How many players at each position?

I'm currently in my 1st franchise trying to figure things out.

How many players do I need at each position at each level? For pitchers and position players. I'm really confused on who I should send the minors (do I keep young, 70+ players on the bench as platoon guys or do I send them to AAA?) and which players I should have in AAA/AA.

this is the way I prefer it but is doesnt always shake out like so

    catchers 7
    2 each MLB AAA AA - 1 A

    22 starting pitchers - 6 each MLB AAA AA - 4 A

    22 relievers - 6 each MLB AAA AA - 4 A

    18 outfielders 5 each MLB AAA AA - 3 A

the infield is where I have to be most flexible, MLB AAA & AA will have 17 infielders altogether
    Single A will have 1 each 1B 2B SS 3B

    21 infielders
    corner infielders - 10
    middle infielders - 11
I try not to have 3 of one position on the same level

sometimes I wind up with 43 pitchers instead of 44
sometimes I wind up with 19 outfielders instead of 18
sometimes I wind up with 22 infielders instead of 21
I always try to make sure I have exactly 7 catchers

To add to caulfield's response, keep in mind that while relief pitchers can't always start, starting pitchers can always pitch relief, so don't be afraid to overload your system with starting pitchers. That being said, the numbers Caulfield posted are pretty solid.

Caufield's breakdown is pretty solid in terms of numbers of players at each position and closely mirrors the approach that I take personally.

In terms of who to send down and who to keep at each level, that is really difficult to say with any certainty, at least for me as I don't have a steadfast rule on who goes where based on any set of criteria.

My goal each spring training is to have the 25 best players, at their respective positions, be part of the MLB roster. Then I fill the minor leagues with who I think will help each of those levels win. The one steadfast rule that I do have is that typically anyone I draft in the game will begin the following season in A ball.

It might be easier to offer assistance if you provide the player's your trying to decide upon and the team you are using.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(
