Re: Why can't I steal bases since the patch?

I share the frustration of some of you guys stealing. I find getting a good jump almost impossible and it has driven me to the point of not even bothering trying to steal. Even guys with great speed and steal ratings I get horrible jumps and thrown out 80% of the time.

I hold L2 and release when I want the runner to break but it seems the runner breaks at any random time, usually pretty darn late. It seems the computer knows when a pitcher is super slow to the plate and does not let you break to the bag when he starts his delivery. The runner is held at the bag long enough for a close play to result. I have always had this issue no matter what patch.

Am I wrong to assume the runner is supposed to break for the bag when you release L2? How can one manually control when the runner breaks?

It's not instant, there is a slight delay between releasing L2 and when they take off so you really have to time it on first movement. I typically take a pitch to see the delivery, notice what moves first when they start their windup and then when I want to steal the moment I see that I release L2 and am typically safe more often then not. Don't get me wrong I've been thrown out trying to steal but it's been much better then before when I was just tapping L2 as I was thrown out far more often then as opposed to now.

Know the catcher, the pitcher, the runner. Check player quirks, steal on proper counts and hopefully the pitch is conducive to a good pitch to steal on.

I hold down L2 now and at a RHP pitcher first movement let it go. With LHP.....it is murder to steal sometimes. Depends on their pitch selection and the type of pitcher they are, how big of a leg kick they have in the stretch, their quirks...it all maters.

Stealing IMO is no doubt harder on 17 but far more rewarding. On previous games...it was a cake walk.
        Armor and Sword,

The way you describe it makes base stealing sound challenging and like a dream that I would love to play in. But unfortunately I do not experience what you are describing at all! But wish I did!
Granted I know you play the game a different way with full team control and I use player lock.

I currently lead the league in stolen bases with a created player who has a 46 overall in stealing and 81 speed. I have been caught once out of 18 attempts and I do not run back to the bag to try and cheat the CPU. I also play on Legend with default sliders. But the only factor I see that you describe above is the leg kick. Once it's into motion and not a slide step. I pretty much seal the deal of the stolen base. Which can get repetitive over a 162 game season but I am just trying to break a record.

I would love for the rest of the elements you describe above to factor in. But unfortunately full team control is not my desired experience. I did notice however that I need to hold the left stick to avoid been picked off as the CPU pitcher's pickoff throw reaction time is much faster this year. So there is no chance to dive back with a natural reflex without holding the right stick and been tagged out. But I would take this any day over the slow mo that was in MLB 16. Ideally I wish ratings were a factor in CPU pick off moves especially when playing from a player lock perspective. It would definitely make it more challenging!

I can't steal anymore unless the speed is 90 plus. Imma try the holding L2 method

              2-1 IMO

You can take a strike and they sure as heck don't want to go 3-1 so they won't pitch out

Whatever count that current pitcher has a tendency to throw something offspeed. I've stolen so many bases on 2-2 counts because that tends to be breaking ball count.

When the pitcher is ahead of the count... that way you can anticipate a "pitchers pitch" or an offspeed pitch out of the strike zone
