Is there any rhyme or reason why potential increases?

I have players doing great who's potential doesn't rise but others do?

Does young age have something to do with it? I have a 21 yr old and 19 yr old both going up and down, respectively with their potential.
Could this be a way the game balances out teams with a good farm system?

Any insight will help, thanks guys.

I have not noticed any pattern. I have had guys get hot and play well whose potential has gone up big time, others who got hot and played well whose potential went down. I have seen combos of potential up overall down, potential down over all up, both up, both down etc. I think it's totality random.

From what I've seen I think it's partially based on performance, but I have no real evidence to support that. Even if it is true, there is at least some level of randomness to it as well.

I always thought it was tied to performance while actual progression was random. I feel I've read that before on past releases, but maybe I'm remembering incorrectly.

when it comes to player potential
it downright crucial and flatout essential
you scope some B's, sign some A's
doing your homework for the days
and make sure your scouts all have credentials

Game/seasonal performance and player training has a big influence in players developing.

The question, though, was about potential specifically. I know certain players like Sano, Edwin Diaz, and Osuna will shoot up to A's fairly regularly if they perform well for a couple of months. But other than that, I haven't seen a discernible pattern.

I also haven't seen player training have much of an impact at all. Can you explain how you think it has a "big influence"?
