What is your Fantasy Draft strategy?

Since I see we have our annual Fantasy draft progress thread up and I have dabbled in them. I was very curious as we each have our own way we go about drafting our team.

Like myself, i will start with SP and skip RP and roll on through each position all they way through RF then start all over. Or I decide that there are too may good pitchers still available to let pass up so I will also once in a while draft all five SP then go on to all other positions.

So how do you approach it take when drafting?

For me when I select position players the three most important attributes for me in order are:

    1. Fielding
    2. Contact
    3. Speed

When I select pitchers the three most important attributes are:

    1. K/9 or H/9
    2. Velocity
    3. Control

First pick for me is always best available player under the age of 28 preferably 23-25 age range. He will be the corner piece of my franchise for the next decade. Typically I'll go with a position player first. I try to watch what the current trends are for picks and go against the grain. So if a lot of Pitchers are getting selected in the current round I'll go position player or vice versa.

I like to build up my infield first. From the inside out but the trends of the draft will dictate how I pick.

Usually my Catcher is one of my worst hitters but is a very good defender with a strong arm. I want my outfielders to have strong arms as well.

I don't usually end up with power guys but with my defense speed and pitching I usually end up with a top 5 team.

I will also say that it's a must that I get at least two ace type pitchers and a top 10 closer. With my SU man being the opposite handed and top 10 as well.

Pretty much how I go. It largely just depends on the trend of the draft for how I start out my draft in the first 5-7 rounds.

I've only done one, and its been a few years since I did, but I decided to go cheap budget and make a team that would be a bottom feeder, so I didnt pick any position player in the top 15 of positions and no pitcher in the top 50 of starters or relievers. It was a season of torture as I barely reached 70 wins. But I still enjoyed that team like no other. Which is one reason I havent done it again. That team will always be really special to me.

Re: What is your Fantasy Draft strategy?

Depends on where I draft at in the first round. If it's top 10, I'm going with trout, Harper, Donaldson or Bryant. If it's later in the round I usually go SP, SP with my first two picks.

With that being said, I attempt to draft my team to be as "realistic" as a fantasy draft can be. I will grab a few veterans on expiring deals / 2 yr max. On from there, I look for some younger "core" type players in the later rounds (SS, 2B, OF) are always full of good value.

For me, relief pitchers are not a must have and I usually wait until the 13th round or later to start going for them. (There is very good value at this point) Again, I like to grab a good vet or two if I can, and then just piece the bullpen together. If you're planning on playing all of your games, I don't see a difference in getting Andrew Miller with a top ten pick or Koda Glover with a late 30's pick. Again, just my preference.

And of course, as the draft moves on I attempt to focus on prospects at positions currently manned by veterans. I prefer doing the full 90 man and draft my team to have my roster laid out like this:

        SP: 18
        RP: 21
        CP: 4
        C: 8
        1B: 5
        2B: 6
        SS: 6
        3B: 5
        LF: 5
        CF: 7
        RF: 5

I try to build like this in regular franchise, with the exception of one less catcher and one more OF'er.
