Throwing out runners at home
Is there any advice or tips for accurately throwing to home from the outfield without having to hit the cutoff man? It seems that most throws to home from the outfield are way off the mark and rarely on point unless I hit the cutoff man first, but by that time, the runner has crossed the plate..I understand that not every throw is going to be directly to home plate, but it seems that a majority are not..Sometimes you really gotta throw that ball!Tags: None -
Re: Throwing out runners at home
i play auto base-running.. auto fielding and throwing..
my team never throws out or picks off anyone, yet the CPU gets there fair share.. i never use to play auto but i switched in the hopes of balancing my stats with CPU... that never happened lol.. it sucks though because even my CPU controlled players often throw offline but my opponent is always on the bag... i strictly play offline franchiseToronto Maple Leafs

Re: Throwing out runners at home
I use full control of my fielders..The problem is, if you hold down x for a strong throw, the outfielder usually misses the mark, no matter their rating..Seldom do you get a throw that is spot on (or around home plate)...If you hold anything less, you are lobbing it in..Throwing to the cutoff just slows that process down even more..Not handy if you are trying to gun someone down..Comment

Re: Throwing out runners at home
If you're trying to throw out runners at home with an outfielder that doesn't have good arm strength and arm accuracy it ain't gonna happen, you may as well throw it to cut off. Look over your outfielders stats and next time to have to throw it in you'll know what to do.

Re: Throwing out runners at home
I play with Pure Analog Fielding/Throwing, and one of the things that I love about that particular mode is that if I load up, and make a full-power throw, I'll need to have it at exactly 6 o'clock on the Wedge of Influence, or the throw is offline.
This includes getting set up correctly for a tag-up fly ball, or trying to cut down a greedy runner.
I would much rather have a throw that was successful 10% of the time, than 90% It makes those outs feel more earned than scripted.

Re: Throwing out runners at home
It's all about the stats. If your guy has bad arm accuracy (which is an increasingly important stat in these games - which I love), you won't be able to put much juice behind it to have a decent chance of a good throw.
Despite the fact that in this game, slightly offline throws are handled not as great as real life, they still have the same effect. A slightly offline throw will not result in an out on a bang bang play, which is how it should be.
You have to know your guys stats, know the situation, and know the baserunner's speed. If, when you're throwing the ball, you think you've got a great chance to get him, cut it or possibly throw it softly. If it's going to be bang bang and you've got a great arm, send it on through (it'll still probably not work). If it's going to be close and the outfielder has a bad arm, I would still cut it and hope for the best."The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws."

Re: Throwing out runners at home
OP:
I take it you're using button throwing (press the button and the length of the press determines throw strength). That throwing mode is the most ratings-dependent of any of the modes - the only thing you can control is the velocity of the throw. You might be able to affect the accuracy indirectly by how hard you throw it, but you don't have direct control over that. It's similar to directional hitting in this regard - ratings are just much more impactful.
The other modes - analog and button accuracy - give you a greater degree of user control over the accuracy. You might want to consider familiarizing yourself with one of them if you're having too many throws go offline.
If you do insist on using regular button throwing, you might want to consider lowering the throwing error slider. Just be aware this lowers accuracy for the CPU as well, and you'll be seeing less of their throws going offline too. Other than that, as others have said be aware of your fielders' throwing ratings, because if they're bad it's going to cause more offline throws no matter which mode you're using.Last edited by bcruise; 08-05-2017, 12:35 PM.Comment

Re: Throwing out runners at home
I've noticed in this year's game, a lot of the time my catcher can't handle it even if it is an accurate throw. Don't know if that's Bruce Maxwell isn't as good defensively as Yadier Molina or if it's something new.Comment

Re: Throwing out runners at home
This is the same issue I have. I can get an accurate throw to the place a decent amount of the time, but usually the catcher (anyone I use) either doesn't field the ball cleanly, or takes FOREVER to apply the tag. If I throw anyone out at home, it's usually because they made a bad decision, and are out by 3 to 4 steps.Comment
