Re: Catchers' Pitch Call / API

    Digging up an old thread...

I just had a game as the Giants with Posey as the catcher and Stratton pitching. Encarnacion was at the plate for the Mariners and I was up on him 0-2. Posey wants an outside slider..hung it up..fouled off. No biggie. Same call from Posey. Again, hung it up, fouled off. Same call from Posey, again hung it up, fouled off. One more time, same call from Posey, smashed to deep left field.

4 innings later, Haniger on first, Top 7th ties 2-2. 0-2 to Encarnacion. Posey calls for a high fastball down the
Middle of plate. Crushed to deep center.

Sometimes the calls really really don’t make sense. If my pitcher has hung up 3 sliders in a row (I understand that a slider outside the plate away will probably get the guy swinging) I’m not calling a 4th because he can’t locate the pitch.

It should be based off of inside edge last 3 years of data but it's not. Doesn't tie into anything. When doing rosters previously if u put players ratings all to 0 there hitting chart stayed exactly the same.

I would say it's just random and probably so they can majority the first pitch half the time not really using the batters real life tendencies.

I was often frustrated in ‘18 by Grandall calling for Kershaw to throw countless FB’s in succession especially with the count in his favour when he has such dominating breaking stuff.

Exactly. I’m not real sure what they base the call on. It’s definitely not previous pitches or situational. As many have had...unorthodox.. calls in key situations. It’s likely just a set order they have based on pitches you throw

          For example:

If the player throws 3 fastballs in succession, the code would be for 2-3 breaking balls in succession.

          Something along those lines.

Do you have pitch confidence on? I think pitch confidence being high on a particular pitch makes the catcher call it more. I know pitch confidence makes the CPU spam pitches. Turning it off seems to give more of a natural mix.

I’ve used API off and on for most of my time playing The Show, and it generally works pretty well for me. Often I have a pitch picked out in my head before the API gives the sign, and it’s the same pitch/location.

I usually have more success when I follow the catcher’s calls. I’ll almost never follow it blindly, but using what they ask for 75% of the time or so generally works pretty well for me.
