Retiring early
Is there anyway to stop this?? I'm 2 years into a franchise and players are retiring at 33 and 34 years old. What?!?!Tags: None -
Re: Retiring early
It is actually realistic. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/today/tranx/retired.asp
There are the outliers but many players retire much younger than you think.

Anyone who is a solid MLB regular or role player doesn't retire that young unless it's due to injury. They usually can hang on until they're 36-38 or so. Even Chone Figgins lasted until he was 38 in baseball and he hasn't been relevant since he was 32.
So I'd ask TC to check to see WHO is retiring at 33/34. If it's a bunch of guys who are still contributing on the field like Yadi or Alex Gordon then that's an issue. If it's guys like Jered Weaver or Craig Gentry then it's not a problem."Baseball is the coolest sport because, at any moment, the catcher can stop the game and go tell the pitcher a secret" - Rob FeeComment

Re: Retiring early
It's "sort of" realistic. The only players that retire at 33 or 34 (or younger) are fringe MLB players and guys who wash out of the minors. Click on that 'MLB Only' button on that link and you'll see that most players who were actually decent MLB players are 36+ when they retire. Guys like Yadi Molina definitely shouldn't retire at 35.

Re: Retiring early
You can try to extend by editing contracts before starting your franchise.
I simmed multiple franchises with the Braves and Dickey and Colon retired every time. Then I changed their contracts to 2 years each and neither retired after 2017.
It is a problem tho. 34-35 year olds who have been every day MLBers since their 20s are retiring. If you want to find out who, just start a franchise and sim a few seasons. End of 2018 season list was incredibly unrealistic.

Re: Retiring early
It sounds like regression and retirements are exactly the same as last year. Bearable, and sometimes okay, but kind of annoying at times. I have not tried this, but I think it would work: right before the retirements are announced, lower a player's age. Let's say you are a few seasons into franchise mode and a few future hall of famers are closing in on 3,000 hits, they are still playing well and you want them to stick around for a few more seasons, which is pretty realistic actually. Just lower their ages to 18 right after the season ends, then put them back to normal later. I bet it would work. I am going to try this in mlb 16 next time I play just for fun. I don't have this years game.Comment

Re: Retiring early
Is it possible to delete players? If it is then I have a solution. The engine forces retirements because there are a limited number of players that are allowed to exist in the league. So for every new player drafted and signed, an existing player has to retire. If you can go around deleting players from the league to make room, you'd probably have more realistic retirements.Comment

Re: Retiring early
I "delete" players by scrolling through the minors looking for players over 30 who aren't performing well, and thus will probably never make it to the majors. I then edit all their attributes to 0 so that they have an overall of 1 and F potential. Then I release them and they almost always retire at the end of the year. This usually works pretty well. (I use 30-Team Control by the way)Comment

Re: Retiring early
The players who retire are decided at the draft. I usually go through the league and release players before the draft who I want to retire. after the draft I'll make a new file and sim to the end of the season to make sure nothing extremely crazy happens. If a lot of guys retired that shouldn't, I will go back before the draft and release more players or just sim through the draft again and it will be the new list of players retiring. If you release players before the draft it has to be 2-3 days before the draft so they clear waivers before the draftLast edited by tapout8302; 07-19-2017, 02:38 PM.Comment
