    Doubles

It seems the "too many home run," topic is one of the more popular threads so far single the release of MLB 17. However, as I'm moving along in my franchise it seems that a lack of doubles may be my biggest issue.

Is anyone else seeing this trend or have I just not played enough games?

    Re: Doubles

I've only played about 15 full games and portions of several more, but I seem to see a fair share of doubles. I don't know what MLB averages are but I'm seeing about 2 per game

      Re: Doubles

Eh...this is two sides of the same coin IMO. Those who are seeing too many homers are probably not seeing enough doubles, because balls that should be doubles are going over the fence. A ball hit with enough velocity to be a 2B is sometimes going to be a HR with the right launch angle. This has never been more true now with the new ball physics.

I would suggest being careful with this one and looking at your total number of XBH before thinking about making too many changes here.

        Re: Doubles

My numbers are a tad skewed as I have Jarrod Dyson who turns a LOT of singles down the line into doubles, but I have seen a solid number of speedy guys legging out doubles that should be singles, and power guys taking advantage of huge outfields and legging out doubles (Im looking at YOU Houston). When it comes to homeruns and doubles in my opinion is hard to judge due to the wind, ballpark dimensions, player speed, etc. I'm curious if the power or the solid hits slider contributes more for doubles...

Until they get OF positioning to match what you'll see in real life, you won't necessarily get the amount you're looking for.

And I get it, they have it as a balancing act in their game right now because of how their physics work. That means a retooling of physics is needed.

A remedy for now is to lower fielder speed, and hope that you can balance out enough in the solid hits/baserunning/throwing department to make up for loss in fielder speed.

I have fielder speed at zero and they still get on top of balls like track stars. I personally feel defense is way too on point this year. Infielders are all gold glove candidates and make remarkable throws just to add to the issue. Outfielders lay out and make diving catches far too frequently, especially on plays where they just straight up shouldn't, whether it be because the fielder isn't good enough or that the risk/reward isn't worth it. When they actually flub a catch the ball often times goes way past them. Most guys would take the hop and make a throw...laying out isn't in every single outfielder's repertoire. I play with Toronto a lot and I put Steve Pearce in left as he plays a bit this year. He's not going to make all these diving catches, yet he makes one a game for me, with fielding speed at zero.

According to what Ramone said, they tweaked the OF position to get a proper amount of extra bases. It makes sense gameplay wise but the shorter distance between OF and IF means that the game need more power to hitters just to put the ball behind the OF to have the right number of doubles. They probably go too far with this cause at the moment you have two possible scenarios: too many HR's or too many doubles/triples. It doesn't help the insane amount of meatballs you get from pitchers ( on HOF, at least ). All in all, it's a balance problem. Just to provide some - i hope - useful data, here is my last game vs CPU. HOF pitching/hitting, zone hitting, default sliders. Take a look to the Royals, the team i was using: 1 HR, 4 2B and 3 3B. Than Oakland: 3 HR and 2 2B. Obvioulsy you get also games in-between and often these games gone completely wild in terms of offense.

It seems like I'm getting a good bit of my doubles from hits that slice down either foulball line, and while I do get some in the gaps between OF'ers, I dont know if its the right number or not.
But on the whole I'm satisfied with HR and double totals. I think thats because my skill level at hitting can only be described as average, at best. And thats being generous. I wonder if the majority of users that are seeing inflated power numbers are what I would classify as good hitters. sometimes I wish i was a better hitter but then there are times I'm glad to fall into the sweet spot.

I'm the same way. I don't see too often the settings that are being used with the home run figures. But someone who is good with the controller/eye-hand, etc. blasting home runs on AS...wonder if they have moved up to LEGEND???

Yeah I'm seeing this issue. Outfielders gobble up everything that isn't hit over them, so most of the time you're looking at a homerun or a single. Obviously there are some doubles, but it still feels like last year where the outfield jus doesn't seem as vast as it is in real life

                      Re: Doubles

I'm not seeing an issue with too few doubles. Hit variety is the best its ever been thanks to the new ball physics. I see singles, doubles, triples, and homeruns and none seem too excessive or too few.

I had an instance where Peralta ripped a shot down the left field line but it was hit so hard that it bounced off the wall holding him to a single. Later on, Sierra flips a ball over the 3rd baseman's head that curves and lands in between LF and 3B and rolls to the wall, allowing him to get a double.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I am currently playing on legend. I was on all star last year (zone hitting).

HOF was a slugfest this year. Legend is a bit better. But still far too many homeruns. I still enjoy the game but I do miss the challenge of hitting a big fly like years past.

did you play with default sliders or adjust any of the sliders like power, solid hits, contact?

I've been playing default. On legend. Using quick counts has helped because it doesn't allow me to sit waiting for a meatball.

I was trying slider sets as well on HOF but not with much success.

I think the other issue is hitting input method. Using directional, no matter how well you time pitches that are right down the middle, if it's not your turn to get a hit - you're not getting a hit. The same pitch while using zone and I get a hit way more often than not. Against the cpu that is. Against human opponents might be a different story. That's not to say I haven't had games where I hit the laces off balls a lot, because I have, but using directional really neuters the seemingly overpowered hitting/power/homerun issues a lot of people are experiencing. While at the same time feels pretty underwhelming when you hit a fastball that's literally down the pipe (which does happen a bit much) straight over the mound three batters in a row.

I'm not suggesting everyone switch. I think that either via a patch, or next year, hitting and pitching methods should be brought more inline with one another. One shouldn't be far better or more productive. It'll bring continuity to the game so issues like this and sliders, etc could be narrowed down a bit easier.
