode purely for the nostalgia, but I'd much rather pop in RBI Baseball, SNK Baseball Stars, Bases Loaded, or the original NES Baseball carts and play those games, or emulate them on my Ouya if I want the HD treatment.

I played it once, and probably won't touch it again. Its funny for two minutes, but the nostalgic feelings quickly went away for me and I got bored. I think I'll stick to Tony LaRussa games or RBI Baseball 3 for my old game feel.

I agree. Played a game and thought it was cool but I don't really have much of a desire to play it again.

My favorite was Micro League Baseball (That ball has eyes).. I loved that game, much more detail than retro mode but it'd do. And the fact you can play 3 innings or 5 innings if you want.. Great start.
                      Favorites:

                      Detroit Red Wings
                      Detroit Tigers

My 8-year old son played a few games last night and loved it. I had to set him up with auto-throwing and fielding since it was still challenging for him to field and throw. He was having a hard time switching between the d-dap and analog stick.

                        His impressions:
He really liked the sound of the ball in the air and how he could move the pitcher and hitter. However, he hated pitching... "It's boring to pitch, dad!"

It took him a little while to nail the hitting timing.

He really enjoyed the 8-bit graphics option which was kinda weird.

Give me a 162 game Season+playoffs mode and I'll play this mode constantly when I have 10-15 minutes to spare. Don't need franchise, just one season is fine.

Or I guess I could just go play my actual SNES and my copy of 'Ken Griffey Jr Presents: Major League Baseball'. It would probably fire up quicker than my PS4 and this game.

I think the point of my original post was a bit lost. I agree with almost everyone who replied, I won't play it much in its current iteration.

Why? I'm 43, I don't have other adult men over to my house to play a game of ps4 baseball. Also, its a one-off game where no stats matter and there is no way to get realistic results...aka this is a retro-style game. However...

If they could transition the mode (minus sound effect; but including sliders, gen counts, commentary, stats, replay etc.) into Franchise, THEN I actually would very much enjoy the mode. Its not that I don't understand the term retro (yes, no frills, old school). I believe they could keep the mode as is, but also add it into Franchise and I'd love to play like this. I love seeing more of the field, the over the backstop hitting view.
