Re: MLB The Show 17 Development & All-Star Update Twitch Livestream Has Begun
Nice stream. I think if they had done this or something like a month or so after launch it might have gone a long way to easing some ruffled feathers. But knowing how the real world works, probably not.

Re: MLB The Show 17 Dev Team Discuss Server Issues, Hitting & More
This was indeed a good stream, especially for those who have been frustrated by the hitting engine and the feedback it gives (e.g., the "just late" timing issue that online guys have typically complained about).
I have not been that frustrated by the hitting system myself and what Chris talks about is basically inline with my own understanding of the hitting engine, but I do still think there are some quirks that should be ironed out, maybe not for this year because it's too late but for the next year... if the franchise continues (what?).
I think what's really confusing with this year's newly introduced ball physics is that the transition between forward and backward spins of batted balls are rather abrupt and lack granularity, and when I see videos of online guys complaining about being "just late" and hitting with authority to the opposite field, it's often line drives with backspin.
I think that's the hit type which I continue to feel is very "off" in general, and need to be looked into closer. I personally think if that particular hit type isn't given as much backspin (and therefore extended hang time), then I think a lot of complains about those "just late" timed hits would substantially get toned down among the online community.

MLB The Show 17 Dev Team Discuss Server Issues, Hitting & More
This stream confirms why so many of us are frustrated with hitting. When you time a pitch perfectly or good you should hit the ball harder more often. I do also agree that you can hit the ball hard when you swing just late. However, in The Show, most of the successful results come from just late swings instead of perfect/good swings. This isn't consistent compared to what happens irl because it's out of balance.
It seems impossible to pull anything hard down the line, in the gap, or for a homerun this year. Notice the odd trajectory on pulled balls, almost like they get pushed to the ground very quickly by gravity and the ball also spins towards the fielder because every pulled ball takes on this wonky hooking rotation. I've also seen this on line drives up the middle where the ball was hit by a lefty towards the SS and curved back towards the second basemen like it was a ping pong ball. It was jarring to look at and is something we don't experience irl. It is common to pull a ball without it hooking and that's not represented in The Show this year.
Exit velocity in The Show is also inaccurate. I probably speak for many of us when seeing so many pitches squared up only to see the exit velocity at 70-80mph. This doesn't make sense, especially when the avg. MLB exit velocity is 90mph. I don't think we want to see hits all over the place every game, but realistic home runs, gappers, and realistic hit variety would be welcomed.
And pitches up in the zone don't get punished like they should due to the lack of power/exit velocity. Therefore, there are no consequences to missing up in the zone.
Major leaguers frequently hit balls hard and fielders make plays irl. But the fielding in The Show opens up another can of worms unfortunately. It seems this year's game is broken beyond repair unfortunately...at least online. I appreciate the sincere efforts of SDS and hopefully they can right the ship next season. For now, I had to trade the game in because 3mo in it's unplayable and not enjoyable. I hope they can turn it around.

still love the show. I'm just curious did something happen to hitting after the last patch or I just suck and need sliders because before I was able to produce runs. now I can't and only can combine for 4 hits in two games. is this just a slump I'm in or theres an issue.

I have not watched the stream, but I think MLB 17 is the greatest sports game ever made. I only pitch to the CPU and never hit and things are fine, imo.

Something is off since the last patch, as has been the case since the initial release with the abundance of power. I've played about 13 games in franchise since the last patch, and have only scored more than 2 runs once. Got one hit a few times, and have seen averages across the board fall.
My biggest gripe right now is just the way the ball is coming off the bat. The post above mentioned the exit velocity right now is just off, and I couldn't agree more. If you're playing HOF or above with default sliders, it's virtually impossible to hit for any average or pop, unless you have a guy with moderate to above power. The ball just doesn't look right in flight. I've been hitting so many balls to the shallow outfield, that the INFIELDERS are the ones making the majority of plays.
I honestly felt hitting was the best it's been this year out of box save for the home run power. Really thought it would be a simple fix, but so much has been done that it's completely wrecked hitting IMO. So close to shelving the game, bc I'm at a point in my franchise where I don't want to mess with sliders or lower the difficulty, but my stats will be so out of whack bc I've essentially played different versions of the game throughout my franchise.

It's cool they take time to address these issues but the more I see of the developers, the more obvious it is that franchise is not a priority.
More and more games are focusing on "pick up the controller and play someone online." The user vs cpu is becoming a thing of the past...slowly...but surely. Less and less time and effort is spent tweaking offline issues in gameplay, season, franchise, etc...as the focus remains build a steadier platform for online...that's where the $$ is.
I've seen it in the Show, NHL, 2K to a lesser extent...and Madden 18 appears to be showing the same symptoms from what I have read. Making the game play as online users expect...and want...is where the teams are throwing their money now. It's hard to serve 2 masters, and the offline crowd is going to continue to take it on the chin. In 5-10 years when these server and connection issues are a thing of the past (hopefully) it may not be such a big thing to everyone.
It's disheartening for sure as each development community leans more and more on the incoming data to tell them which way to steer the titles year to year. "my data tells me that only 1% play in this fashion" is the death knell for us offline guys for sure...

disappointed that the hitting portion of the stream is really just "this is how hitting works."
I think the hitting in this game is mostly fine. There are some issues, like balls floating far too much, and the foul-fair dynamics really needing some adjustment... but mostly, I think the hitting is good, and the best it has ever been.

I think its 'iconic' that server issues will define this series this generation.
