    Free agent status

I know it takes six years of MLB service to become a free agent but I've noticed some players, like Zach Britton have 5.094 (near the end of July) yet on their contract status it says they're going to be free agents after 2017. Are they restricted free agents? Not sure how this works exactly. I use 30-team control and always try to make some deadline trades that I think would be realistic.

A year of service time is 172 days. So based on their voodoo math, I believe he'll be an unrestricted FA.

Britton is arbitration eligible after 2017. He's unrestricted after next season.

On the game, in real life, or both?

Both. I've noticed this as well. I think it is just an oversight. It happens to guys who will be just short of 6 years service at the end of the year. It says he will be a free agent but he will still be controlled for one more year by the O's as he will come up short of six years total. Last years game I noticed it with Strop and Arrieta. This year I think I saw it with Rondon and Harper I believe. But they will still be under control for their teams in the 17 offseason if arbitration or a contract is signed. Just sim to the offseason and you can see they are still under team control.

I've noticed this too(with Manny Machado and Josh Donaldson, etc)
This is a little frustrating when you see them as being FAs on the Free Agents area on the menu in Franchise. I try to plan ahead on who I may target and then who knows who is actually going to be a FA.
Then again they could resign with the team anyway.
Luckily, I also play with 30 team control so I can manage those players appropriately.
