Won't let me sign a free agent (in-season) w/o releasing player

I've read and understand most of the rules regarding roster moves and spent a fair amount of time researching these forums but to no avail.

I have 24 men on my MLB active roster but it won't let me sign a free agent without releasing a player. Is there some rule about total # of players in your organization that would prevent me from adding a street free agent in-season for my Franchise? I just traded 2 players (1 MLB, 1AAA) and received 2 AAA prospects. My MLB team has 24 active players; my AAA team has 25; 90 total across all four teams. Thx.

Also don't forget when adding a player to the major league roster, he must be on the 40 man roster. So you will need to make room for the free agent, either by designating someone for assignment (removing from 40 man roster) or if you have someone on 10 day DL with a significant injury, you can transfer them to the 60 day DL which will free up a spot on the 40 man roster.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(
