Hot streaks, cold streaks - how do they work?

Couldn't find a current thread on it, so here it is.

    The question is two-part:
    1. When a player enters a hot/cold streak (presumably from poor hitting), how long does that streak last without additional input? In other words, if you immediately bench a cold streak player, is there hard and fast logic behind how long the cold streak lasts (like a cooldown timer)? Or is it random and varied from player to player?

    2. What's the best way to beat a cold streak (or keep a hot streak)? Right now, I've got D.J. Lemahieu slumping his face off so I decided to put him lower in the batting order. Hasn't helped, he still can't make solid contact on anything (despite having 90+ contact L and R).
