I completely disagree. it seems like they didn't really give him a lot of lines, he mainly only speaks on the umpires, and prior to the game he says (the same things) about the starting pitchers and the defensive alignments.

I heard him say "he really crushed that ball" like 3 times in one game.

but hey, if you like it then so be it, i'm not trying to tell you what to like and what not to like - but compared to what madden and NBA2k are bringing, this is lagging behind.

Re: The commentary still needs work

The commentary hasn't changed at all, all they did was change the voice. Its still just as bad as ever, which is disappointing.

Like Blzer said, they need shorter lines. That is part of the problem.

The other problem is that too many lines are centered around irrelevant things, like a pitch that was just thrown, and not enough lines are centered around important things, like the score, win streaks, current standings, pitchers coming back from injury, etc...

Real announcers don't have 3 minute dialogues over every pitch and swing.

Re: The commentary still needs work

What we're sure of with the newest shuffle of commentators is that it's not who is saying the lines, it's the lines themselves.

It doesn't matter if it's Campbell, Karros, or Reynolds. They all have the same problems and there's one constant with all of it, the lines themselves.

Realistically you need semi fresh content for 162 games, one full baseball season. Asking for years of on point comments or enough content to fill up 1000 games is asking too much.

There needs to be a rotation of content and certain content that doesn't unlock until a certain point in a season (or during the year)

What we have now is is about three games worth of content. Once you play with or against a team three times it's over, just wash, rinse, repeat. There needs to be filler and lots of it.

I think the talent may be part of the problem.

Years ago when you had a well known announcer in a video game they were calling basic things, just saying what's happening on the screen...

"Hit to left, Ernie catches it, Jackson holds at second"

It was a very short time in the booth recording lines.

If you're going to have a team of people doing all of the filler you need to have someone available and maybe the top talent doesn't have that sort of time. Maybe it's time to have some lower profile names that could take the time needed to really flesh out the game.

This year it sounds like everyone mailed it in. I don't know if it's streamlined because of time constraints or because they tried to fit more play by play in but after the opening series everything is set to repeat.

People keep complimenting Madden's commentary make me wonder if they ever played it in cfm. Most repetitive thing ever. Show does much better in that aspect.

I am 100% in agreement that the long, drawn out stories and explanations add absolutely nothing. It's just white noise meant to fill dead air. Worse, it gets very, very repetitive.

Personally, I would rather have one single play-by-play guy describing the action before or as it happens ("Sale with the 2-1 pitch... fastball in for a strike." "Ground ball, past a diving Lindor and through into left field.") and adding some relevant information to that play-by-play. ("That brings up Pedroia, who homered in yesterday's game.")

I don't understand the complaints about dead air. Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but the inane, useless chatter during the game drives me nuts. There doesn't need to be commentary after every pitch or even every out. I used to mute the other announcers as, after a few months in my franchise, I can't stand their canned lines. Remember "MEAT!"? Ugh. Too bad that option was removed.

Yeah I thought in the mlb playoffs this past year, Joe Buck really showed the value of less is more with dead air time.

this is something that happens in all sports video games, even nba 2k. the best way i've learned to deal with it is memorize it by heart and then try to finish their sentences in a goofy voice. "GIT UH DUBBLE PLAY BAWL"

To tack onto this, commentary about past plays is so prevalent in real life. Freddie Freeman homered earlier? Oh, they'll talk about it when the Padres are up in the top of the 8th inning.

Must be extremely hard to program, but not everything has to be shown/discussed immediately after something happens, either.

Are you talking about Mike Krukow of the MVP series? Because he says that in real life (not as annoying when he does then).

If you meant Rex Hudler... everything about that man is annoying.

Was that from MVP? Jeez. I'm getting old. Maybe it just shows how many hours I logged with that series. I was actually referring to Rex Hudler, who was the absolute worst (not his fault, I know he was just reading lines).

for a catcher 50 qualifies him as speedy.no catcher has speed rating of more than 70.
so, thats an astute observation, chalk up a win for the commentary AFAIC
my gripe about swihart is why isnt his secondary position LF.

They should have Hank Azaria do the commentary next year.

They're trying to make it like a real broadcast. So much so that they are spending a good amount of money trying to make it sound like a real broadcast. Part of the money that goes into making the game is spent on making it sound like what you would hear on TV.

Baseball is boring, there's long pauses and everything takes forever to get done so announcers have filled the boring times with stories, stats, etc. I know that in video game form baseball is faster but there's still a lot of time for dead air.

It's obvious that SDS wants to have a TV like presentation because look at the MLB Network tie in this year.

I'm guessing you don't watch sports on TV or listen to them on the radio? (that's not a shot saying that you're less of a man because you don't follow sports it's just that announcers talking during games has been around forever, especially in baseball)
